We had a package that included a tour to the Great Barrier Reef and a rainforest tour.
Our accommodations were wonderful. I don’t like bugs/creepy crawlers etc but they are to be expected in the rainforest. The lodge provides bug spray as well as sunscreen for their guests. They were extremely accommodating to our requests and questions.

One thing to note is you must expect access to cabins are along some challenging pathways. You can however get a ride from the front desk in the golf cart if required.

The Great Barrier Reef excursion was fantastic. The tour of the rainforest was amazing and done by a gentleman named Alf. He took us to places that most tours don’t go. The lunch packed by the lodge was scrumptious and plentiful including wine/beer, water, soft drinks. Upon our return we had tea served by Jess, one of our favorite servers. She is terrific.
Breakfast is both a buffet and if desired a la carte. There was a fantastic variety on the buffet so we never had anything a la carte. Love those flat whites!!

The only downside is the menu for dinner lacked variety and the food tried too hard to be “fancy”. It was challenging to eat because too many differing flavors were being presented in each dish.

We only lunched at the bar which has a good little menu. Skinny fries are tasty!

In short, great accommodations and friendly helpful staff.

Dear 63mimi Thank you for taking the time to share your review - we're delighted that overall you enjoyed your stay at the lodge, the friendly service and your experience of Queensland's Far North. Exploration of not one, but two World Heritage-listed natural wonders with a knowledgeable local guide is a must-do while in the region! We're so pleased we could add to your enjoyment of the day with Alf with a delicious packed picnic. Our Executive Chef relishes the chance to showcase a broad range of produce across breakfast, lunch and dinner; the more casual-style lunch menu which you mention is also available at dinner (apologies if that wasn't apparent) - fries are always a good idea! We look forward to welcoming you back to our part of the rainforest one day. Best wishes on behalf of the team, Ali Richards

We spent 26 days touring New Zealand and Australia and Silky Oak Lodge was the highlight of our trip. Ensconced in the Daintree rain forest, the lodge resembled an overnight camp for adults with individual cabins. However, the similarities end there. The lodge was elegant with each cabin having beautiful hardwood flooring, a very modern bathroom with a stall shower and Jacuzzi tub, individual air conditioning, and a veranda with a great view. It was as nice as any 5 star Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons that we have stayed in.
The registration area was open air with the adjoining dining room. Breakfast is included in a very relaxed atmosphere overlooking the river in the same open environment, either a la carte or buffet. Dinner was a la carte and served in the same location. The chef was so creative, blending flavors that we had never thought of. There was also an adequate wine list.
The service was first-rate. Everyone was friendly and helpful.
There was a beautiful natural pool with both shade and sun. There was also a free do-it-yourself laundry.
Highly recoomend

Arrived in torrential rain (very atmospheric!). The rooms are exquisite but no TV, only wifi. At first you panic about no TV, but actually we didn't miss it at all. We did the rain forest walk with Erin, who was fantastic and really informative about the flora and fauna. Sadly it was too wet for us to swim or kayak in the river but we enjoyed the pool. The restaurant and bar areas are gorgeous. Breakfast was ok; Arthur the waiter was particularly attentive but we found the dinner menu just too fussy and the bar menu was very limited if you just wanted a casual meal. One morning there was no water in the room (ironic considering it was raining non stop) but Sonia the GM was very hands-on and sorted things out quickly. The turn down service in the evenings was a nice touch. Facilities include a laundry which was essential to dry off each evening. Our second time at Silky Oaks, loved it then, still love it now. Good luck with the renovations. Until next time!

Having read the marketing and really enjoyed Southern Ocean Lodge we had great expectations for our 3 night stay at Silky Oaks. The detail and quality of bedding, furnishings, the little extras everywhere etc were spot on. The rooms are small, to have two cases for ready access meant one was on the day bed hence one could sit in a chair and one on the bed!
To use the very narrow balcony with a hammock stretched across it, meant a person sat at each end and the hammock between you.
The main lodge was where we had to go to sit and play any board games or read.
At southern Ocean Lodge, drinks hour before dinner and the manager was always there playing host, getting guests together and talking. The quality of drinks was good and the nibbles excellent. At Silky Oaks, the manager never appeared, the quality of wine was poor (equivalent standard of a suburban cafe) and the nibbles ie nuts or edamame, you had to question what is going on. The wine list appeared to be the work of a good sales rep from Negotiant distributors, not someone from the lodge who knew anything about wine. When it comes to food, the breakfast could be described as acceptable, our last morning at 8.30 am, there was no cereal bowls, no side plates, no butter, no yogurt , no bread for toast , oh goodness what is going on!
The standard of the 3 evening meals we scored 5, 5 and 7 out of 10.
It came over as everything had been downgraded to a strict budget. You either charge and provide good quality or downgrade the charge to match the quality.
On the positive, the staff were lovely, tried hard and obliging.
The day spa was excellent.
As you can gather we did not believe Silky Oaks delivered anywhere close to value for money.

