We arrived at noon on Christmas Day, the hut was packed, the dining room looked nice. We were immediately turned away in a rather unfriendly manner, and the mention of a booking at least resulted in us being given a key with the number "seven" by the "fairy godmother", who was constantly being given the finger by her colleague. The question of whether we could reserve a table for that evening was met with a weary smile, and whether it was possible somewhere else or whether they could prepare something for us - mind you, the restaurant was very busy - was met with a reference to breakfast in the room. This consisted of two slices of toast, jam and a small packet of cornflakes. The room itself was a very nice tin hut with a direct connection to the neighbouring one. We walked around the special area, showered and drove on. Expensive shower for 300 AUD.

We were informed a few days before arriving that the restaurant will be closed on the day we were there and was told of other places we could eat which was nice to be informed.
When arriving the whole Hotel was closed so checking was difficult, finally checked in after paying twice as they didn't have a record of our payment.
Our room was very nice and new but very cold as only had a small fan heater.
Our room also had no water, after 1.5hrs of waiting with no commutation from management, when it would be fixed we left. It look like we were the only people there.
Probably wouldn't recommend it in winter. Very disappointing

I appreciate the difficulty staffing remote locations, its not easy, but theres some things that just aren't ever that great. Pizza was made of a large round focaccia bread with salami and cheese on top $24 - totally not what you'd expect and not good. If you advertise pizza, at least use a pizza base.
Our friends meals all took ages with the last one to come out after everyone else had finished at 1.5 hours after it was ordered. The staff were great, polite and doing their best in a bad situation.
It's a shame, but I wouldn't go there for the food. Unless you just want chips - they were great.,

Didn’t know what to expect given the very remote location and the fact we were only staying overnight as a transit stop between Strahan and Hobart… but we were very, very impressed. The accommodation was well appointed and super comfortable…the king sized bed was cloud like. Regarding the bar and restaurant… the beer was ice cold, the food delicious, and best of all was the attentive and authentic hospitality shown by the staff, particularly the young lady who helped us check in to our room and then went on to be an amazing restaurant host. Was so impressed that I’d be inclined to make this a destination in future visits… not just a convenient stop over. 5 stars. Highly recommended.

The hotel has new "donga" style rooms that are contemporarily styled and clean. Unfortunately, they placed two water tanks and a shed in front of the window in our room that completely blocked out the view of the lake.

The rooms aren't air conditioned, but they have electric blankets and an effective Dyson style fan/ heater. The window was difficult to open and close and didn't have a fly screen, which is a must here

"My recent visit to the Great Lakes Hotel in Tasmania was truly delightful. Fran, with her charming pigtails and her little pink shirt, provided impeccable service. She recommended a fantastic Tassie Chardonnay that perfectly complemented the cozy ambiance around the fireplace. Although it wasn't snowing during my visit, the warmth and hospitality at this establishment made it feel like a winter wonderland. I highly recommend the Great Lakes Hotel for its excellent service, welcoming atmosphere, and great wine selection."

This motel has undergone a really nice renovation. It’s an older style place but they have taken the very ordinary rooms and made them as nice as could possibly be done. The bed was very comfortable and the bed linen luxurious. Self-make breakfast was provided and there was a lovely little table to sit at whilst having it. The decor is really nice with cool prints and special touches including unique tin mugs and camping plates and really upmarket teas /coffee and generosity of breakfast sachets, fresh bread. The bathroom is small but has also had a remarkably good makeover. I stayed here before this renovation and found it acceptable then, so this was a lovely surprise. Couple points off for weird staff but I guess this is a quirky part of the country and we were just travelling around and not expending 5 star service. Very happy with this stop and good value for money.

Living an hours drive away I had been keen to visit the Great Lake Hotel for some time. Had some friends staying from interstate, so saw it as a good opportunity to visit. We travelled up about 3 weeks ago during school holidays, we were all impressed with the menu, quality of food & service.

Our experience had been so positive I returned again Sunday 2nd May with three other friends. Once again the menu and quality of food was excellent, however there was a real problem with the service. Shortly after seating we ordered drinks and some garlic bread for starters. Thirty minutes went by and nothing. What was concerning was there was ample staff behind the bar area but no one seemed to be doing anything except wondering around. I eventually I approached the waiter and we received our drinks etc shortly after.

Our meals arrived and were beautiful, I had the macadamia crusted gem fish on a bed of Paris mash and was just delicious! Everyone in our group loved their meals.

Sadly no one came near us for the rest of our visit to enquire if we required more drinks/wine or deserts. Someone did stop by while we were eating and enquired if we were enjoying our meals and of course we were.

Seated at the table next to us was a mother & child, she commented that the child's meal arrived a half hour before hers, so when hers arrived the child was ready to go. She also commented she was not happy with her meal and covered it with a napkin and left.

The food was just excellent, however the service was a bit of a shambles. I realize businesses have off days for a multitude of reasons and I would certainly return and try again.

Another great long weekend at the Great Lake Hotel,
Mate and I up there chasing the trout (unfortunately the weather wasn’t so kind!)
Always love staying here…the owner Jason and his team treat us like friends, not clients.
What a great set up they have here, with a well stocked store (read cafe, variety store, fishing tackle and take away food and of course fuel)
Always start the day with a cappuccino!
So back to the hotel.
We stayed in a two bed en-suite room which was neat, well appointed and perfect for a couple of mates.
Meals each night were great, an extensive menu to satisfy all tastes…..of course pre dinner beers at the bar beside the roaring log fire on winters days.
Special shout out to Fiona and Paige who looked after us each night.
Wait….there’s more …. They run professional trout guides…with expertise second to none, Jason, Martin and Fiona available by booking ahead to tackle some of the thousands of waterways and lakes holding the elusive trout (they mainly alluded me this weekend)
All in all, great place and looking forward to returning shortly.
Cheers

Called in for lunch and the obliging and helpful staff allowed us to have a pre-coffee in the annex nearest the lake for its great views and relaxing lounge chairs. This was despite that room being totally booked out and in the process of being set up for a large group coming in. Great customer service and appreciated by us. We then moved to the dining room for lunch where we had a pizza and pork belly entree. The pizza was adequate and the pork belly was enough for my wife to eat as a main. In all, a very satisfactory experience with great views that we rated just below excellent due to slow service. Our impression was that there might be some understaffing in the kitchen. We suggest that if you are in a hurry, make that very clear as otherwise you will experience a very leisurely and relaxed lunch.
