Detailed Reviews
We have been to these cottages before and were looking forward to returning as we really enjoyed our stay last time.
We stayed at one of the creek-side cottages that overlook the water. The focus of the setting is the lovely bushland and gardens that surround the cottage, so you spend a lot of the time out on the deck. The hosts really value their guest’s privacy, so you generally won’t see them unless you approach them. When you do, they try to be as helpful and accommodating as possible.
The website is very clear on what to expect when you get there. The cottages are a simple affair and have basic cooking facilities (BBQ and microwave) which is fine for a basic meal but if you are considering something a bit different and dining at the facilities at the cottages then make sure you book it before you come. While the cottages are only 10-15 minutes from Ravenshoe only basic supplies can be purchased there (Tableland locals will shop at Atherton which is an hour’s drive away (the IGA is worth a look by the way)). We like to chill so a BBQ or cheese platter is just fine, though we have eaten at the dining facilities. The food is good quality and many of the items are made from scratch. We usually shop in Atherton on the way to the cottages and are stocked with yummy cheeses and nibbles. That way we are set up for a fuss free relaxing stay.
At Chilverton you are paying for the solitude and peaceful aspect with the ability to have your dogs with you. The cottages are clean, and the bed is big and comfortable but to be honest we spent most of our time on the deck. Having a dog run and lots of paths around the property means that you can walk your pupper and have a lot for both of you to explore. The hosts can even dog sit for you if you ask to travel solo during the day. Note: Herberton Historic Village is truly dog friendly so you can take your dog with you to explore there.

My husband and I stayed in the Rosella Cottage for two nights with our dog, Red. The cottage is right by the river and it’s very peaceful sitting on the verandah watching the wildlife. The cottage itself is quite comfortable with a big, cosy bed, fireplace and big bathtub. The grounds are lovely to walk around and Red enjoyed the dog park. While we were there we also ate dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. The food prices may seem expensive but it’s totally worth it for what you get. Gwen makes absolutely everything from scratch and it’s all delicious. As vegans we sometimes struggle to find good food but Gwen did an amazing job. Just remember to order your meals when you book because they need advance notice to shop for the ingredients. We would definitely stay at Chilverton Cottages again.

We stayed with our blue heeler, over a weekend and added in a hot rock massage and dinner in the restaurant - this is the most dog focussed place ever! Gwen and Bruce are generous hosts who present an immaculate property that provides a peaceful paradise, with private accommodation, an onsite restaurant and games room, a dedicated dog off-leash area, abundant nature and walks. A highlight was our dinner (dog friendly, with a 3 course meal for the pup!) where Gwen provided a wonderful meal. Everything is home made from scratch and uses local produce; the creme brulee was a highlight! Our cabin was cosy, warm and peaceful and it was great to be able to have a relaxing massage on site in the day spa. Totally recommend this property and its wonderful hosts if you are looking for a dog-friendly, peaceful, beautiful private retreat with wonderful food also available. Thanks Gwen and Bruce, we will be back!

We may of had higher expectation seeing we paid over 300 for the room and 35 each on top for breakfast.
They are prefabricate building ok in layout bed, sheets, pillows and towels are of high quality but it stops there the veranda had a great view of the pond seen plenty of turtles bird life is plentiful and you can bring your dog the lady we met was friendly.
For our experience the place was a bit dingy the lounge could not seat to adults nor could you stretch out on it the chairs and lounge outside were timber no cushions it was a shame in the cool of the afternoon you could not stretch out, we choose to bring our own bbq food which was great but it took 30 minutes to clean all the old fat and carbon from the bbq, the only think in the fridge was a jug of water no milk they did have pod coffee machine but only 2 pods there was a free bottle of port the brochure said but it was pour into a label less glass jar we did not touch it.
We paid 35 each for a breakfast which consisted of an omelette 1 bit of bacon 3 little sausage and a home made hash brown we were not asked how we would like our eggs not offered juice (had to ask and only apple out of the shop) coffee
Later that day we met friends in Port Douglas and they had poached eggs and avocado small for 15 ???
Nice peaceful place but over priced

We are sorry that you feel you had a bad time. We felt that you were not happy on arrival. It was explained very well to you that food does need to be ordered as we are a small outfit and only get food supplies in when it is ordered. It also states on our sites that bookings and orders are essential. You asked for your menu choices the afternoon before your arrival which does not give us time to source supplies. You asked for breakfast via email on the day that you arrived and so we could only offer you what we had which did consist of homemade beans, homemade bread and butter, sausages, bacon and an omelette with bottomless coffee. When you were asked if you needed anything at the cottage you replied that you had everything that you needed. I do not believe that it took you 30 minutes to clean the bbq as they are attended to when people leave. We make the port ourselves and transfer it into bottles not a jar. These are cleansed after every departure. We are sorry that you thought that the Millstream River is a pond and not sure that you enjoyed the aspect of anything that we offer here. Maybe you would have been better off to stay with your friends and your fur kid in Port Douglas as you seem to have a lot of negative things to say in regard to our property and buildings that we take a lot of pride in keeping.

