Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. The bar and dining area are fantastic. Beautiful restoration of an old, old building. Hotel stay was just okay. The ‘lounge’ is really the entrance hallway and it is looking a bit like a storage spot at the moment. Rooms are nicely decorated, but dark with old air conditioning that took ages to warm the room and made weird sounds through the night. The shared kitchen means that there is nothing in your room, not even a glass. Not sure it’s worth the cost.

Staying at campsite in Melrose and came here for dinner. It was the end of January and even though a Friday night it was very quiet. There is an extensive menu and the schnitzels with different toppings looked interesting. Unfoutuately they had run out of the kangaroo one I wanted to try so opted for the beef instead with "King of the Mount" topping. The beef itself was a little tough but the toppings were good.
This place also did good cider on tap which haven't found anywhere else.
Walked past the other pub/hotel on way back which was busier with drinkers but glad we ate where we did.

We stayed one night in the Green Truck on our way to the Flinders Ranges. The truck was well set up and the air conditioner worked to cool the room down as it was a bit warm when we arrived. The shower was good much to our surprise. We ate in the North Star Inn Restaurant and the meal was very good. Breakfast was a bit tricky as we are early risers and the 2 cafes in town don't open early. Great location to explore the area and do some wine tasting at a nearby winery.

Enjoyed a delicious steak in this iconic hotel at the southern gateway to the Flinders. From the moment we arrived - this hotel is overflowing with Aussie hospitality, delicious food and an extensive list of South Australian wines from the Clare Valley through to the Fleurieu. Local artwork on the walls is very impressive- great to see a local business supporting other local businesses. You will not leave disappointed

This hotel offer great potential if only a new coat of paint and improved pillow options were available. The rooms was large and the bathroom was clean and spacious. The restaurant provided a great rib eye steak. Bookings essential during the COVID restrictions.

Spacious room with comfortable bed and spotless bathroom with toiletries. There was a common area with complimentary T+C, biscuits, toast and cereal which was a nice touch and generous. I also enjoyed my meal in the pub downstairs.

A weird place. On arrival the bar tender got off her phone and and seemed really puzzled that there were people arriving for their book accommodation (we were a party of 4 and two rooms). can't explain the reception other than just plan weird. Accommodation was good, rooms good, bed good, bathroom good.

The restaurant was good as well, but again the whole set up was just plain weird. Bar tender and restaurant manager just seemed to be in another world. Maybe it was us who were in another world?

...the weirdness aside, still recommend.

The accommodation didn’t meet our expectations. We booked a balcony room. The room was somewhat rustic, rather than “luxury ensuite in a stylish refurbished retro design”. The balcony was furnished with a shabby table and chairs. The bathroom was good and spacious. The communal kitchen had a small refrigerator that hadn’t been defrosted since the last ice age, but was functional. Overall, I think that the price of $175 was expensive for what we got and I wouldn’t recommend it to friends.

Went for dinner.
The ladies at the bar were very blunt, no hospitality. Fans above the dining were caked in dust, glad they weren't on as I'd rather not have extra seasoning on my food.
Fire hazard of an inward exit door that had fire wood stacked against it outside. Cheesy garlic bread was cheesy, but the bread soggy and cold. Was made to order food from one side of the bar, and told to order drinks at the bar, once ordered drink, I paid for drinks where I had just ordered food. Soft drink can was flat, table water was brown.

Staying in the ‘trucks’ was good fun. Four of us booked them both. We hadn’t realised they’d been there for many years (but when you get inside you can tell their age from the fit out) and a recent Advertiser travel article prompted us to book. We wanted to walk up Mt Remarkable and had assumed we’d just stay in a normal pub room. That’s probably what we’d do next time in Melrose as I think the trucks are a fun gimmick but the novelty wouldn’t last for two visits.
The pros are that the beds are v comfy, it’s fun sitting out on the little balcony (green truck) looking at the view with a drink, and the start of the summit walk is close. The online booking process was simple.
Unfortunately the heating in the red truck is strange as it is right over the bed and it struggles to heat up the other end of the room, but you also don’t really want a blasting heater blowing on you all night when you are trying to sleep.
The green truck is much better if you want to sit and relax a bit as it has a little lounge area with sofa bed. In the red truck to relax you really just have to lay down on the bed!
Something a bit different and fun to try and glad we did so. If only dinner in the pub was fun too it would have been a better stay - the dining experience was not good at all!
