In October 2022, my wife and I embarked on a one week Queensland Outback tour, with 3 nights in Longreach and 2 nights in Winton. Travel to and from Longreach was on the Spirit of the Outback train and while in Longreach and Winton we were part of an Aussie Outback Tours coach tour. Our two night accommodation in Winton was the Boulder Opal Motor Inn in Elderslie St and well located, being just 6 minutes walk to the Waltzing Matilda Centre and 8 minutes walk to the North Gregory Hotel, in the main centre of town, both also in Elderslie St. Highlights of our Winton leg of our journey included visits to the Waltzing Matilda Centre; the Australian Age of Dinosaurs; the Dinosaur Stampede; Carisbrooke Station incorporating the famed “Three Outback Sisters” landform; Arno’s Wall and the Willie Mar Garden Project. The Boulder Opal Motor Inn proved to be the ideal base for this touring. It’s a very decent motel complex boasting very roomy and clean and tidy motel units with a comfortable bed, adequate bathroom facilities and basic but purposeful furnishings. There is also a small bar fridge provided. All our meals (two breakfasts and one evening meal) were had as a group in the Motor Inn’s pleasant dining room, adjacent to the reception office. Our meals were very satisfactory with a good buffet breakfast of hot and cold breakfast items and our farewell dinner organised by the managers ( the former ones) was a real memorable and enjoyable occasion with pre dinner drinks (the place is licensed), a main course of roast meat and vegetables with a lamb’s shank thrown in and a simple jelly based dessert. The managers went out of their way and expressed their fine hospitality throughout our Dinner and our stay. Nice features of the complex include a swimming pool (our group was too busy touring to avail ourselves of this facility) an expansive layout of the many motel rooms skirting an enormous open courtyard with generous grassy areas alongside wide concrete driveways. This courtyard was very suitable for coach parking. Our room was enhanced by exposed brick interior walls, a feature that was also apparent in the reception office and dining room. Another good feature is the pleasing outside landscaped area with tables and chairs, adjacent to the swimming pool and spilling out from the dining room where we were able to enjoy our drinks. The reception area is enhanced by its rustic appearance adorned with its classic corrugated iron-cladded customer counter. Boulder Opal Motor Inn more than suited our needs for our two days in Winton and we would recommend the place to anyone looking for an overnight or two in their outback travels.

Stayed recently for 3 nights. New managers are ensuring that Motels previous reputation is no longer. They are making every effort to make guests welcome. Rooms are clean and tidy, lawns mowed and pool clean. Their cooks due back from holiday soon but nothing wrong with the meals. Good luck in your new venture.

OMG we stayed last month as we had previously stayed here two years ago. Hoping we where greeted by the most exceptional guests Helen and Cam. They where an amazing couple. Sadly they had moved on and our stay here was below average. Rude managers upon our recent visit. What an absolute shame. Won’t be back. Very disappointed.

I recently booked into this motel and had one of the worst experiences in my many years of travel. Arrived for check-in 5 mins earlier than 2pm and was rudely told by staff (who I think was the owner).. oh you are a bit early. By the way there was nobody else around to check-in just me. Then this same person, with a glass of wine in hand observed us very closely while we drove to our room as if we were school children. We parked the car sideways so we could get our very elderly mother out of the car with minimal steps to the motel room. Was then told angrily by staff to move the car because it was a hazard. No problem but the manner I was spoken to was disgraceful. 1hr later was sitting outside the room and was yelled at approximately 50meters away by the same person "come over here I need to speak to you". "Come here and step into my office I need to speak with you". Was like a rude principal speaking to a student. Asked for money back and immediately left. Never to return and would never recommend this place.

The most positive comment I can make is the current management are leaving at the end of November as in their words they have had enough of the outback. Not great for promoting the tourism of Winton. Stayed here as part of a tour group for 2 nights. On arrival the female manager rudely insulted two of our party for not smiling and the other for leaving early which was highly inconvenient as breakfast would have to be brought to their rooms. Rooms are ok. Not great the room I had the fridge did not work and was leaking water. The room next door was occupied by the tour guide and I could hear every word he spoke on the phone . Wifi and phone coverage non existent unless with Telstra The second night we had dinner at the motel and it was delicious as was the breakfast both days, however the rude manager informed us at 7pm the bar was closing as they ( the management had been working for 13 hours.) What a joke. A couple of our group tried to buy a glass of wine and were turned away at 7.15 I understand the motel has new owners and I hope they carefully consider who they get to manage the property. Winton is a great outback country town worthy of a couple of days stay.

Our room….20…… was clean, quiet and comfortable and a very fair price. We had a queen sized bed with a single also. There is no cooking facilities or sink, but there is a small fridge and a desk and some chairs. There was undercover parking and a small pool and a guest laundry. They have a restaurant for dinners and we had a nice breakfast brought to our room.

This motel delivered on everything they advertised. Clean, quiet rooms. Modern, good beds, wiifii that worked. Room service meal was excellent. We moved here from a not very good motel down the street. Yes it cost more but was value for money for an extra $30. Well worth it.

We stayed at this motel for one night travelling with our dog. We were informed that a $150 fully refundable deposit was required to cover cleaning costs if the room was determined to be unclean after the stay. When i asked what would constitute the deposit not being refunded i was told if my dog urinated on the carpet. As i knew this would not occur I was happy to book. When we left the following morning we checked the floor and did not see any dog hair or other evidence there had been a dog in the room. Our dog stayed on her bed on the tiles section of the room only. When we received only $100 refund we phoned and queried this with Riley (the manager) who said the cleaner found a dog hair. When we stated how unreasonable this was, he laughed and said, "what are you going to F#*@ing do about it?". He was sarcastic and rude and completely unprofessional. We spoke again the following day and he informed us that the $50 they took was what they charge to all pet owners. We were not informed of this or made aware of this at the time of booking. We were not asked to sign anything stating these charges. This complete lack of transparency to this charge is why i have been compelled to write a review warning other unsuspecting pet travellers out there to be very aware of this hidden charge. Also advertised Wifi did not work.

We got one of the last rooms, which was clean and tidy. Small table outside and a nice breeze in the afternoon to enjoy the end of day. Close to town if you want to walk. Friendly staff and very quiet.