If you want to take your fur baby with you on a holiday, staying in a nice location then this is the place for you. Pets are well catered for and welcomed. We stayed in the Lumholtz apartment which is quite roomy for us and our large shepherd. The apartment had everything - BBQ, coffee machine, soft towels, comfy bed and lounge and even a day bed. The fenced grassy yard with an outdoor setting also added a nice touch. The property itself is well maintained, with many trails to follow along the river and in the forest. We enjoyed watching the birdlife while sipping a drink on the restaurant veranda before sitting down to a 3 course home-cooked meal. The owners are only too happy to make your stay enjoyable. The location is easy driving to many tourist attractions.

Chilverton Cottages was an unexpected and serendipitous find. Set in the beautiful Atherton Tablelands is a lovely Pet friendly hideaway. Our cabin was directly opposite the River and we were fortuitous to have 3 sightings of god cute and elusive Platypus plus turtles. Our cabin was spotless and we wanted for nothing. Sakari (Our Siberian Husky) was spoilt immensely with her own 3 course meals at Dinner, served in the Restaurant no less. My Husband and I were also overwhelmed with Gwen’s hospitality and warm personality. This lady is a Wonderful Cook (The food at the Restaurant was excellent but now I am on a diet, Desserts are rare on my menu, but I did indulge). Also, if you enjoy a nice wine, explore the cellar. It is unique and you will not find these wines at “Dan Murphy’s”. If you have time, indulge in a massage, you will not regret it. Our stay was too short but we will be back. The Atherton Tablelands and Chilverton Cottages have so many hidden treasures.

Stunning property, friendly hosts and not just dog friendly but dog encouraged.
We took our two dogs up for 2 nights and stayed in the Rosella Cabin overlooking the river. This is our 2nd visit.
There is so much for the dogs to do from exploring the rainforest tracks with bridges over the creeks, watching turtles, water dragons, birds and for us a Platypus playing in the water or walking the beautiful green open areas on the property.
There is a doggie park for some offleash time.
The dogs are allowed inside the cabin and enjoyed their own 3 course puppy meal home made by Gwen and slept comfortably and cosy infront of the fireplace.
Pet sitting is also available if you need.
For the humans, we also loved exploring the property, talking with the lovely host Gwen, enjoying our Breakfast and BBQ food packs which we opted for however there is a restaurant on site.
There is a day spa on site and we were lucky enough to be able to take advantage of a relaxing massage.
The accommodation on the river is very private with no close neighbours and for someone who struggles to sit still I found myself on the balcony watching the river, wildlife and listening to the rainforest sounds for hours.
Book ahead for any meals (everything is made fresh) or Day Spa treatments.
Chilverton holds a special place in our hearts and we will return for a true Dog Friendly Holiday.

A wonderful tranquil weekend from the moment we arrived. No Wifi and no phone reception - Heaven. We were met on arrival by Gwen who made us and our fur babies very welcome and comfortable and the cottage was immaculate and had everything we needed. Puppies joined us for dinner with their own set 3 course meal and again for our massage which was interesting to say the least - well done Gwen for working so well around them - you can fit a human and two pups on one massage table! can't wait to return.

What a simply wonderful and tranquil place to rest and unwind . One of the best places we have ever stayed.
The Hosts are genuine lovely people and very accomdating . The restaurant offers a wide variety of meals and rest assured , Gwen can certainly whip up a storm your taste buds will thank you for....
The climate is cool and inviting , with so much wildlife to view and enjoy, from Parrots / Birdlife of all kinds and colours to tree kangaroo's and the resident bush turkeys , the rainforest holds many surprises .
Their convenient location was a great stepping stone into all the tablelands attractions and activities only being a short car trip away.
We can't wait for our 2023 holiday to come around again and spend another 8 nights at this wonderful place.
Thank you so much
Richard & Boio

Wanting two days of rest and relaxation, I booked and paid for accommodation, breakfast and a massage. The property has lovely gardens and is not far from Ravenshoe.
As I approached the cottage, I noticed an odour that smelt like animal (possum?) urine around the front verandah. Inside, the cottage was functional and reasonably equipped, albeit needing some cleaning in the corners. However, the smell I had noticed earlier permeated the property all night.
Breakfast was left in the fridge; fruit, juice, butter, jam, yoghurt, with a hard doughy loaf of bread on the counter. Unfortunately the pillows were a choice of either hard or lumpy.
When I woke early in the morning the unpleasant odour was still very strong and was making me nauseous. I decided that I could not abide it for a second night, so I packed up and went to the office to advise there was an odour problem and I was unable to stay. I offered to pay for the second night, but requested a refund for three breakfasts (they had charged me twice) and the unused massage.
The female owner was very unpleasant. She demanded that I returned to the cottage with her to prove there was no odour. I refused, explaining the smell made me nauseous, and I left.
The subsequent email correspondence between the owner and I has been quite extraordinary. I have received a long rant denying the smell existed, suggesting it was my own clothes that smelt, making unpleasant personal comments about me and advising “if I would like to take further action (she) would put this matter into the hands of our legal team”.
Unsurprisingly, I have also not received the requested refund for services not provided.
My advice to future patrons is not to complain about genuine problems or issues, to avoid being threatened or abused by the owner. You certainly won’t be treated with courtesy.