Response from Baillie Lodges, Marketing at Silky Oaks Lodge
Responded 19 June 2022
Dear Craig Thank you for your review. We appreciate the elements you’ve praised such as the friendliness of our staff, the quality of the Healing Waters Spa and the comfort of your suite – sweet dreams are pretty much guaranteed when tucked up in a Baillie Bed! Having reopened on the eve of Christmas last year, the lodge is still in the early days of operation and many aspects of the guest experience continue to be refined. Your feedback is welcomed to help guide us on what’s working and what’s not… While we understand the inclination to reference your prior experience within the Baillie Lodges collection, although complementary to each other, each property is unique and it’s not a matter of comparing apples with apples – in this case, it’s more an apple with a rambutan. Silky Oaks Lodge is a significantly larger property than Southern Ocean Lodge and generally more ‘accessible’ to a wider array of travellers – from that viewpoint alone the guest experience is naturally going to be different. As mentioned in your Nu Nu restaurant review, in the wake of the pandemic there is an industry wide shortage of staff and unfortunately we are not immune in our own Treehouse Restaurant. Even so, your comments regarding the dining experience are disconcerting and we’ve taken them quickly on board. Suite categories range from the lead-in Rainforest Retreat (in which you stayed), offering fresh new contemporary interiors on its original 42m2 footprint, to the Treehouse Retreat and Riverhouse at 54m2 both with new outdoor bathing decks. There’s also the premium Billabong Suite (100m2) and the Daintree Pavilion - a veritable mini resort over 320m2 - for those guests wanting to splash out on a little extra space. When striving for excellence is our norm, it's regrettable to hear we missed the mark in your opinion. Hopefully we'll have a chance to redeem that impression at some point in the future. Best wishes Team Silky

Was lucky enough to spend 3 night at Silky Oaks celebrating my 50th birthday. Outstanding in every way. The recent renovations absolutely enhance this place and it's stunning location. By far the main lodge is the star of the show with the reception, jungle perch, bar and restaurant all beautiful spaces encapsulating the surrounds perfectly. The rooms were extremely comfortable and a beautiful place to sit back in the hammock, have an outdoor bath/shower or sit on the day bed and read a book. The swimming hols on the river are gorgeous and were pure relief from the hot and humid conditions (an unfortunate byproduct of having my birthday in March). The food and drink offerings were top class with great variety and presentation every time. The staff were always smiling and just added to the overall experience. As a complete package of staff, location, amenities/rooms and a luxury experience we couldn't fault it, would highly recommend to anyone looking to experience luxury travel/destination at it's best! We definitely be back (at a less humid tome of the year).

Dear Lloyd, It was our privilege to host you for your milestone birthday celebration! We're thrilled you and your friends enjoyed yourselves and made the most of all the facilities and experiences to be had - from the comforts of the newly renovated main lodge with its many areas to drink, relax and dine on Chef Mark's fabulous cuisine to taking an invigorating plunge into the Mossman River - the very best antidote to the humidity. That you endorse Silky Oaks as the 'complete package' is a great accolade and one we're hearing from other guests who have recently experienced the new-look property - once you arrive, there's really no need to leave! We hope to welcome you back again soon, Sonya and the Silky Team

We spent three days at this amazing lodge during our Christmas holidays and you feel the exclusivity since you arrive. One person Takes care oí you for the check in while they serve drinks. They explain carefully the map of the place and all the available services. The rooms are beautiful and calm. All your pick up tours and road trips are double checked. You can swim in the river that passes by the hotel. This is one of the nicest things if you are a swimmer. You also have a tenis court in the middle of the Jungle and a small gym. There are also walking trails through the jungle. The dinner is good although if you are traveling with teen agers they might not enjoy it very much. Breakfast is really good and combined with having it with the views at the terrace it feels absolutely great! Definitely a recommended place to stay. Enjoy!

Bungalows are well cleaned and well maintained with the bed a bit too soft.

