Turnstone Beach House is an outstanding house ,specifically designed by coastal architect Paul Witzig for this site , to provide hideaways on the wonderful west coast of King Island. Turnstone combines privacy with stunning views and all that just 15 minutes from the Airport and 20 minutes to Currie . The house offers sweeping views of the mesmerising Southern Ocean sunsets and storms ; and of the surf rolling into the bay at Little Porky Beach. Large double glazed windows all round naturally frame the surrounding coastal landscape up and down the coast. It is a memorable experience to view the rolling surf, a sunset, or even have a comfortable and cosy front row seat to watch the " sound and light" of one of the big electrical storms that occasionally rolls in .

We were 3 couples staying at Turnstone - what a beautiful property in the most amazing location. You can spend hours just enjoying the changing views from different directions. The house is so well equipped with everything you need around the kitchen & to enjoy the 12 seater dining table. Loved the nice touch of the local cheeses and food basics. Communication's with Tara and David was first class.

Jannette we are very happy you and your friends enjoyed King Island and Turnstone Beach House and it is nice of you to take the time to post a Review. I agree- that King Island cheese is wonderful. We love Turnstone and appreciate being able to see , even from the living room, both the wonderful sunsets over the Southern Ocean AND on occasions spectacular storms . And isn't it nice, in these strange times, to be able to take an " overseas trip? Best wishes David

Five of us - sisters, a niece and an aunt - stayed at Turnstone Beach House for 8 days. It wasn’t expensive because there were five of us sharing the cost. The house is large enough for each of us to not be in each other’s face all the time. The lounge and kitchen area was a wonderfully large room. The scenery out the many windows was beautiful. On our first night we arrived about 6 pm, cooked tea and didn’t bother lighting the fire. It got really cold by eight o’clock. There are electric heaters but they are on timers so we didn’t get warm enough that night and two of us felt that we froze overnight. However I got in touch with the owner, David (stuck in Melbourne) and Tara who was looking after the place. The response was almost instantaneous, we were advised about using the wood heater, two electric blankets were provided, and an offer was made for someone to get the fire going for us if we had problems. From then on, all was warm. The wood heater warms up the whole house so that the electric heaters are then barely used. We had a great week in this wonderful place. Games, Books, cds, DVD’s, were there, so that we barely had the TV on, but spent the evenings (if we weren’t eating out) playing Yahtzee and Scategories with a great deal of noise and laughter. Porky Beach and Little Porky Beach are great places to walk along. There were food items in the kitchen cupboards, the kitchen was well equipped, there was plenty of linen, bathroom supplies (though we ran out of toilet paper fairly quickly) and extra blankets. The shower was excellent. The oven was a confusing mystery, our university degrees were no help, however there were instruction manuals provided if you could understand them... we were not fussed. It was a fabulous place to stay with great service, great amenities, we loved it and would happily stay there again.

We are delighted you enjoyed Turnstone after a shaky start and you were terrific guests. We appreciate your kind comments. Once you get that lovely big fire going the place really does warm up and become very cosy ; and we agree that looking out from the double glazed comfort into the bay is then a joy . I sympathise with you on the issue of reading the manuals ! We all know that dealing with a new Oven can be a "learning process" King Island in winter can be wonderful and you obviously made the most of it. Please come again best wishes David

Our family stayed at Wave Retreat and totally loved it. The location is superb, the house is charming and the welcome was warm and friendly. Our welcome cheeseboard was greatly appreciated and the cupboard full of every day items to use was most thoughtful. The room layout was ideal for our family of 4. Queen beds for teenagers is always appreciated. The King Bed upstairs was a great little luxury for us and it was gorgeous sitting up in bed in the morning, having a cup of coffee and watching the birds hovering. The house is extremely well set up for anyone who wishes to self cater, there are plenty of cooking pots and implements and the cooktop works well. The information folder was also appreciated, as were the instruction manuals for the electrical appliances. We would highly recommend Wave Retreat to all and hope to be back for another stay ourselves.

Let me start by saying that Wave Retreat is in a fantastic location, was faultlessly clean and Ayra was great to deal with. We were able to check in a little early and had privacy for our 3 night stay. The treats were awesome too. However reading the other reviews, I feel I need to put this venue in perspective with what I'e experienced elsewhere, for the price. And I've run my own seaside accom in the past so I have both points of view. This place is anything but cosy. The lighting throughout is cool white LED (warm white is the usual for interiors), and extremely bright, giving a feeling of being in a medical suite. I'd be astonished if this was designed by an architect. The layout of the living area is just awful, and too small. The only place 6 people can be together is around the dining table (which is an outdoor setting, but indoors, and cramped against the window). The couch fits only 3 people and the back is too low to be comfortable for more than a few minutes. It's only really suitable for kids and has no coffee table or side table, and faces sideways to the TV because there's no room for it elsewhere. The balcony is large, but wasted space as there is no table, just some deck chairs which can be taken outside if you want to sit there, but with no tables, it's not practical to sit there for long. If only half the balcony space had been traded for indoor living space. The bedrooms have no functional bedside tables, just low cubes on the floor. No clocks, no lamps, and nothing on the walls. In fact there is no art in the house at all - the only ornamental concession was 2 rocks and a seashell on a shelf by the TV. The reading lights above the beds also bright white LED and positioned too high to reach easily. The wardrobe in my room was used as a broom closet. The pillows were so hard that after the first night, I bought a new one in town. The internet is speed limited, according to the guest info. If you're looking to do some work while you're there, be warned, it's so slow that even web browsing is tedious. In this age, internet is a utility like water and electricity, and even in a remote location like this, there are ways of getting useful speeds at a reasonable cost. This is priced as luxury accom, but it's not really more than just functional, has been built to a price, and lacks vital amenity. And entirely undecorated. At this price level I would expect some effort made to create a cosy feel, and a design that allows relaxed, social living for 6 people; internet capable of Netflix, and quality appliances. As accom on King Is goes, this is at the upper end of the scale, but with a bit of thought it could have been so much better. Still scope for the owners to improve this dramatically with not much expenditure, if they're motivated.

We are very sorry that your stay did not live up to your and our expectations. We would love to discuss your views with you in more detail, however we are unable to determine when you stayed as we have not had a group of 6 stay for 3 nights in recent history....? As with all views expressed by our guests, positive and negative, we will take them into consideration and continue to strive to provide the best experience that this compact and minimalist but beautifully positioned house can offer.

We have just returned from four delightful nights on King Island staying at Turnstone House. Turnstone House is a large, architecturally designed house sited above Porkys Beach. Whichever way you look there are views showing King Island, the sea and the sky in all their magnificence. Although it is a rental property Turnstone House is a well equipped home making a stay here, at any time of the year, extremely comfortable.
