Barry and Kathy were excellent hosts, happily providing everything we needed, including suggestions for hikes and drives in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Barry has lived in the area his whole life and loved to give details of his past, including bringing his cat to Alf Wight's (James Herriot's) veterinary surgery. The furnishings are old and quaint (Barry was an antique... More

Stayed 15/07/16 i was in a group of 5 other cyclists. When we arrived the owner allowed us to wheel our bike through the dining room and through to 'back rooms' to store the bikes. The furniture and general look of the place was out of the 18th century. A cat roamed around the place! The whole place as very... More

St. James House is a fine, grade 2 listed 18th century Georgian Town House, furnished with many fine period antiques. This house is most certainly NOT dilapidated. We do have central heating, it simply never occurred to me that you may want it turned on on a hot July night. If you wanted heat, why didn't you ask? The shower... More

Barry is a good host and very friendly and helpful. The house is lovely, it's full of treasures and my bed was very comfortable. It is a little strange not to be given a front door key but we had no problems. Enjoyed meeting the cat (don't let him out!) and chatting with Barry. Not all rooms are en-suite -... More

I booked months ago as part of birthday pressie for my partner, a day at the races with an over night stay. I couldn't have booked a better place, full of character and very friendly and that's just Barry! A lovely period house reflecting Barry and his life in the antiques world. The bedroom was spacious and had all the... More

Quirky is the keyword here. Barry is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He is very helpful with his knowledge of the local area. This was our 2nd visit as we are racegoers to Thirsk racecourse so it is really located well for visitors to the race course or just for staying around Thirsk. Location is just... More

Lovely spotlessly clean, unusual accommodation. Barry and the two Joannes give you a great welcome and Barry is a mine of information on places to visit. The beds are very comfy and the breakfast is delicious all made to your specific requirements and at the time you request. Would definitely stay again
