Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I was attending a yoga retreat over 3 days. This is a wonderful venue to host a yoga retreat as all the props, mats etc.. are provided by the establishment. The rooms were beautiful and so authentically Japanese, the bath tub was devine! I had a shiatsu massage, the masseuse was Japanese and it was so blissful. The meals (breakfast, afternoon tea, lunch and dinner) were Japanese and absolutely delicious. All the staff (mainly Japanese) were just wonderful, helpful, respectful, attentive and so pleasant to deal with. I felt, it was a real Japanese experience. I am planning to return next year for another yoga retreat.

The staff are very attentive and approachable, making the stay as relaxing and welcoming as possible. They even texted to alert myself the tyres on my car was flat. Their attention to detail and care is beyond anything a typical hotel staff member would provide. The retreat was a very worth while stay for a short staycay. A two hour drive from Eastern Suburbs and we felt like we were in Japan itself. The food was also delicious. The room layout is very well through out, plenty of power points in convenient locations. We were very impressed! Definitely recommend for friends to visit for a place to unwind and get away from it all. There is wifi but it isn't the strongest connection and that is probably for the best. We had an unplugged staycay.

Our friends and I, have been to Jamieson retreat many a times, each visit has been different experience to the others before. Why is that so? Jamieson is a place and located in high country, but one ought to immerse our senses to the elements that become us by the time you say goodbye. Yet it never a goodbye, because instinctively you seek to be back, to be in your elements. Let’s romance the physical dimension, the breezy clean freshness that sweeps your face, is invigorating and breath easy. The water in the backdrop of Fred and Angie’s residence, squishing sounds and cascading water streams on the pebbles and rocks, is a cool treat to our bodies. The exquisite birds of various shades of colors, received us with sweet sounds, tweeting and chirping on our arrival, and yet they shared our company throughout our stay under the luscious green oak trees. Fred, with his local knowledge, was kind enough to walk us over the rolling hills and scrubs, it’s breathtaking to walk into nature to know, this is it, that we want to experience. The raising sun in the morning and the sunset in the evening, was so enticing, we spread sheets on the lawn and gazed into the night of stars, it was magic. Lastly the space was phenomenal, knowing that we were all in this awesome place together, we lived to be what it ought to be for us in this trips.

We stayed at this place for 2 nights and we were fortunate enough to be there when they served the Omakase dinner. Very delicious meal. Breakfast was delightful with excellent service. They provide spa services and massage my husband had was very good as was the facial. The service is amazing. I would highly recommend a visit.

I went to a beautiful yoga retreat at Shizuka Ryokan. From the moment you walk down the garden path and take in the natural bush surroundings you start to feel relaxed. You are welcomed with lovely Japanese hospitality, artifacts, food and traditional inn style rooms. The yoga teacher Renee was fantastic. Classes were varied and supported all levels, my favourites were the morning yoga overlooking the bushland and a relaxing sound meditation. I left smiling, refreshed and calm.

My husband and I went to this place last January and we loved it. Beddings seem clean and futon bed was comfortable. Overnight stay was quite refreshing. However on our second visit this week, loud banging sounds kept us awake whole night plus bed was quite uncomfortable. I told the staff and I was told it was a plumbing issue. So basically I paid 750 for one night just to keep us awake.

Response from Shizuka Ryokan, Owner at Shizuka Ryokan Japanese Country Spa Retreat
Responded 19 Apr 2022
Hi Carmina, once again, thank you for bringing this to our attention. As Catherine explained while you were here, we did unfortunately have some plumbing issues which created noise in the water pipes. After having a plumber here for three days in a row we have now identified and rectified the cause of the problem and we haven't had any further complaints. We hope that you enjoyed the complimentary Shiatsu that you had while you were here and if there's anything further we can do for you, please get in touch. Kind regards. Gurudaya

Wonderful two days at a Japanese inn, with authentically Japanese food. My 8-tatami room had a small contemplative garden and was ideal for either an afternoon reading or a nap. Quite lovely! Immaculately clean! A highlight was watching the kookaburra having his breakfast sashimi. Toiletries were perfect for my requirements. Loved the shiatsu massage as a first-timer for that experience.

Lovely location in quiet town...nice gardens leading to building itself. Staff are friendly and helpful...really great! All the food was excellent with nice sake choices to match. Building and rooms are quite small and minimal but that's really part of the experience. Had a shiatsu massage: highly recommended. Only a couple of minor improvements that are really maintenance: update the wicker furniture in room as noisy...and needs a freshen up for wood and paint. Highly recommended!

Wasn’t able to travel to Japan this year so decided to try Shizuka Ryokan instead. Very authentic experience and didn’t feel kitschy at all. There’s no TV which I found to be a nice touch. Bathtub was good size and room very clean. Breakfast was delicious and very typical of Japan. Was especially impressed with the service and we were well looked after by Catherine and Shinya. We also had some last-minute changes to our reservation and they were very understanding and accommodating which was very much appreciated.

This place is consistently booked out as it’s a boutique accommodation with only 6 Japanese style bed rooms. I managed to see two nights availability and immediately booked for our 21 anniversary. Also went all out and booked the package (2 massage and a dinner) in addition to just having the room only. No regrets splurging! Well worth every penny. Very authentic Japanese feel, the waitresses and receptionists are all Japanese, so you think you’re in Japan if you simply stay in the Ryokan. Great warm service, dinner was fantastic. Brings us back to our Japan holidays without having to fly all the way there! The futon beds were surprisingly more comfortable than the ones we slept on in Japan. I wonder why ? Our massage therapists [ Renee and Margie) also did not disappoint us. We thoroughly enjoyed our massages. Thank you, Catherine and team for making our anniversary celebration a memorable one during this COVID period.
