I went to this show with my son and his girlfriend, we had a great day watching the dog's and horse's and the wood chopping, had some ride's and ate some yummy food, but I Was very disappointed that the steam engine display was missing, as it has for the past 3 years

My partner and I had driven through fog, sleet, torrential rain and strong winds from St Helens. We stopped at a tourism site at Derby (that was as cold and dreary as the day) for a cuppa in the morning and were very much in need of somewhere better for lunch. We were not entirely sure about our first impression of the Lilydale Tavern but stopped to check it out. And are so pleased we did. We were met with a bright welcome on entry and, when we explained we were looking to have lunch, were placed at a table in front of a magnificent fireplace, logs burning away, warming us nicely. The Tavern is in the process of renovation and alteration but although there was a draught created by this (that we were able to avoid), it was a great spot on such a miserable day! We spoke with the lass who served us (sorry, I forget her name) and with the young owner (Mark) who explained about adding a shopfront for their Leaning Church (previously Lalla Vineyard) wines. There was good rapport with everyone, including the chef. My partner (vegan) and I (vegetarian) had no problem with selecting appropriate food as the chef said, "Tell me what you'd like and I'll prepare it for you." So we had warmth, personable acceptance, excellent food of our own choice and a single glass of a delightful chardy (driving, see?), all in pleasant surroundings that will be even better when all of the improvements are finished. We concluded our trip in to Launceston with a view to revisit the Tavern. Time and circumstances prevented that on this trip but it will be a definite at some time in the future. Our congratulations to everyone concerned.

After reading the previous review, we decided to book into the Lilydale Tavern when rooms in Launceston were booked out. As we were flying into Launceston at 8pm, I advised the hotel on the phone that we would not be arriving until 9pm. I was abruptly told that they would be closed by then, but he would leave the keys under the door mat of our room. I was happy with this arrangement and he said he would write in the book for this to happen. I confirmed that the cost would be $79, as per their website. Their response spoken quite rudely was: "Thats wrong, it needs to be updated, its $89." When we arrived at Lilydale, we looked all around to find our keys....they were not there. Luckily the Tavern was still open, so we went into the Tavern to ask about the keys. There was no welcome, no apology, nothing. The owners response was "You're lucky we're still open, we are normally closed by now" While we were able to get our keys that night, we were lucky. If he had closed (the tavern was busy), we would have had no option for accommodation that night. There was no after hours number, and nothing else in Lilydale at all. Although the rooms are okay for the price, the hospitality and service (our beds weren't made for our second night) was unacceptable. I would not recommend.

At first I was a bit sceptical as the price for a double room seemed very low. However I was pleasantly surprised. We needed to overnight in Launceston - looking around we found that the cheapest for a double room in a backpackers was $65 (no tv, shared bathroom) - then we found the Lilydale Tavern at $49 - it takes around 20 minutes to get there from Launceston (lots of kangaroos on the road late at night so take it easy) - well worth the spin tho - as you get a double ensuite room with tv for $49 - the rooms are clean and warm and we ended up going back there for a second night. If u have your own transport get out of Launceston as this proves to be much better value. I think they can afford to be cheaper as they are in the country side. Try the toasted sandwiches at the bakery too - huge and only $3.50. Sorry starting to sound like an ad - I have no links to this place just thought I would alert fellow travellers to a bargain - (no mention of lilydale in the lonely planet either)
