I stayed at Hawley House at the beginning of summer, amongst the Covid pandemic. As soon as you enter the property, up the plant-lined driveway, you feel as if you have been transported to another world. The (five!) friendly dogs greet you as you head to the main house - a weathered, white, character house, which is reminiscent of another century. The staff are friendly & inviting, and nothing is too much trouble. The food for breakfast & dinner is as local as you can get, from the veggie garden & the suppliers in the immediate area. A warning though: the portion are large for dinner, but it's worth splitting a dessert (the sticky date especially!) with whomever you are with. A special shout out to Sophie, the owner, who seems to be able to do anything around the estate including cooking, gardening, restoring, and still having time to care for the menagerie of animals and making you feel like one of the family. I mention this, because it is definitely a family home - and you are just lucky enough to be welcomed into the family for the night or so that you are staying. There's no sterility to be found here, unlike chain hotels. This accommodation is cultured & eclectic, with hidden delights found in the original artworks in every room, and gorgeous nooks in the expansive gardens. Being built in the 1800's means the buildings are not perfect, but that just adds to the charm. Anyone who has ever owned a heritage house knows the upkeep that's involved. I feel like I discovered a hidden gem when I stayed here and need to share it with the world. I will be returning, as soon as humanly possible.

I never thought it possible to experience such an unprofessional response to a complaint from a restaurant or a Hotel. We had our meal order taken at 7.00 and around 7.30 our entree came, Ok ..... but then an hour later at 8.30 the main came. There were only 5 tables of people all night and 4 of them just two people / couples. Its ridiculous to wait an hour for a main, but worse, when the waitress put the meal down there was not even an apology for the wait. Then the rabbit pie ordered by my partner did not have the pastry golden and flaky, but barely cooked. At $60 for two courses every dish should be great you would think. I enjoyed my choices. However it got worse. When I went to pay for our room the following morning I asked if the ridiculous wait of the night before was normal or did they have more guests than expected? The staff member replied that no, it was normal. Then when paying / handing over my card, there was no sorry it was all much longer than expected or no ‘thank you’ fir payment - no manners whatsoever. Just a blank look. I guess I was being punished for being unhappy about the dinner wait or daring to complain. And still it gets worse. Next morning I reported the extended dinner wait to the Manager and advised the staff with no manners taking my money in the morning. Low and behold she defended the staff member asking if I expected her to be all cheery when I was reporting how terrible the wait for food was. But worse I think is that she constantly talked over the top of me, interrupted my sentences even after me having to ask at one point ‘can I talk now’. When I expressed how everything was now even worse due to her attitude and why instead as a business person she hadn’t chosen instead to offer a discount, take off one of the wines or something other then actually defending the complaint and arguing with a customer, she replied ‘what after you use blackmail’. I kid you not. And, ‘does that usually work?’ This bit takes the cake. What she called blackmail is me saying that I would think you guys would prefer me coming to you directly then just putting up a bad review (any normal owner prefers that) Too unprofessional for words. Melissa, This is not unexpected from you, although of course disappointing. We had a dining room of happy customers as usual on the night that you dined with us, and your behaviour was the only unusual and memorable occurence of the evening. We had many compliments and everyone including yourselves ate all of your meals completely. It is not unusual to have a space of time between eating your entree and being served your main course, in fact that is the expectation the vast majority of our customers, enjoying a leisurely romantic candlelit dinner in our dining room, rather than being rushed in and out within the hour. I choose not to delve into the details of this incident publicly, suffice to say in the circumstances we followed the Tripadvisor guidelines : "If a customer demands a discount or they’ll write a bad review, this amounts to blackmail. TripAdvisor recommends not meeting the demands of the person threatening you. “Report the threat immediately to us with any additional information you may have about the reviewer.” In short, there was nothing wrong with with our service, and nothing to apologise for. A glance at your other reviews shows that this interaction is far from out of character for you. It is certainly unfortunate that you seem unable to relax and enjoy your outings in a more postive frame of mind. I hope you find your Nivarna soon, Regards, Sophie

Set as the old stables, the room was unique and quaint, and the breakfast the next morning was just fantastic - fresh bread and local/homemade jams/toppings and a delicious plate of eggs. The dogs that live on-site were super chilled and lovely to have around.

Beautiful location and gardens. Had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. So close to the beautiful Hawley beach and the view from the upstairs stable rooms was divine! Lovely continental breakfast included in the rate which was a nice bonus. Dog friendly and so lovely to just wander around the gardens.

Hawley House first attracted me because it is pet friendly - I was delighted by that stay and Hawley is now my number 1 choice to stay. It is a fantastic place to stay - for me I love the friendly helpful staff - Nothing is too much trouble. I love the old world ambience of Hawley House the step back in time in both the gardens and rooms. Meals are the best both breakfast and dinner are second to none and being so convenient not to need to leave Hawley for these meals adds to the relaxing experience. The gardens are enjoyable to wander and explore, the Hawley beach is just across the road, there is a shopping center 5 mins away. Hawley House is so conveniently located to many holiday activities of the NW Coast - Including Latrobe only 10 mins away as is Anvers Chocolate Factory, Sheffield is a nice 1/2 hour drive through the local farms and country side.
