Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

According to the locals the Old Sofala Gaol, Cafe Museum closed up over a year ago and it's unknown when it will reopen? A real pity as the for sale sign says heaps! Inside looked great, a cosy little fine dining area plus a cafe section and curios everywhere. Hopefully it can get back on its feet as the Town needs something!!

Fantastic stay in a historic goal - hosts, Di and Harvey were very hospitable. We were fortunate enough to have the run of the whole place . Everything was very presentable and very clean. Highly recommend to stay with this welcoming old town.

Great old place full of history and many things to look at. Di was very welcoming and friendly and we will definitely come visit again sometime. Outback bikers Australia recommend staying at the old Sofala Gaol.

The Sofala Gaol accommodation was closed when visiting but it is worth walking to it to view the history of Sofala. The town is like a museum and it seems Covid-19 has rendered the accommodation nonviable at present but it looks like an incredible place to stay

This is a great little historic town with an incredible gold history near Bathurst NSW. The gaol was a great find and staying there overnight and breaky in the morning was a wonderful and inexpensive experience. Not far from Hill End, well worth doing. Good 4wd country too. The people who ruin it are wonderful.

We spent 2 nights at this little gem, with it's 100 metre walk to the friendliest 156 year old pub. Di spent some time with us answering our questions about the gaol which she and her husband have expanded continuing with the flavour of its origins... it's not 5 star but the memorabilia collection is fascinating as are the old magazines and books available. The beds were comfy and the shower was a powerful, hot, wonderful experience! Lots of interesting history around the town and surrounds, with great 4wd tracks and picturesque scenery. We will be back! Thanks

A wonderfully relaxed and interesting place to stay. Very pretty countryside and it's steeped in history. The Goal has a museum attached to the sleeping quarters. Great to have a look around. It has charming rooms with a shared bathroom, lounge and kitchenette. We were a large group of cyclists touring the area with an overnight stop in Sofala. Dianne and her husband were so helpful in organising a comfortable stay for us in the old goal house and the cottage. Dianne also gave us great info about where to have dinner (the excellent Café Sofala) and breakfast the next morning (also excellent Painted Horse Café ) And what an amazing and friendly town Sofala is....we will definitely be back!

Where and when you least expect to....you can find a gem like this. Lovely lunches, dining and very reasonably priced. Sofala is a surprise pit stop between the major towns. When you do drop into this cafe.

Went for a drive with mates up to Sofala the other weekend. Hadn't booked a place to eat and stumbled across the Old Sofala Gaol. A very welcoming establishment, an interestingly gaol themed menu and for a very decent price. The restaurant is part museum / store and also is B&B. Well worth checking out for a meal.

Sofala is one of Australia's last surviving gold mining towns. The Old pub in town has no pokies, and no TAB, so talking to the locals is the by far the best way to learn of the town's heritage. The accommodation is greater, shared bathroom facilities, and lots of memorabilia to view. We stay there every year, and if your lucky, a local may draw you a map, to show you where their favourite gold panning location is.
