Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It has been 15 years already and I still miss this place, te team and the ambiance ! I have spent there some of the best months of my youth and have had the chance to meet W and to help him in his advandidj adventure. Now, it was a long time ago and I hope that this vibrant energy and amazing welcoming is still there. Take care guys. Happy new year from Tristan, Søren and Viggø !

I first stayed here in 1997. The best time of my life. I've been back a few times over the years. What I don't understand is why people give the place a bad name but stay for 6 months. If you don't like it leave and be miserable somewhere else. Enough said. Hello T and M.

We booked for 2 weeks and ended up staying for 5 months. Of all the hostels in the Riverland area, this is definitely the one to stay in if you intend to find regional work for a WHV. The pool is a godsend after a day's outdoor work, and there's plenty of space to find your own area to chill out if you fancy some quiet time. Met some amazing people and would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone looking for regional work in the area. The only drawback is that there's no air conditioning, which can be a problem over a very hot SA summer.

Actually the hostel is a nice Place with a nice area but a lot of things are falling apart the sauna is dirty and stinky cause everyone is using it without towels, the hot water wasn't working very well so i had to take a cold shower several times and you have to be lucky to don't burn your stuff in the oven cause it's nearly broken
As i left the hostel in the beginning of august the bedbuckproblem was still existing
I stayed 5 months in berri cause i was hoping to collect all my days for the 2nd Year Visa in that time but the jobsituation was awful and so i left this working hostel without my days. The owner was offering less jobs so i had to search on my own...With a really terrible wifisituation
The owner also was yelling at me and i found during my stay there some notes which were offending the guests in a really rude way
At least i have to say that im really disappointed cause i heard a lot of good reviews about this place but i've got the feeling it's not the same anymore

Thank you for your review. I'm happy for you and that group of friends of yours that stayed at Berri Backpackers. As I see you support each other. I expected this to happen but what can I do I just have to live with it and move on. In fact I'm expecting two more of those reviews and hope that all of you are happy after using reviews as weapons. The Sauna is cleaned once a week properly and three times a week after every three hours sauna session hosed down so why talk the sauna bad rather then appreciate that we have a sauna. Why blame the Hostel or its staff if it's the Backpackers that don't use a towel. I'm sorry if you felt offended by that. The water issue was temporary and is now fixed as I wrote in a previous reply to one of your friends review. Despite the one hot water service playing up there were three other hot water services for several other shower available why haven't you used them? Work was available for most of our guests, unfortunately you never know what happens if weatherconditions cross our plan and damage the fruit crops. Work is also market depending. I as the owner of Berri Backpackers don't even deal with workplacement anymore but my manager does but he can't predict the weather and fruitseason either. The fruit industry does not come with guarantees for farmwork. If the bedbug problem was still not eliminated why wouldn't someone come and tell my manager or come to see me since I live onsite. The oven did what its supposed to do! Heat up or bake your food, if you leave it to long in the oven it happens to burn. We have a print out in the kitchen that says please do not abuse our internet or download torrents because it causes traffic jams and some people may not be able to use our free wifi. If you don't respect each other then that is what happens. Some people have difficulties using the internet. This is out of our hands. What note are you talking about the only notes we're putting up are joboffers and occationally a reminder that we have houserules. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your stay in Australia.

First, I'm not here to destroy the reputation of this hostel but just want to be honest and true about my experience in here.

Over my 2 years in Australia I've spent almost 11 months in total in this place where I've met so many incredible people. I obviously came back to save money but also because of the incredible mood and connection with the berri family.

This mood and atmosphere is due ONLY to the people and also to the incredible manager and obviously not due to the owner who is tired of backpackers and only care about money.

He won't spend money on updating the place, only spends money when something breaks etc, wants a quiet life and forgets he owns a busy popular working Backpackers hostel. He's also living on site which is not the best when you want a quiet life.

