Good value rooms on this costly island first attracted me and on arrival, a roaring fire and friendly host confirmed the choice was a good one. The barman carried bags to our room (which is a rare courtesy these days) and the crab sandwiches were more than generous and very tasty on arrival. Breakfast the following day was equally delicious and plentiful and the room was clean and nicely appointed with a very comfy mattress to ease the aches after a long walk around this enchanting island. The evening meal wasn’t fine dining but the Ship doesn’t pretend to offer that and it was filling and flavoursome. Great range of beers and a distillery in the lovely gardens makes for interesting viewing when the local gin manufacturer is brewing up.
Overall, a great stay thanks to great hosts and a tidy Inn. Thank you

From the moment we arrived to when we left, Paul and his team were friendly, attentive, welcoming and helpful. The inn is so warm and welcoming with a cosy fire in the hearth and heat coming through the back of the wall fixed bench seating, for a mid January break this was just spot on.

We were shown to our room which was generously sized with a very comfortable king sized bed and full bath with shower in the bathroom which is honestly bigger than my small bedroom at home. Fresh clean towels, mini soap and towelling robes are a lovely touch and much appreciated after a bath at the end of a long walk. Also provided is a great hospitality tray, a large tv and hairdryer in the dressing table.

With a wardrobe, drawers and dressing table this room provides plenty of storage for even a week's stay and the chaise was great for taking the weight off.

We enjoyed a very tasty and substantial breakfast every day, with something to suit everyone and nothing seems too much trouble for Paul or his team. Breakfast took us all the way to evening meal even with active days. We decided to set up a tab, which was very convenient and enjoyed great meals including veggie options, steak and fish as well as dessert. Both being gluten free wasn't an issue and whoever was in the kitchen was always happy to help.

Overall we had an amazing time and will definitely be back as soon as we can.

A great chunky, old, stone-built pub, within spitting distance of Lindisfarne’s castle and Priory. The Ship has decent real ales and sandwiches etc available in the bar, while up a steep flight of stairs the rooms are small but perfectly comfortable. In fact, our bed was dreamily soft and we both slept exceptionally well, with window open onto a starlit sky and amid perfect silence, broken only by the morning birdsong. Breakfast (full English) was generously proportioned and really good, though — nitpicking here I guess — the orange juice was from concentrate, not fresh. We didn’t eat supper here so can’t give an opinion on that. The landlord seemed slightly quiet and retiring to begin with, but when the chance arose he did chat to us, telling us some interesting stuff about the island and even showing us some spectacular photos he’d taken. As with the very few other outlets on Holy Island, a night at the Ship is not especially cheap, but it’s no more expensive than elsewhere either, and for our money it seemed to have the right blend of character and comfort. Anyway, we left having had a very pleasant stay.

We came and was told the ship inn was nice we ordered a large glass of white wine which was aufel a glass of coke which had almost none carbonated water. This was just the start we tried to eat a steak burger which was the cheapest processed burger meat I have ever eaten. Coleslaw heavily processed a green salad which would of been okay but was coved in a vinegret. The whole meal could not of cost more than three pounds at the very most and was charged seventeen pounds mighty nine. Do not waste your money

Cannot comment on the rooms as we did not stay there, we rented a flat over the road 20 yds away, but we went there to eat, twice.
Terrible, absolutely terrible.
We arrived on the island during a film being made, we were not made aware that restaurants were fully booked weeks in advance
We tried to have a meal in the ship.
We managed to get a table when every other table had a reserved sign on, we were refused food.
I spoke to the manager (a very rude, abrupt man ) who eventually agreed to a plate of chips and some sliced bread to make chip butties.
They charged £11 for 8 Chunky chips and 3 Slices of bread with cheap margerine.
He literally threw them on the table.
We gave him the benefit of doubt due to the island being very busy and returned a few days later for a "holy island crab sandwich" @ £15 × 2, it was not crab as we know it, more like Princes Shippams crab paste, terrible.
Avoid

We spent a week on Holy Island for the annual archaeological dig and specifically chose room 3 at the Ship as it was the only room with a bath. From the pictures on the website the room seemed quite small so we were delighted when we got there to find it was actually quite big with a large bathroom and a huge - all important - bath which provides a good hour’s soaking each day after the excavation.

