I always enjoy this small outback town, with its caves, historical sites and lush swimming hole. This small, quiet, friendly, family-owned and run hotel motel has clean and comfortable rooms and good simple meals served in a shady beer garden. Tammy and Chad are welcoming and helpful, and Rob cooks good breakfasts.

I stayed here almost exactly 5 years ago and wrote a fairly critical review at the time. I decided to try it again this year and stayed there on two nights, one week apart, when travelling into and returning from a remote camp. It was certainly better than last time, but still, it's an outback pub with a fairly dilapidated old motel attached, and nothing more. The room is very basic but no more or less than any similar remote pub/motel anywhere in rural Queensland. Everything works, mostly, the water pressure is good, the beds are comfortable and the room is well cleaned. And if you just want somewhere to stay for the night, it will be fine. Our air conditioning unit started to make a loud noise during the night which required a trip outside and around to the back of the building to give it a bit of a shake, but otherwise things worked. I'd be happy to stay here again if this was the only option, but will probably look at what else is available next time I pass through.
I'd also be cautious about eating there again. One meal we had was fine, the next was pretty bad. I had a rump steak which came out in two pieces. It was very thin and basically too tough to chew. I tried a couple of mouthfuls but finally spat one out and abandoned it.

You are in the outback in a town with around 200 inhabitants, so you can't expect luxury. And the choice of accommodation is very limited for those who don't want to drive a motorhome. On the other hand, the kangaroos come right up to the house and hundreds of parrots gather screeching on the power lines in front of the hotel in the morning and evening. The rooms are functional, the bed is surprisingly good, but it's better not to look too closely at everything, the meals on offer for dinner (barbecue etc.) are pretty good, the optional breakfast is a greasy calorie bomb, unsuitable for Europeans. The landlord is a real Aussie, clean clothes are considered overrated in the outback. The night sky over Chillagoe is fantastic. You walk out of the house onto the street and look at the Milky Way, which stretches across the sky with billions of lights. For these and other experiences in the area (caves), a short stay in the hotel is definitely justifiable.

Ordered a steak, should be called jerky, thin and dry as a bone accompanied by boiled to death frozen vegetables. Asked for gravy and had to pay extra for 2 spoonfuls!! Disgusting and served by an old crone for princely sum of $28 for strap of see through flesh and gravy with a bad attitude. Do yourself a favour and don't eat in this place. Beers cold and a variety

The pub and motel provides all that is required for a good stay in these hot regions, including clean accommodation, aircon, cold beer and food. Should you be curious enough to know more about your hosts, you'd discover a rich multicultural past. Their kindness in sharing their stories and their famous paella family dish will stay in our memory.

We were a group of 8 friends doing the Savannahlander train trip from Cairns, and were fortunate to stay with Robert at his hotel/motel. He met us in Almaden, and immediately we knew we had struck gold. You could not meet a nicer human being, and his love of his town and the surrounding area (he took us to the Chillagoe Caves) was infectious. He made us feel so welcome, and we had a lot of laughs in his brand new van. The hotel motel is simple, but spotlessly clean, with a comfortable bed (and ensuite). Robert cooked hearty (and gigantic) pub meals. He is a real Australian treasure, and he and his family were the stars of our trip to the Outback. Thank you for making our trip so special!

The rooms are very tidy & clean. Well laid out & close to the dining room. Ample parking adjacent to the rooms.
The meals are exceptional & the Home Cooked Paella is to die for !
The hosts are wonderful people and go out of their way to make one feel welcome. The beer is cold too.
Great covered seating with plenty of tables in the open air area. When there is entertainment it is the place to be, but it is also just great to sit & relax too.
The dining room is well set out & the breakfasts are awesome.
There is a courtesy coach as well.

We ate at the hotel one evening and enjoyed good country food, well cooked. The covered eating area is well presented, and the staff were friendly and attentive. The country pub atmosphere was helped by the photos of rodeos and other pubs in the area on the walls of the bar - very interesting.

The rooms here are basic but clean. We stayed the night as part of the Savannahlander tour. Meals are large and tasty, although there is no vegetarian option. Seating is in a pleasant, covered area. The owners are hard working, lovely people and we wish them well.