If you like to party, listen to music and have few drinks after a hard week of farm work on the weekends, the owner will come into the games room really angry to confiscate the small speakers like JBL or UE Boom (around 10pm on Saturday night) because he cannot sleep. He will also threaten you to kick you out if you put the music back on and he will keep your speaker until the day you leave the hostel.

This place could be so so so much better if a lot of stuff would be replaced/renovated such as :

- washing machines (they make a lot of stains on the clothes)
- fridges (too old and not enough space for everyone)
- cutlery
- aircon is only available in the living room
- not enough heater during winter
- wifi is only available around the reception and the broadband is not even 1Mo to share with 80 people which means no wifi working in the hostel when everyone is back from work
- gym room is dirty and full of dust
- tennis court is abandoned such as the soccer pitch

This place is supposed to be a working hostel and the owner should provide job offers but pretty much all backpackers find a job on their own and give their position to some other backpackers before leaving the hostel.

Dear Cedric, I expected this to happen as all your friends have left now. Obviously you've learned nothing. We have HOUSERULES for a reason. They don't just come out of the blue. We have neighbors that have been complaining in the past and as we like to keep a good relationship to them we have to respect there peace of mind. Uncountable times have I told you guys to turn down the volume and warned if its to loud again I'll take your speakers away to be returned when you leave. We're an accommodation provider not a night club. Yes I need my sleep too and so do other guests staying within the hostel working on weekends too. They may not say so to you but they do to me. Regarding Washing machine, didn't we just buy a new one? Cutlery disappears constantly because people leave them in their car or just trough them into the bin as to lazy to wash them. Soccer field? The manager that is incredible like you said and I think you're right there spend hours doing up the soccer patch right? The GYM which you used a lot while listening to obnoxious music blasting away, I cleaned myself the last few weeks once a week. Haven't we (my wife and I) just spend 3 month refurbishing the summerhouses? New mattresses, floor, new paint job, furniture and even a new fridge in the summerhouse you stayed at. Well, don't look so new anymore since you lived there for a few month as you don’t treat stuff well that’s no your own but your speaker is holy and if taken away you become very nasty. Time to grow up my friend. As for the rest I'm getting tired of spending more time explaining myself. Just a little reminder your best friend was given way to many chances to stay, we should have made you guys leave a while ago after you burned our garden ornaments, sculpture and garden furniture on our fire pit last year. Even the police came around on several occasions due to your friends unlawful and rule breaking activities. Well, no need to add anymore to this. Hope karma will sort you out.

I spent 11 months in total during the last 20 months in this working backpackers hostel and this place was special for me. I lived lot of beautiful moments over there.
All the guests are here to do their farm days (88 days minimum) to be eligible for the 2d year visa, and they stay generally between 2 and 5 months. So, it gives us the time to know everyone and create strong relationships. This place is like a friendly community and we all constitute a big "family". I met heaps of amazing people.
There is something special between those walls, a nice fraternity mood, created by all backpackers living inside.

During my time spent here, different managers worked for the owner and they did a good job. The manager in place at the moment is a good one.