Both the room and bathroom were immaculately tidy and appeared to have been recently modernised. There was a good view over the lovely beer garden which was lovely to sit in, in the early evening with a beer (the Wagtail went down very well) and enjoy the family of almost tame sparrows nesting somewhere nearby whoosh across the garden. There was a kettle in the room but no complimentary tea or coffee however that was quickly put right once pointed out.

Everyone on the dig (it was our first time) said how good the food was at the Ship and it truly was. In fact we ate there each of the seven nights we stayed on the island working our way through the menu... The steak and ale pie I had twice and was fantastic. The (fresh, not frozen) fish and chips were great too and my only small criticism was that the fish was perhaps fried just a bit too long for my liking. The starters were lovely too especially the chicken pakora.

As the portions are quite large I only had a small breakfast (keeping the ‘full Northumbrian’ for the last day in advance of a six hour drive back to London. They clearly have a good chef.

We also discovered that the Ship distills its own gin and I was quickly hooked on the Sea Pink. I was a bit dismayed to find they had sold out when I tried to buy a bottle to bring home but Paul (who along with the other members of staff was helpful and attentive to us throughout the stay despite the added pressures of Covid on the Ship) told me there were a few bottles left for sale in the ice cream shop (!) just up the road so I did managed to get one to bring home.

We really enjoyed our time at the Ship and have already booked another week in Room 3 for next year’s dig in 2021.

This place is frantic when all the tourists are in and fairly chilled in the evenings. The owner’s mood is obviously affected by this. He seems rather abrupt but I think it’s just his way - definitely not the typical genial host.
The menu was rather limited and there’s a definite greasy smell pervading the place due to most items being fried. Not the best cooking. Fish overcooked so dry and hard in places, top batter crunchy and soggy underneath. Dining area looked basic and ‘dirty old pub-y’
Easy ambience in the evening and I was left alone to read my book comfortably. Not great - not terrible but wouldn’t eat there again probably.

Stayed here for one night after finishing the St Cuthberts Way ,fab old pub with rooms and a very convivial atmosphere. Paul the Manager and all the other staff we came in contact with were friendly and helpful .We had dinner here and our choices were all very good and everyone else seemed to be enjoying there's. Great selection of beers etc etc and a suntrap of a beer garden Room was absolutely fine with all that one needs for a comfortable stay. Breakfast was very good with lots of choices .All in all we loved our stay and hope to return.

Excellent location for access to the Castle, Priory etc. Warmly welcomed and informative check-in so that we immediately felt at home. Hand sanitiser available and staff wore masks at all times. Spaces between seating were adequate and we felt very safe there, especially as we had been shielding for a long period of time. We were very grateful for this care, especially as restrictions are lifting somewhat. Room was very comfortable and had everything we could need. Irons were available on request but not left in the room. Hospitality tray had a wide selection of hot drinks and you only had to ask for more of anything you used up. If we had felt anything more was needed we only had to ask. It was really quiet and peaceful and it made it very easy to shift down a few gears into a gentler way of life. The room was spotless, as was the en-suite bathroom. Private resident's access so that you didn't have to go through the pub if you didn't wish to, or feel restrained by opening/closing times. Food was superb throughout, with a particular emphasis on local fresh seafood. Our thanks to the chef! We could not praise all the staff enough for their attention to detail. Friendly, approachable at all times, great sense of humour, helpful, polite - what more could I say? We loved everything about The Ship Inn and are already planning a return visit.

Had a day trip to Lindisfarne last year, Booked and had lunch here and it was superb. Booked another day trip this year, rang The Ship and was told that it was no longer possible to book lunch and that we could just turn up and come in if a seat was available. Owing to staff shortages lunchtime hot meals were no longer possible but sandwiches were. We arrived in Lindisfarne, made our way to The Ship Hotel to be met with a notice "Lunchtime bookings full'. I was told that lunchtime bookings weren't possible, so what's going on as the information is conflicting with what I was verbally told? We made our way to The Crown and Anchor where it was rammed but eventually got a seat and a lovely hot meal which was delicious and served quickly. They obviously could get the staff.!

As far as I am aware, pets are only permitted in the beer garden, not in the accommodation, our room was beautiful, hope this helps, enjoy.

is there car parking?
Answer from Andrewtheship
Holy Island4 contributions1 helpful vote
If you are just visiting for the day there is a main pay car park approx 5 minutes walk to the main village/The Ship Inn and if you are staying on the island you are classified as a temporary resident for the duration of your stay and may enter the village and park near to where you are staying. Hope this helps?
