Detailed Reviews

Very old traditional type hotel. The lunch specials were $15 Monday to Friday. Could also order drinks with your lunch which was nice. The food was excellent as was the service. Old style architecture with easy access for wheelchair or if you’re a bit older lovely timber finished. The staff were friendly and came around during lunch to check everything was satisfactory. Highly recommend for lunch.

Adjacent to the Barron Valley Hotel on the main street of Atherton, this café was the first stop in my road trip from Cairns out to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The coffee was wonderful (local White Whale coffee), the staff were friendly and chatty, and my corned beef and sauerkraut toastie was oh so tasty (they have a toastie menu with some really interesting choices & use local Tablelands bread from The Country Crumb). I would stop off here again in a heartbeat.

The food was amazing. A whole grass fed rib eye steak in the Thai beef salad and wonderful fish and chips, all in large sizes, so didn’t need entrees. Service was incredible, table service for drinks and food without being pushy.

We thought we would treat ourselves with a rib on the bone, Atherton grass fed beef. It was tough and about 30percent fat and gristle. The pepper sauce was inedible. At $55 a serve VERY DISAPPOINTED .
When we voiced our dissatisfaction with staff (twice) were told "we will speak to the chef"
It was not the fault of the chef, the beef was not top quality, I would exoect rib on the bone to be 'melt in the mouth'

Well…. Where to start, the accommodation was extremely basic, the taps in the rooms producing a black substance. The owner was rude upon arrival and came out with some racist remarks. Beware of the indigenous people who live in a Forrest opposite the hotel. There are reports of them carrying m’achètes and robbing work boots and laptops. As someone white from the United Kingdom, we were verbally abused by some locals. And we were also refused a refund on the weeks rent including the bond which we paid out for. The vast majority of the place was very run down and the kitchen was very overcrowded! All in all would definitely not recommend to others. The people staying at the hostel said the farm work was horrible and you were treat like a number and slurred and shouted at. Not a pleasant experience to say the least. DO NOT STAY HERE

Stayed here between 2012/2013 while backpacking. Was only meant to stay to do my second visa work but I stayed longer . One of my first memories of the place was of mick showing me around the hotel giving me the history of the place regarding it being a base in ww2 and some family history of the place. Mick was very direct which I appreciate in people. He explained the drinking rules , can only drink at the bar due to his licensing laws. That seemed fair enough to me and I respected that. He helped me get better farm work than the farm working agency who housed me there were offering. I was never out of work. I made friends and met a lot of good people, either backpackers or locals while staying at the hotel. Mick and I got on extremely well and I'm forever grateful for what he and his wife Marie did for me during my time there. Biggest example I can give of how good they were was when I decided to move down to Sydney. Things were not working out at all on the job front. I was really struggling financially and thought I was going to have to cut my trip to Australia short. One day sat in a shared apartment I was in I received a phonecall from mick. He's asked me how things were cos he had heard from people I had made friends with that things weren't working out. I explained my situation and mick randomly asked me for my e mail address . Without questioning this I told him what it was. 5 minutes after the call I received an e mail conformation for a flight up to cairns.i called mick and asked him what this was this all about, he said he didn't want to see me struggle so he paid for a flight for me to come back to the tablelands. He had a job for me to start on the Monday,my own room and a drink a food tab till I got back on my feet to pay it back. In all my life I have never came across such generosity and someone to do so much for me in such little time I had known them. I took the offer and paid him back over time. I can't speak anymore highly of mick and his family for how I was treated during my time in atherton. I will be forever grateful 🙏🏻

This is a beautiful old hotel. We went for dinner after checking their website which said dinner from 5pm. They accepted our booking for 5pm however on arrival we were told that dinner is not til 6pm. A bit disappointing that their website can't be correct. However, with that being said the service was good and the meals were great.

Outstanding eating area and food. My wife had crispy skin barramundi and I grilled lamb cutlets, which I could have almost cut with a butter knife.
Tender and juicy, with salad on the side. Good variety of wines by the glass.

On holidays and staying at Palm Cove. Visited the Barron Valley Hotel on previous holidays and have enjoyed every visit. The Hotel is beautiful! Original Art Deco. Love it!! The staff are very friendly, the food spot on. Oysters were beautifully fresh and really large. The owners are very friendly and explained the history of the hotel. We will be back and we recommend the Barron River to all visiting Atherton.
