Detailed Reviews
Loved our stay at the Stannum House, Tenterfield. We stayed at the hotel for a week. Our room had a large four-poster and a single bed which easily accommodated three adults. The room was spacious and clean. Even though there was a large common area next to the room which had tea making facilities the room had water, tea, coffee, and biscuits. The room and the bathroom was cleaned twice a day.
The staff were friendly and accommodating. They went above and beyond to help to make our stay memorable. The staff knew the local history and the history of the Stannum house and took the time to find places for us to visit. This included contacting a number of local wineries to ensure that it would not be a wasted journey.

A must place to stay. Interesting history of the old mansion house. Original features , quirky decor. Very clean , comfortable beds and lounge areas with plenty of filtered water and complimentary tea and coffee .
Complimentary breakfast and reasonably priced dinner served buffet style. No old food in buffet which was replenished with hot fresh food as necessary. Food well cooked, no heavy fried dishes - not traditional pub grub. Some dishes with an Asian twist.
Mine host, with an engaging smile, was helpful with local information and nothing was too much trouble. All in all a delightful stay Strongly recommended

A mate and I chose Stannum house for the price, $99 which was slightly cheaper than other hotels in the area and I was attracted to the historic aspect of the building for an overnighter on our motorcycle road trip. It also offered ‘secure’ parking and twin beds, and thankfully upon request an ensuite!
We arrived & were greeted at the front door by a friendly staff member who issued us our keylock codes then took us to the ‘Kirk Jen’ room on the first floor next to the communal area.
I would say the room provided what it said on the box , i.e. a place to sleep and an ensuite. There was a random mish mash of furniture around the 4 poster and single beds, trying to give the room a historic feel but it honestly looked like it had come from an op shop! The room was also in need of some TLC with wallpaper hanging off the ceiling & gaping cracks in the tiles around the sink! However we found the beds to be comfy and made use of the heated blankets and felt the room provided to our basic needs.
The nearby communal area had a microwave, toaster, kettle & communal fridge and access to complimentary tea, coffee and milk.
The room price also included a help yourself continental breakfast consisting of cereals, toast and coffee. The dining room had some historic aspects to it, along with random stuff like old teddy bears on a sofa next to the tables!
Upon exploring the hotel it appeared to have a good history, and also some rooms while inaccessible appeared set in the original style, as were the hallways. The front balcony seemed a nice spot for evening drinks and a climb up the steep steps to the tower balcony offered a nice rooftop view of the area.
The hotel was quiet and close to town with a Coles down the road and the Telegraph Hotel/Pub where we enjoyed dinner.
Overall I thought Stannum House was an adequate and interesting but quirky hotel in need of some TLC. I personally would stay here again on a trip with a mate if it offered the best price, but am sure my wife wouldn’t appreciate the quirkiness and what she would call ‘old tat’!! 7.5/10

We had different expectations than what we found in reality. Don’t believe the online photos of their website. We stayed in the Julius Caesar room. It’s a large room with an ensuite. None of the furniture matched. The bedside lamps were different and had no resemblance of each other (see photos). The bed was uncomfortable - an old mattress on a wooden board. Basic house keeping, like washing table cloths and dusting window sills had not been done as these were dusty and dirty. Bedside tables were extremely unstable and upon inspection my husband (who has a trade as a furniture maker) was astonished to find the tables were just rough bits of thin craft wood nailed together with thin nails (see pictures). This pretty much sums up the standard of the room. It was winter. Don’t count on using the fireplace and don’t expect to have gas heating. You are given two bar heaters with rough worn cords and extension cords (see pictures) and we needed to run these all night as the electric blankets did not work on the bed. My husband asked the owner to check the electric blankets but he did not follow up with this. Basically, if you’re looking for a cozy, clean, comfortable romantic getaway, don’t come here. You’ll be disappointed.

Rooms are comfortable with old style Victorian furniture with TV and wifi ,has a communal kitchen with fridge upstairs for tea and coffee making. Excellent service from staff. great place to stay o/night if your'e traveling. Walked around Tenterfield and looked at all the old shops. No Maccas or other fast food places, saw one pizza place and had lunch and dinner at the Bowling club. Really enjoyed our 3 night stay.
Will stay again next time we travel to Queensland. Glen Innes is great too spent a night in the camp ground there.

Well what can we say other than a rude obnoxious owner.
We were spending our 8th anniversary here with a 12 week old trained assistance dog.
She sleeps in a crate and toilets on command outside.
But.... the owner told us in no uncertain terms any dog is not allowed
A shame for the disabled who have guide dogs or assistance dogs who want a nice experience in a hotel or house.
The owner hung up on us twice and abused us.
We have no option than reporting the owner to the Qld Government and Assistance Dogs Australia.
We will drop in to meet the owner on the 26th November to speak with him personally.
Whilst staying at another dog friendly hotel .

This is an amazing place of great historical significance- a must see! But it’s sad to see the upstairs rooms in disrepair with ripped curtains, windows propped up by bits of timber , ensuites in poor condition and taste, old dilapidated furniture and cheap additional furniture cluttering up the space. The downstairs dining area is crowded out with dated Knick knacks and too many tables - and the atmosphere is lost in the poorly managed attempts at renovation. It has such promise and potential beauty. On a positive note the upstairs lookout and the front rooms ( not used for accomodation) are stunning.

For the first overnight stop on our road trip from Brisbane, Stannum House was a welcome break. We were greeted at the front door by the manager who checked us in and then kindly showed us to our room. The staff were friendly and very helpful.
Breakfast was a continental buffet style arrangement in the dining room downstairs, with a range of cereals, toast, juice and coffee/tea. Our room (the Julius Caesar Room) was very comfortable and spacious, and had its own en-suite. Tea, coffee and refrigerator facilities are available in the common on the first floor landing.
Victorian Italianate in design, Stannum House exudes history from another era, and has the feel of staying in a stately home. Built circa 1888 by John Holmes Reid, a farmer originally from Scotland, who became wealthy through tin mining, the house is named Stannum after the latin word for Tin. The house is located just a short walk from Tenterfield town centre. There is a magnificent view across Tenterfield and surrounds from the roof terrace.
We stayed only one night, but if we had the time would have loved to stay longer. We look forward to our next opportunity to stay at Stannum House.

I was disappointed in what could have been a great stay in a traditional house-alas spoilt by cheap renovation. This was akin to fitting a Rolls Royce with KMart seat covers etc. The staff were friendly and helpful, however a Sri Lankan manikin in an Australian period home was very much out of place. Clearly the owner has more dollars than sense and taste.

What a stunning house and place to stay.
Friendly service from the guy checking us in.
Remarkable amount of work done to return the house to it's former glory. Well done to the owners who have done that.
We had a large comfortable room with a seperate bathroom.
Bed was great. Breakfast was simple continental.
The house has a communal sitting room, with team and coffee making facilities, along with a fridge for your goodies.
The front rooms are made up in the style of the house and offer a great glimpse of a beautifully appointed home.
Fabulous viw from the tower, and the large verandah was a great place for a glass of wine as the sun went down.
Position is A1 - it's just a very short walk to the centre of Tenterfield (3 blocks).
Absolutely loved our stay. Remarkable value.
