Hotel has all the amenities except, for, strangely, telephones in the room. Wonder why. Nice gym, great lounge area, excellent breakfasts and, above all, very very helpful and friendly staff. Only two small negatives about the hotel: the formal evening restaurant is over-priced, and the lounge area could be better lit (current lighting makes it indeed very somber when you...

We were moved here as the Radisson Blu is being refurbished. To be honest we were quite happy with the move. This hotel has more history and is a more interesting building, The location is a 10 minute walk up the valley away from the town's main centre. Not a problem as it's on paved roads with street lights. It...

A warm nice welcome from a polite young lady who upgrade us to a suite. What a surprise. But, all the people on this hotel were very polite and service minded. You feel as you was at home, free coffee/tea 24 hour, vaffel in the afternoon, comfertable saloons, a cosy bar and a splendid restaurant. The few minutes you need...

The hotel is nice. Free breakfast with good choices. Even gluten free for those who need it. It's very clean. Partly because of the local custom to take of the shoes. But also because the cleaners do a nice job. The in-house restaurant serves free breakfast for guests in the morning. And in the evening they serve very nice food....

Spent four nights including New Year's Eve shrouded in total darkness. Does the dark have the effect of calming people, or is it the general atmosphere? Anyway, our little part of various ages all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Room, food good, New Year Eve's special menue was fabulous, and included grouse and the tenderest raindeer fillet any of us had...

Hotel is located about 10 min. walk from centre which is really not too far in this type of scenery. Room was clean, tidy and warm. Small minus that radiator in the bathroom wasn't working so it took bit longer to dry the clothes. I really liked that hotel has sauna which is spot on to use it after interesting...

I spent 2 nights in this hotel January 2015 on a business/work related trip. The rooms were nice and clean, good in size and the bathroom was large and spacey. They have a pretty good WIFI, but weather it was free or not I can't say. It might have been prepaid by my employer. The breakfast was a small buffet,...

Visiting Svalbard is an unforgettable experience in itself. A bonus of course is, if you stay at a great hotel. This choice was perfect. The restaurant has delicious food and good service. The front office staff (Gregor in specific) were very helpful and you could tell that he really enjoys his work. The hotel is clean and it makes you...

... as the title suggests we had, what is probably, a unique experience with The Spitsbergen Hotel. Unfortunately we were staying when the hurricane force winds and white out occurred, grounding planes for a few days and forcing everyone to stay indoors. The hotel staff were brilliant with us, even though many of them had been due to head home...

This warm, friendly and cosy hotel was the perfect backdrop to our trip of a lifetime to Svalbard - something I would strongly recommend anybody to do, whilst they have the chance. Even though the sun didn't rise once during our stay in January, we were very happy with our room and the facilities at the Spitsbergen Hotel. The bar...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
At Spitsbergen Hotel you can enjoy modern comforts in historical surrounds – the foundations this impressive building were set back in 1946. The building soon became known as ‘Funken’, as it housed the single administrative workers or ‘funksjonærer’, as well as being the reception centre for the mining company ‘Store Norske’. The building was a hive of activity and social activity for the company’s office workers. It was only in the middle of the 1980s that the last office workers moved out, and ‘Funken’ began to be used as housing for visitors. In 1993 the building was bought by Spitsbergen Travel, at which point extensions were made including the new restaurant. Throughout the additions and renovations, serious work has been done to protect the unique history and atmosphere of Spitsbergen Hotel – we hope you enjoy it, and your stay! ... more   less
