Lake Lyell is a beautiful destination within two hours drive from Sydney. It provides visitors with access to the lake via a concrete boat ramp for waterskiing, fishing, kayaking and general boating. The park has both powered and unpowered sites, hot showers, free barbecues, and a childrens' playground. It is a magnificent bush setting, and only 10 minutes from Lithgow.

Office staff and ground staff were very welcoming. Powered sites are large enough but no water. Water is available from behind the amenities block. Toilet and showers were filthy but the park was full and probably hard to maintain with the number of campers. User pays for the showers at $1 for 3 min. Great views and an enjoyable stay.
If you remember you are camping and don't expect pristine shower or toilet facilities this lake is a great family friendly campground.

Scenery is 10/10. We parked our van in a powered site with a view over the lake. Spent our days fishing and canoeing. There was also a park for the kids to play in. No water apart from using a Jerry at the amenities block then hiking back up the hill, so byo or you can fill up the van at Portland playground which also has a dump point. Amenities blocks are on the older side but clean. Showers are $1 for 3 min ( you can get coins from reception).

We had visited this camp area when we met up with friends a few moths ago, it seemed nice. We wanted to base here and take a few day trips. Check in was easy, found the camp area. All good until the weekend campers arrived. Thinking we would have a few quiet days. The other campers like to party. There were lots of dogs which barked all day and night, people driving around and around using high beam. Not much supervision in the camp. The showers were basic, the first morning the shower was freezing, this is after I put in a dollar. The road could do with some maintenance, the road to the toilets had a huge water hazard. There is only one shower/toilet block, two toilets and two showers. I would not come back on a weekend, hopefully the week days are more pleasant.

Spectacular setting, and clean water for activities.
We drove down to the lake from Lithgow (about 19 mins) and dodged the $7 charge for entering the barriered commercial bit, where all the camping is. Instead we drove a further couple of kilometres and stopped in a pull-in, walked down to the way and swam from a little jetty.

arriving in was great and was given a map with all places located in the park, and code for boomgate, however coming back in the 2nd day, the boomgate wouldn't work, and there is no after hours line, so i had to drive over the gutter and rocks ( lucky had a 4wd), and the showers werent very warm ( had to pay for these as well), they also weren't very clean, the lake was partially green and not good for swimming, boats started up at 5:30 each morning, and sites weren't very big to have tents.
there is no water here for drinking so had to bring own water.
Would not recommend and won't be back again

This was the weirdest, most upsetting camping experience ever. My partner and I booked and paid to camp in the unreserved camping area, only to find that both unreserved areas were absolutely packed. Everyone is camping on top of each other, no one is considerate of anyone around them, it’s every man for themselves. We found a spot away from the crowd, but still, was absolutely trashed from the people that were there before us. We had dogs with us so I had to pick up the rubbish which took me an hour and a half. I filled 3 bags of trash. I told the people in the office and was offered 0 compensation. These sites are poorly managed, as other people have mentioned. We went out to get wood, only to get back and find that a whole group of people moved in on our already small area with 8+ people and they didn’t even register like the rest of us! The site guy came around and they got away with it. I’ll never be camping here ever again. Biggest waste of 40 bucks, you’re better off camping on the side of the road. The view isn’t worth it.

Response from Lake Lyell, General Manager at Lake Lyell
Responded 6 Oct 2023
Hi Shannon, Very sorry to hear again of your experience. I do remember talking to you and explaining the probable cause of the site rubbish and we would hope people could also tidy up after themselves as between campers checking in and out in the unreserved areas we do rounds to pick up rubbish left behind. In regards to the people whom you said did not pay, as it turns out they paid me by card on the machine I had in the utility. Once again we are sorry to hear of your experience but you also forgot to mention we gave you a full refund for your camp when you had complained about this matter to us. Kind regards Lake Lyell

we are a retired couple who have just spent 3 nights at this wonderful place. We camped right by the lakeside. In the evenings kangaroos came to visit us to drink water which was nice. Also had a small dog which was no problem. Highly recommend it and hope to stay again.

We stayed at the Lake Lyell Campground for 2 nights in Sept 2013. The campsites themselves were tidy and laid out nicely around the lake. We were right next to a row of 4 caravans/tents (they were all travelling in a big group) with little/no separation or markers between the sites. There was a bit of a "misunderstanding" with one of our neighbours who believed we were on their site, so after much discussion and pointing out faint markers and looking at the park map, they finally conceded. So sites could be better marked out.

It was an uneventful enough stay, though the only real criticism is of the bathrooms. To access them from our site (and many others), we had to walk up a rocky and steep path that was not lit. It would've been nice if they had just put in a proper path with steps, my 60+yrs in-laws were quite hesitant to head to the bathrooms especially in the evening. The bathrooms were small (2 showers cubicles, 2 toilets, that's it) and you had to put coins in the shower for hot water. The system wasn't great, as you'd be using the shower and then without warning the hot water would cut out and you'd be standing in the freezing cold water while scrambling to get another coin in the box. I've never stayed in a caravan park before where you actually had to pay for hot water (on top of the campground fee).

Having said that, the bathrooms were kept fairly clean, as was the rest of the park.

There is a reasonably sized playground for the kids - not particularly new or impressive, but enough to keep the kids entertained for half an hour.

A pleasant enough stay if you need to be in the area, and you need basic camping facilities.

over priced $29 for a powered site with no water and at amenities you need to pay for hot shower.
In camp kitchen no sink or hot water to wash up yet they expect you to keep bbq clean? No washing dishes facilities for campers anywhere .
booking a site!!,What a joke when arrived other people were on.
The camping is let down by poor management ,facilities and overpricing
Great location but better places cheaper

Not good for caravans. And overpriced for what you get. $29 for a powered site with no water. Only one tap to serve the entire camp ground and its 500m away from the powered sites. No slab, just dirt. And the 8 powered sites all run off one pole so everyone with their kids and dogs and noise is right on top of you.
We have stayed at other waterways such as Wyangala where you get a slab, power and water as well as a gray water point all for $29. Sorry but if they want to charge $29 then they need to make some serious improvements.
Lake Lylle is a pretty spot and there are some excellent camp sites right on the edge of the lake but no power or water and only a few sites where you could get a caravan onto.

Sorry you feel this way, however there is water 30 meters from the powered sites and there are three power poles servicing the powered sites. Caravans fit into most of our sites and all sites are bigger than most caravan parks. We have a lot of trouble growing grass in granite and as you suggested we are always trying to improve the park. Please call again and we will shout you a night. Cheers Pete...

Hi, do you have a site available for the 18-20 January 17.

Hi, there is a swimming area, it does not have sand like a beach however it is not weedy either, it's quite stable and shallow. There were a few toddlers there on the day we were there, most had life jackets on just to be safe too. Hope that helps.
