Welcoming staff and lovely lunch with my chum and our two greys Ted and Daisy. Had the venison toad in the hole which was truly scrumptious. Unfortunately no room for a pud but was very tempted. And both dogs got special ear tickles from the barman. What's not to like in this wonderful place?

The Ship is a few minutes walking distance from the beautiful, long shingle beach at Dunwich. It's a gorgeous part of Suffolk, quite unspoilt. The Ship prides itself on its food and rightly so. The portions are generous but that's not what it's about. It's the quality of the locally sourced ingredients and the focus on taste. The effect is...

Just had an amazing meal at this gorgeous place! I had a super piece of Lowestoft cod, with mashed new potatoes and a caper and butter sauce. The husband had the roast beef and said it was one of the best roasts he's ever eaten out and the desserts were to die for! I can recommend the brownie, cheesecake or...

This is a very good place for a weekend away with your pooch, four legged friends are welcome in the bar and also in certain rooms for breakfast. We ate in the bar area on both of our nights there and quickly got into interesting conversations with other dog owners which was very relaxed and pleasant. The food was well...

We stayed for one night, would have been more if not for family commitments. You can book in from 2pm onwards, which we found extremely convenient. Our room was to die for, and the bed gave us our best nights sleep of this trip so far. Great beer, great food and great staff made this a pleasureable experience. Internet in our...

We stayed at the Ship, for 3 nights at the beginning of February. We took our Labrador, Ted. We were given a room which was at the back of the building, which opened onto the garden, which was handy with the dog being with us. It was a very quiet area of the pub. The room was warm, & clean,...

Hi Tracy, thanks for your kind words. Apologies for the lack of a roast for your evening meal on Sunday – they are extremely sought after and can sometimes go before the end of the day. We are glad Ted enjoyed his stay and your room Beacon Hill is delightful for dog owners who can let their dog (or dogs!)...

We had a lovely light lunch and drink after a brisk walk on the beach. Fresh food and clean surroundings. We sat in the conservatory as it was sunny. The court yard looked fabulous with care taken with pots of flowers and herbs.

Hi Philippa, thank you for your review. We hope your friend had a wonderful birthday with us. Thank you for your kind words about our courtyard – we try hard to make it an inviting place to sit and have a drink or two, especially in the summer! We look forward to seeing you again.

We have just got back from a very enjoyable night away in fascinating Dunwich, and are already dreaming about a return visit to 'The Ship' - I am sure if we do return I will feel able to give this old smugglers inn a much higher score, armed as we will be on a repeat visit with some necessary fore...

Our second stay at The Ship. Good food, good beer, enjoyable fellow guests and drinkers. Greyfriars room was ideal for our aged pointer. The en-suite is spotless and spacious ; however, it would benefit from the addition of some shelving for toiletries and make-up.

Many thanks for such a lovely review. Our stable rooms are great when staying with dogs and I am delighted you enjoyed the room. We are currently looking at all the facilities in our bedrooms, and I think shelving will certainly be part of the focus.

Been here before and last time wasnt a very good experience with waiting staff...but this time was very good. Friendly staff and great food. No finger bowl though with shell on prawns. Very varied menu so was spoilt for choice.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
