We specifically went over to Black Sail today to look at the recent renovations and enjoy a sit down inside ("the common room is left open during the day") and an afternoon cup of tea from the advertised honesty cafe ("We sell tea, coffee and cakes in the afternoons and walkers are welcome to come in and use these facilities....

We walked over Scarth Gap on a pretty windy day. There is an honesty cafe so we had a nice mug of tea before heading back. It's cosy and welcoming. We will definitely book a stay here, perhaps before heading up Pillar.

If you are the sort of person who will take the time and trouble to cycle/walk into Black Sail then you will know exactly what to expect as you would have wanted to stay here ever since you first learn't about it. Of course it is basic, it is supposed to be and long may it remain so! Stepping out...

This is a gem of a hostel which compares favourably with the mountain huts in the Alps. Its remoteness must be unique in England and the fact that it only sleeps 16 adds to its charm. 50 years after my first stay I have visited Black Sail twice in the last few weeks, once alone among strangers and the second...

We booked a four bedded room when we stayed here as we were a group of 3 (oldish) ladies walking part of the Coast to Coast in easy stages and did not know what we were in for! Only one of us had ever stayed at a youth hostel before, and that was 45 years ago when you had to...

The location is a stunning as the photos. Dorms are clean and comfortable, as are the communal areas. Yes, it is a bit cramped, but that's code for 'cosy'. Hearty and tasty catered dinner and breakfast, and good selection of beers. Staff friendly and helpful, but also discrete and keep behind the scenes. Sitting outside under a blanket of stars...

I stayed at YHA Black Sail on a Saturday Night with some friends. The location is stunning. We had beautiful weather and the views from the surrounding peaks are amazing. The hostel is great and the staff were friendly. You know that you are not getting luxury. I had some minor gripes which prevents me giving a 5/5 rating. 1....

I found the dormitory (for men) far too small for the number of people sleeping in it. The eating, kitchen, communal area (all one room) was extremely cramped. The food/meals are completely overpriced and low quality. There is no reasonable place to dry clothes. And yet the prices are going to go up next year by a whopping 16% next...
