We stopped in Rugeley as a middle point on the way home after a long weekend camping in the Lake District. The hotel is in a busy area next to a Subway and a Burger King so it's noisy and there's lots of traffic and whilst parking is free, it's not easy. We got inside, nobody was at reception and there wasn't a bell to press. There was a sign giving an 0800 number to dial for assistance at reception. 5 minutes later somebody showed up and gave us our room key. Our priority was showering, so I was disappointed to find mid-shower that there was no shampoo or no soap. After 3 days of wild camping in the Lake District, I really needed soap! My partner went to reception to ask, but the receptionist was dealing with an ambulance crew bringing back a homeless and inebriated resident to the Travelodge, so he didn't feel it was appropriate to wait at the reception, but the receptionist said she'd be with us shortly. After 30 minutes, we'd had no further help from the receptionist, I was still in a towel, but we decided to leave and stay elsewhere. When we got outside, the receptionist was chatting to others and when we questioned this, we were told 'she didn't know what room we were in', in spite of having checked us in less than 1 hour previously, and didn't apologise for the poor service. This was a very unpleasant stay, a shower should not be a luxury. If both soap and shampoo dispensers are empty, it does beg the question of what else isn't checked when the rooms are cleaned. We contacted Travelodge customer services afterwards in the hope of a refund as we stayed less than an hour, but the manager of the Rugeley Hotel never bothered to respond to our concerns. We stayed at the Premier Inn in Lichfield instead which was about £5 more, it was infinitely nicer, the rooms were in better condition, the staff were friendly and service was prompt.…
Stayed for two nights to visit Alton Towers. It felt safe, well organised and was scrupulously clean. Staff were pleasant. The only drawback to staying here is the Colliery Restaurant next door. Couldn’t get an evening meal and their cleaners are obviously not The same as at the Travelodge! Toilets were disgusting but not Travelodge’s fault
I generally tend to avoid Travelodge's as a matter of course after more than a few negative experiences a few years ago, but as the premier inn was astronomically priced (and quite far out of town!) I instead went for the Travelodge - and I'm very glad I did. Under £35 a night, room completely spotless, bed very comfortable and the discount at Wetherspoons was just icing on the cake (and unexpected)! I think they only negative I could have - and this applies across the whole Travelodge chain not just this hotel - is the lack of free WiFi; literally every other hotel chain offers this (even Premier Inn only charge for higher speeds) and I think it's a bit poor that it isn't available here, but again as I said that's not a fault of the hotel itself. Absolutely recommended
Put in a tired old room next to reception so also noisy. No towels or soap, tv remote didnt work and the room was freezing when I got there. Spent 2 hours in my coat while it warmed up. Stains on the floor, holes in the bed sheets etc. etc.
When ordering website gave option of extra bed in family room. On arrival told could not cater for extra bed. No door locks on bathroom, couldnt leave after 10pm to get food or smoke and one of the bed frames was broken. All in all disappointing
