From the moment you drive down the track into the rainforest you really feel that you have left this crazy new world behind. ( drive slowly the track is quite rough in places) The cottages are rustic, which fits beautifully into the rainforest.
As others have said from the moment you arrive the birds and marsupial’s will arrive to greet you. The Musky Rat Kangaroos and Paddy Mellons "love" banana's and banana skins but strip them into small strips so it is easy for them to pick up and eat. The birds will come and sit on your hand and eat the bananas or mealworms kindly provided by the owners of the property.
Inside the cottage you will find a huge comfy bed, with a built in wardrobe. So special to wake up in the morning and look out into pure rainforest.
In the sitting area a small sofa and wood fire. The fire is a bit of a challenge to lite and keep alight but once burning it quickly heats the cottage. There is a split system A/C if you prefer. The bathroom has a large spar, not something we used. The shower is in the spar and the floor of the spar can be a bit slippy when you are taking a shower.
The kitchen area is compact but has an oven with gas cook top, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. Utensils are limited so if self catering you might want to take a few items of your own. A lovely cottage with all you need for a couple of days, though in places it is starting to look like a little updating is needed.
There is a deck to it out and simply enjoy the peach of the rainforest - be careful. The deck is all brown timber, and is at 2 different heights, only the height of one step but as you are obviously looking out into the forest it is very easy to take a tumble , as both of us did , as there is no demarcation of any type, no deck railing at all.
There is a laundry to share with the other 3 cottages .
A really lovely place to stay, thank you to the owners for sharing such a very special place.

These themed cottages are gorgeous. Nestled in the rainforest and an abundance of wildlife at your doorstep. You will be greeted by John (a character!) who will make you feel right at home sending you off with all the information you need, a hamper packed with breakfast goodies and food for the Pademelons and myriad of bird life. The cabins contain everything you need, EVERYTHING! When we arrived at our cabin we didn’t even make it inside for half an hour, we were greeted by birds who are smart enough to know they have new guests with food! The Victorias Riflebird is beautiful and it’s true, when they fly their wings sound like rustling paper. John’s wife has made a photo book of the wildlife photos she’s taken and I suggest you take it with you when you step out onto your deck... trust me. We stayed two nights in the ‘Tuscany’ cottage and even that wasn’t enough. The cottages were spotless, the bed comphy and the free port went down a treat! Thanks John and Jenni... we will be back!

We came here on the advice of a friend and were thrilled with the whole experience. The cottages all had different themes and each tastefully done with its own birdbath and feeder strategically placed for photography. We stayed in Pioneer which we loved with all the quirky decorations reminding us of life back in the early part of last century. I was able to have a look at the Tuscany cottage which features an amazing bed head made by John and Jenny and a large still life in beautiful bronze tones painted by Jenny.

Some of the birds come and eat meal worms, which you get from the hosts, right from your hand and the rifle birds did their amazing dance right in front of us.

The cottages are set up with everything you need including coffee machine with coffee, milk frothing machine, salt and pepper, cooking oil, tomato and bbq sauce wood for the fire etc etc etc, even a glass of port.

Location is great, not far from Yungaburra and lots of lovely drives and in walking distance of the cafe/gallery at Lake Eacham tourist park.

My husband and I absolutely loved our stay in these beautiful cottages. We stayed in the Bali which is the most private and has an elevated deck, perfect for our incredible rifle bird display both morning and evening.Be patient as they love to puff up and then suddenly throw a seriously mind blowing manoeuvre to spread their wings and it continues with bobbing and dancing. It is seriously the cleanest cottage we have stayed in and the kitchenware actually gleams like it has all been polished. So many thoughtful touches everywhere and it is lovely and close to the magic lake and Yungaburra. As it was July we really enjoyed the fire and the clean huge bath built for two...
John was a delight and was always eager to help in any way so this made our stay perfect in every way. Thank you so much for sharing your piece of Rainforst paradise with us.

This was our second stay at Crater Lakes and we loved it just as much as the first time. The cabins are well appointed, spacious and comfortable, the breakfast hamper was a lovely bonus and the spa most pleasant indeed! The up close and personal experience with the many bird species is really special, with the calls of Cat birds and Whip birds echoing through the rainforest that grows right to the edge of the deck. The location is handy to all the wonders and delights of the Atherton Tablelands making it an ideal base to explore from. You might also be quite happy stocking up on a few supplies and just staying in the cabin for a night or two enjoying a wine or the complimentary port in front of the fire. Whatever the purpose of your stay in the area, I highly recommended Crater Lakes cabins.

We’ve walked a lot and done plenty of swimming in the rainforests of Far North Queensland over the 10 years we lived here while raising four children, but until we stayed six nights in the Crater Lakes Rainforest Cottages up on the Atherton Tableland, we never lived in the rainforest. We stayed in one of four cottages, each of which is separate from the others, and we fed the many birds and other animals that were fearless and clearly used to people being nice to them. Our cottage was large and very well appointed with all the amenities you need to live comfortably. John, our host, delivered wood for the fireplace and mealworms for the birds each day. As I type this, I can pause and look out across the private verandah and watch the birds and other wildlife not minding the rain nor us. In the end we couldn’t have asked for more thorough or friendlier service from our hosts with the result we had a terrific stay in the rainforest.

Our lodge was spacious and well equipped. It is in the heart of a tropical rainforest. This means it was surrounded by tropical plants, birds, animal and insects. Fantastic for wildlife spotting. The bed was comfy, plenty of hot water, and the drinking water as pure as could be from their own borehole. I reckon they could start anther businesses selling pue water!
John and Jill - our hosts made sure we had everything we could possibly need. Their breakfast hamper was wonderful, and they even supplied wood for the fire.
They have produced their own wildlife book with photos and explanations of the huge variety of wild life that can be found just in front of your lodge. Amazing!
Lake Eacham is just 500 metres away - clear fresh lake that is gorgeous to swim in.
On the negative side, being in a rainforest it is of course a bit dark and damp at times, it is a 10 minute drive into town, and the gravel road at the entrance can be a bit slippy in the rain.
However, it is an absolutely fabulous place, especially if you love your wildlife

So so special to relax and indulge with nature and wildlife. We will be back for sure. We were able to hand feed the Victorian rifle bird, Lewis honey eater and watch all other rainforest birds feed In front of us. We were provided with fruit for the honey eating birds and rainforest rodents and mealworms for other birds. Everything was well thought of and there was nothing missing. Thank you.

As John told us when we checked in "the wildlife comes to you". How true that was. We stayed for two days in the Pioneer Cottage, surrounded by rainforest, extremely comfortable and fitted out with everything you could wish for or need. However the highlight was undoubtedly the wildlife, particularly the birds which came up to and onto the veranda. Rifle birds displaying, honeyeaters, whipbirds, doves, etc, etc as well as spotted catbirds, which we had heard but never seen before. Added to that were frequent visits to the area in front of the cottage from Pademelons and Musky Rat kangaroos as well as exotic lizards. This was truly a special experience and we will certainly stay longer on our next visit.

We (couple) stayed at the Crater Lakes Rainforest Cottages for 3 nights and enjoyed a perfect rainforest experience in luxury whilst being up close and personal with the local endemic animals and birds. An amazing experience to hand feed a Victorian riflebird!
The cottage was scrupulously clean, linen wonderful, breakfast hamper generous and delicious, coffee machine a god send and all in a natural environment that demanded appreciation and relaxation.
Hosts John and Jenny couldn't have been more helpful and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this escape from the bustle of everyday life more highly.
