We stayed here for 2 nights last week, a little unsure what to expect after reading the mixed reviews. It is a wonderfully elegant building with lots of style but it needs a lot of money spending on it to realise its potential. Walking round the outside, it was obvious that major work is needed. Likewise the garden, which could...

We had a room that was on the second floor right at the back of the hotel so no noise at all, it felt like we were the only ones at the hotel it was that quiet Room was huge for just two of us, double and single bed, bathroom was big also, shower was really hot and worked as...

The royal was once probably a top hotel, looks last refurbished in 80s/90s it needs serious investment which does not seem to be forthcoming, the garden is overgrown, the carpark pay and display (free if stay) probably keeps the hotel affloat. The room was tired and dated, the door card would not work very well, the toilet would overrun and...

As others have said this looks like it was once a lovely place...but that was a long long time ago! Worn out carpets, peeling paint, damaged woodwork, rotting windows, broken furniture - the list goes on. Staff were friendly enough but compared to even a basic Premier Inn this hotel is in need of serious upgrading. Sorry, but will not...

Forget the anonymous 'charm' of chain hotels. The Royal has character and is worth a visit for this alone. The exterior is in need of some TLC and the 'temporary' wheelchair ramp was a hazard for any walking guests but the welcome was friendly and the entrance hall impressive. Our room on the second floor (40 steps and no lift)...

Recently spent one night in the Royal for a leisure visit to Ashby and I was nervous, reading other reviews. Ok, it is an old Hotel but I was first met by a very pleasant receptionist, both on checking in and also checking out. My room, number 226 was fine, not luxurious but perfectually ok for a one night stay....

Due to being in the area for the night me and my partner along with another couple stayed here, we payed £50 for our room and was not very impressed with it. It was very small and the bathroom was terrible the floor was disturbingly grotty and the radiator (which was on all night) had sellotape on instead of just...

A proper old school hotel, with lots of charm and friendly staff. I wish there were more hotels like this around rather than the faceless chains which are so abundant. I look forward to having an excuse to stay again.

After reading some of the reviews I was a little worried but arrived at The Royal Hotel with an open mind. I was greeted with smiles by a very friendly and kind receptionist who sweetly gave me a room with a bathtub as I asked for one. The hotel was clean and warm and the staff are so so friendly...
