Atherton Blue Gum B&B is a home-away-from home, a great place to base yourself. Wake to a chorus of native bird life and enjoy breakfast served on the upper deck. The views are magnificent, looking down on Atherton township which is nestled in an emerald valley. The mist enshrouded mountains, with tropical sunlight glistening on their exposed peaks in the morning, is a delight to behold.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Pleasant - nice and quiet - our first b&b experience.

Booking was nice and easy - all instructions were nice and clear.

We were lucky and had some nice guests who were nice and quiet as their room was beside us and shared a common area. This made our first b&b experience pleasant.

During our trip around Cairns and region for 2 weeks in July, we stayed at Blue Gum from 8-10 July. We really liked the new house that the hosts provided us. We were told that we received an upgrade, but in comparison to our previous stay at Cape Trib Farmstay and Holiday Inn Cairns, per night, this was the most expensive, we paid about AUD140 per night. To get a nice B&B around Atherton, when we saw the B&B at the French restaurant we ate in Yunggaburra, Blue Gum has the best offer. It was our honeymoon, and fortunately we were the only couple in the house, it was good for the hosts to think about that. There were 3 other rooms and our room was facing the small pool. The house has a magnificent view overlooking Atherton, that was a plus and we had lovely breakfasts at the balcony. We also came across some wallabies and had to be careful while driving back from dinners up to the house not to knock down a wallaby. The housekeeping staff were very discreet and we barely heard them, as we were up after 10am during the 2 mornings. Breakfast was sufficiently provided with muesli, cornflakes, different types of bread (but frozen), etc. But if you prefer a hearty breakfast with eggs, bacon or ham, that's not included, and shopping can be done at Atherton downtown otherwise. Atherton downtown is very quiet in the evenings, but during the day, the town is bustling. For dinners, we were recommended to go outside Atherton town, at Yunggaburra, there were 2 lovely restaurants, 1 French, the other Italian, can't remember both names but there are not too many recommended restaurants around there. I prefer the Italian, not only price was great, it was cozier, relaxed ambience, many choices in the menu and also the choice of portions available. In all, we had a lovely stay at Atherton Blue Gum.

We spent two nights here, so had a full day to explore the area. Helen, our host, really could not have been more helpful and gave us plenty of useful information which we took advantage of. This meant we made full use of our time in this lovely area - even watching wild platypus. Would thoroughly recommend the brilliant open air museum and the 'waterfall circuit'. Simple but clean accommodation which we would not hesitate to recommend.

Called the reception over 5 times without an answer to then have them all declined. So was then denied a room after paying in advance. No compensation given. Was told to simply contact the booking agency and that it was now our problem to get a complete refund although there were vacant rooms as could be seen. Staff not willing to assist but rather told us to leave the premises. Would not recommend.

You arrived at 8pm which is OK as we have key dispensers, but we close bookings at 6pm to allow staff to go home to their families, you booked well after 6 pm there were no staff on site. You booked through a third party so they held your money, hence you needed to contact them to get a full refund as we didn't have your money. What is the problem as you received a full refund which is compensation. You didn't tell the full story as your 5 calls were all well after business hours. Have a nice day. cheers.

Stayed for two nights and woken at 6.45am on a Sunday and 7am on Monday by persistently barking dog right outside window. Dog not owned by owner and instead is owned by tenant upstairs so when the owner was called she said she couldn’t do anything and the dog didn’t like her. In fact she said she started it barking on the Sunday (why???). Said she would speak to tenant but nothing happened. Understand this is a regular thing - and no refund or discount offered. Very very poor.
Additionally room 2 toilet didn’t flush properly and ants on floor.

Horrifying !!! Do not book this place unless u like rats ! Fell out of man hole & terrified friend that was staying in that room. Place is filthy, uncomfortable bed. Avoid this place at all costs !! Much better places nearby. Videos shows rat running sling windows sill & in Venetian blind.

The Cancellation policy for up to 1 day before scheduled arrival is 30%. I accept that I made a mistake on Feb 11th 2019 when booking our July holiday. I rang the B& B within 30 minutes to notify them that we would not be requiring two rooms but have been informed the policy is not negotiable and that I will have $170 deducted from our account presumably in July 2019.

You haven't told the whole story, we said we will not debit anything at this time which we haven't. You are staying somewhere else very close and we said that if you wanted to re schedule, you can use this cancellation fee towards another date/booking with us. You're correct, you did make a mistake, please don't blame us and tell the world, the cancellation policy is very clear. You haven't stayed with us at this point why are you using this forum....??

From the minute I spoke to John on the phone I was happy to book - he was very helpful. We had the pademelon suite - two rooms with interconnecting ensuite. It was great for us as a family with three kids. Also very private. House and furniture was lovely and place was extremely clean. The pool looked nice though we didn't have time to use it. The breakfast was continental - toast, jam, cereal, tea, coffee and orange juice. Quite adequate. Hosts were as friendly in person as on the phone. John gave us good advice on local sights. Great shared kitchen if you wanted to cook your own food too. I would recommend to others and would stay again.

We have just spent two nights here. The room was simple but comfortable, everything clean. The breakfasts were fine. The thing that made it so special for us were Helen and John. They were so welcoming, and all the information that they gave us, especially John, was invaluable. We got much more out of our stay, and subsequent journey to the coast, than we would other wise have done.
If you are wanting 5 star accommodation and service, this may not be for you. If you want a friendly family atmosphere, with a couple who bend over backwards to help make your stay enjoyable, this is the place

I booked a room at their seperate unit (The Summit) when we arrived we were told that they had let it out to The Lions club , (who had a convention on) and they put us in a small room in the main house.
Well this room came equiped with a 12" TV, a kettle, fridge, bed and not much else.
It was dark and dingy, no ac, under the main house (owner & 8 kids running around from anout 6 am).
Our booking included breakfast (but a cooked one was an extra $10, and it had to be taken before 7:45,) pay by card (that'll be and extra 2%), all in all it was a very poor offer, we stayed 2 nights and the room was not serviced. They tried to charge us $160 per night, we only paid $150 BUT and a big BUT it was only worth $75.
Stay here at your own risk, a booking does not guarantee the right room.

We understand your disappointment, especially being Welsh and arriving on the same day that Wales was playing in the Semi of the World Cup in NZ that you had just attended in NZ. You were so excited. To see them lose in that way and losing their magnificent Captain - SW. You were getting ready to return to NZ to see them in the final, you were heart broken, we understand. We run a small family business of 3 properties and we do the lot, cleaning/managing etc. We're always devastated when we don't deliver but we know we can't please everyone and when a major booking happens in a small mcountry town, we have to do whats right for our family. If only you had told us immediately that there was a problem, we would have made sure that we found something else for you to your satisfaction. Telling us as you leave our premises or on sites such as this, does not fix the problem for you which we could have done. We always try to do our best we pride ourselves on the personal touch.