But if this place is a good one, and it's a perfect area to do his farm days and meet incredible persons, it's absolutely not thanks to the owner.
Unfortunately, he lets this place fall into disrepair and become outmoded.
- He's never buying something new to ameliorate the quality of the hostel, and try to fix it by himself without talent. This place never changed at all the last 10 years.. He refuses to spend money on updating his place.
- He's leaving on site and wants a very quiet life... but he totally forgets he owns a busy popular working backpackers hostel, with people living inside and needing to relax and enjoy their free time after work and during the weekends.
An example: we celebrated the birthday of 3 people on a Saturday night (the manager was one of them) and played music thanks to a portable UE boom speaker (not a big sound system) in the community room. The owner came at 9.50pm screaming on us, arguing against the "loud" music and taking abusively the speaker. The only possibility to take it back was to leave the hostel immediately... This is an example amongst lot of others.
- Berri is a very hot place during the summer time (35-45°C) and very cold during the night in winter time (0-5°C). Obviously, it's every year like this. But apparently not for him, because there is no air-conditioned at all in all rooms, just 1 fan/room moving the hot air without to refresh nothing. The buildings have a bad isolation and it's really cold in winter. But he doesn't care at all; he just gives 1 small and unworking heater for few rooms, and even not for all of them. Every guest has to buy one for his room to be enough warm to sleep correctly.
- The community room is very bad isolated and has not heater inside, so it's very difficult to spend time all together in it during the winter time.
- He furnishes all cutleries, pots and pans but half of them are broken and there are not enough for the number of guests living inside. Even if some are stolen, he musts invest on it more often or find another way to provide all things we need (give an assortment of each cutlery against a deposit..).
- The fridges in the main building are old and there is not enough space for everybody. The oven in the summer houses are not working since a year now.
- The washing machine created brown stains everytime on all white clothes. It's really annoying when it costs you 3$ to damage your clothes, isn't it? There is a new one now, but the owner took too much time to buy it (almost a year as well).
- The soccer and tennis pitches, the gym and yoga rooms exist but are in a very bad conditions. Same things for the ping-pong and pool tables.
- There are different places to sleep: couple rooms, 4 bedrooms, 6 bedrooms, 8 bedrooms, a 4 beds yourte, a 3 beds tepee, caravans.. The confort and conditions are not equals but everybody has to pay the same price, that's not fair.
- The wifi is terrible and never working correctly. That's a big problem when we're all leaving far from our families and looking for jobs around.
- It's a working hostel but the owner is doing nothing to offer jobs for his customers. We have to find by ourselves and only by ourselves our jobs. I worked for more than 10 different farmers/companies during my time in Berri and never found something thanks to him. He just offer few cashing hand jobs for few days. Nothing else.

I keep lot of incredible memories from this place. It's a nice one to stay and do your farm days, when you can close your eyes on all inconvinience you could meet over there.
The hostel has a strong potential and could be exceptional with another owner, who will be friendly, not stingy and more caring about his customers than his own tranquility.

And again, the internet is great isn't it. Well like you said we are in a very remote area, so to get hold of a trades person to fix and service appliances doesn't happen immediately out here same for the wifi connection, it takes time to finally get NBN out here. Apparently end of August. As for your claims regarding work. We are an accommodation provider in the first place and not a job agency, we help people find work or give details of growers and there are no guarantees for work. No commissions here either. And why blame me for not giving you work? That's why we have a manager, to help you find work, nothing to do with me. I wonder as to why people still listen to music here right now with an (ue) boom speaker? I've not taken there speakers away, cause they know when its loud enough. Nothing against music at a certain volume. You can even have fun at half the volume right? Anyways, people will always complain about something because it's in our nature. I wonder whether all of you 10, 20 people will leave a review now cause it gets boring now.

There is something special about this place. I think it must just have a self affirming aura that each wave of guests pick up and pass on to the next. Its no surprise so many people leave only to come back - home away from home is often used to describe it but not without justification.

I could go on about all the facilities, wonderful people and describe the great times I had, but ultimately all I have to say is this - if you need to get your farm days, just come here and be so very happy doing it. Yes, you might have to wait sometimes, and as with all long term places there are some niggles and things that could be improved (Beth ruining Christmas at the ever so awkward talent show springs to mind!), but these pale in significance when compared to the good.

So i stayed here for 3 months and although i had my personal differences with the owner here i can safely say i had the time of my life at Berri backpackers.
I have made friends for life and had experiences i will never forget and that was due to the hostel.
Its an amazing place it really is and i highly reccommend it to anybody.
I would say however i think the owner here just sometimes needs to remember backpackers are going to want have fun and get drunk etc thats part of it and maybe let a few things slide now and again. Truely unforgetable experience through good and bad so thankyou.
