Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Good Aussie style pub wait big billards room and two bar areas.
Plenty of stuff on the walls and heaps of taxidermy animal heads.
Not a bad selection of beers and pretty cruisey staff!
Pokies and accom can't speak for the accom but had a good time drinking in the bar.

I booked five beds at the Alexander months previous to the holiday season as to secure a place. After a long day on the Spirit we entered the hostel and much to our chagrin it turned out that our beds were taken and our booking was overwritten, despite us having called a couple weeks ago to update the booking and check it was still intact. In the end, we were offered two beds and the floor in their sister hotel.. Not staying here again, sorry.

The Alexander hotel seemed to me like the only budget option in devonport and for the price you can't ask for more. Them ladies are gorgeous and the hotel has a perfect location. Downstairs is a old cozy pub which belongs to the hotel and the prices are really fair. Can't ask for more

Arrived to Devonport in the evening and this was the first accommodation I drove past and went to ask for dorm beds. Stayed in a 2 bed dorm with a bunk. A little sink in the room was nice. Right next to the port and freight trains with one of the main roads passing the hotel. So if you are a light sleeper maybe not your place to stay. There seemed to be a bit of partying going on in the kitchen and on the balcony so again, not a place for a light sleeper. Bed was okay t sleep in, generally clean room. Some of the showers leak. Didn't even look into the kitchen so can't say if I would have cooked there.

We stopped in on a whim prior to traveling back to Melbourne. The food was fantastic, the bar staff really friendly and chatty and the decor kept our interest with all the little knick knacks around the walls.

I came to stay here for a night, and I have to say I haven't had a worse experience at any backpacker's. When I came to check in the man was extremely rude and gave the impression that he didn't want me here at all - he told me other places that might have accommodation available (as if there weren't any availability here, which there were) and he asked me a lot of questions including whether I'd caused trouble at any other places in town! He then got my photo ID and spent an inordinate amount of time with it at the computer doing goodness knows what. Finally, he told me gruffly that if I wanted a room I needed to give my credit card details - it was in case I smoked in the rooms he said (despite me not being a smoker) and he said it was a "standard practice". Not standard practice for any other backpackers in Tassie I've been, nor for any of the other patrons staying there that I asked about it! If this wasn't the only place available at the time (one place being closed for the Winter, the other for renovations), I would have walked out then and there.

When that trial was over with, I finally got my room - for $35. The hotel itself was standard fare and rooms were reasonably clean, though drab and depressing. The exception to this being the kitchen, which was run-down and not very clean, with the fridge smelling and there being no labelling system for the food. The metal beds were of very bad construction, loose and wobbly, which squeaked every time one moved.

All in all I'd avoid this place for alternatives, unless you enjoy being treated like dirt by the hotel staff.

HI - thank you for taking the time to review and we apologise that your experience was not a good one. We will ensure your comments re the room and shared facilities are looked into as soon as possible. Unfortunately, due to repeat experience, we have been forced to put in place stringent check in policies and procedures. All too often we have guests arrive under pseudonyms, damage rooms and leave, or seeking accommodation where they have been evicted from other properties. Requiring credit card details for new guests is standard. Ensuring correct ID is standard. We in no way wish to treat customers poorly or have them feel like they are on trial but we need our staff to ensure all information is collected to avert any possible issues. We are not excusing rude behaviour and it is certainly not the norm for our staff. Nor is this a normal comment we receive about our staff. Your check in was a walk in at the busiest time of the week for our bar, which may have also extended your check in procedure, but please be assured any of the questions and details you were required to complete were standard procedure. We are sorry you felt them inappropriate and delivered badly.

We stopped in just for some snacks while we had some time left waiting for the boat.
The board outside does state that the bistro opens at 5.30, however I would have thought that with the menus littered around the bar there would have been bar food available. We went to the other side of the public bar where the girl didn't come around. Silly not to have food earlier for travelers. 5.30 makes the trip a little tight. Could be a great pub, but it's not.
