The Dovecote Inn in Laxton; the archetypal English country inn. Wanting to base ourselves in this part of Nottinghamshire so as to explore Sherwood Forest we were initially disappointed by the accommodation options available in that part of the world. However, after a little online digging the Dovecote Inn presented itself, and as our luck had it one room was left. Situated a short drive east of Edwinstowe (which is perhaps the principle settlement from which to visit Sherwood) Laxton and the Dovecote Inn cannot be recommended more for couple wishing to stay in the area. The rooms (of which there are two, plus a suite) are ridiculously cosy, though at 6'1 I did have to watch myself with the charming wooden beams. A breakfast table was already laid out in our room on arrival. Whether this is a COVID-19 workaround on not we loved the idea. When making our room booking the owner had asked if we wanted to book a table for the Saturday night, at which point we asked him to reel off a few of the items on the menu. We booked after hearing about three options. We were rewarded with a beautiful meal, and opted for three courses. It must be said that while we liked our food the portion sizes were not overwhelming, and thank goodness they weren't! Instead of outfacing ourselves we could enjoy various courses all of which were excellent. The vegi burger we had as a main (topped with root vegetables, which was new on us) was one of the best burgers we've ever had; and we've had a lot of vegi burgers! Principally we were served by two young women and both were a credit to the place; welcoming, attentive and couldn't have been friendlier. If wanting to set up camp for the night in the vicinity of Sherwood do yourself a favour and book here (for dinner and lodgings), you will not be disappointed.…
Three of us went lunchtime, for a birthday meal.Decided we would have a main and dessert. The potato risotto was recommended by a member of the family, who had been the week before. So that’s what we all ordered. When it was brought to the table, thought it was a small portion! Four forkfuls later we had all finished! All commentated that it was the smallest Main course we had ever had.Was asked if everything was okay,I commented that there wasn’t much of it and said I wished I had something else.was offered some chips maybe, but declined.so we paid and left.I was going to speak to the owner quietly but he was busy with other customers.Just add that the risotto was very tasty ,at £10 for the main course a bit of a disaster.
Last night I went to the Dovecote Inn at Laxton with family and friends, recommended by one of my daughters friends. The food and service was outstanding I would highly recommend! The katsu curry chicken was amazing!!!
WOW! Hand on heart that was one of the best burger and chips we have ever had. Both the beef and lamb burgers were amazing 😉 can’t wait for Sunday dinner tomorrow and to eat in the restaurant once the restrictions are lifted.
This evening my husband, daughter and I went for dinner at the Dovecote inn....and what a lovely evening we had. Despite a difficult time during the Coronavirus problem, the landlord and staff were so cheery, welcoming and the food was delicious! We had had sea bass, fish and chips and belly pork... all were cooked to perfection and piping hot. The sticky toffee pudding with banana ice cream finished a perfect meal! We will be back and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