The restaurant has a fusion oriented menu but heavy on salt. Chef only provides medium rare temperature on beef, but meat was a bit tough.

All staff very friendly and attentive.

On site laundry a big convenience item.

Spa closes too early at 6pm and doesn’t offer deep pressure only light and medium only.

We apologise that the bed was too soft for your liking, and that the fusion-oriented menu at our restaurant was a bit heavy on salt. As for your dining and spa comments, your feedback is valuable to us and we will take it into consideration as we strive to improve the quality of our service. It was a pleasure to welcome you to Silky Oaks Lodge, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future. Until then, Team Silky

Absolutely stunning vista from the restaurant. The refurbishment is just 'wow' factor many times over.

Silky Oaks is the place to go for that very special occasion.

I had a friend visiting from the UK and really wanted to show off that despite being rural we had the standards of top cuisine and hospitality.

I had been a couple of times before to the restaurant and left both times being slightly disappointed. I was sure that with a major refurbishment and a stunning new restaurant that this would not be the case.

On booking, I was advised that a two course lunch would cost $70, which was fine.

My friend and I both ordered the steak on a bed of salad (no other accompaniments were offered). Mine, medium rare, hers, well done. I envisaged a beautifully presented melt-in the mouth steak. What arrived were 3 little roulades on a slither of salad (the steak were the bits in the middle - not the outside) - a serving size that could have easily masqueraded as an entree or diet portion. And what little meat there was I thought mine was overdone for medium rare, till I found that my friend was thinking the opposite with hers and realised that we'd been served wrongly, so we swopped half way through.

Never mind, on to the dessert, a palate cleansing sorbet.

The sorbet arrived. I have to admit, I wondered if one had to have a customised smaller scooping device made that was smaller than the standard ice cream scoop to produce the mini, forlorn blob in the bottom of the dish.

The food, that I did taste was tasty, but I don't agree with paying $70 for a lunch where you are discussing where to grab a bite to eat on leaving.

Since 80% of a sourbet is water and the amount of meat used in both meals would not have even made one steak, I did feel that corners were being cut at the expense of the eating experience.

I know that times have been hard recently so wish to support the hospitality industry locally. The staff there were lovely and attentive and Silky Oaks refurbishment is magnificent. The view from the restaurant is worth every dollar and made up for the lack of food.

I was so disappointed as I so wanted to feel confident in dining there again, as it truly has the potential to be one of the best restaurants in the area. Just serve more food and less hot air.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review. I'm very grateful for your kind praise of the Treehouse Restaurant in general and the excellent service delivered by my team during your dining experience. Naturally, your comments regarding value for money and portion size are concerning and your feedback has been taken on-board with changes immediately implemented. I hope you might consider returning to the lodge dine again soon (and if you do, please let me know personally) so we can more faithfully show the generous spirit of hospitality which underlines our dining philosophy. As a local friend of the lodge, your good word is tremendously valued. Best regards Sonya Boaden, Lodge Manager

The accommodations were quite nice and very clean...no problem there! The issue was with the main dining room. If you wanted bar food you could be served in an air conditioned room, however, if you wanted dinner from their regular menu there was no choice but to dine on an open air porch. The humidity and heat, even with fans, were horrible. Speaking of horrible, fire the chef. The food was odd...flavors mixed in a never before seen manner. Not good. Save your money...go elsewhere.

The lodge is located at the beginning of Daintree, National Park about half an hour and a half from Cairns. It is very idyllic in the rainforest and especially the restaurant offers a great view. The spa, too. Overall, the staff at the lodge are extremely friendly and helpful and really care about their guests. Every request, whether special food requests, or Help center with booking excursions, is processed quickly and super friendly and competent. The staff at the spa are also great. Rooms are properly cleaned and towels are freshly refilled both in the morning and evening. The quality of the restaurant and the chef, who cooks at a high level, should be emphasized. For dinner dinner there is also a matching wine accompaniment included. We were very satisfied overall and can recommend the lodge.

They were recently purchased by the same company that runs other luxury lodges (Longitude 131, Southern Ocean-which was devastated by the fires on Kangaroo Island-so sad)- and is closed for renovations- I don't think they have released details of how the lodge will run when it re-opens- but if it is like the others there will be all inclusive packages- with suggested night stays to enjoy all the activities offered-

They are nocturnal so the latest you are likely to see one is around 6am. They really are very shy creatures who spend most of their time out of sight so you will be truly privileged if you do see the platypus.
