Last time around, got a poolside room (1 Queen and one smaller bed) - this time got a room with 2 doubles, on the other side of the corridor. Without the lovely pool view, but in every other way, excellent.
Just would like to comment that the service (from all staff: cleaners, bar staff, and management / admin) was exceptionally helpful and friendly. Last weekend was an exceptionaly busy weekend, with the York Festival, the place was very busy. Service still friendly and fairly prompt.
Location is exceptionally convenient, we could walk to most things.
Fridge, kettle & toaster provided in room were useful.
Recommendations for York: Nguyen's Bakery is the best value lunch in town and has a very wide range. Castle Hotel restaurant pretty good, typical pub food. Imperial Homestead a bit $ but huge servings.
If you are in town for a Festival (which are great) - heritage tours are fantastic and good value. It's a small town and lunch produces huge queues everywhere, so maybe duck into the bakery and get lunch early, to carry with you.
The hotel is quite amazing to behold as I love history. The room was at first glance average but then we noticed all the broken bits and bobs and mold on the bathtub. The balcony had a panel that was broken and with a toddler could have been very dangerous. The chain lock on our door was broken which felt insecure.
Only 2 towels provided despite us saying we had a toddler with us. No one to talk to at reception about these issues as the bar staff and reception are the same and they were too busy.
Had dinner there as the pizza was said to be good. Big mistake. They forgot about us and we had waited an hour. My glass had someone else's lipstick on it. Once we finally got our pizzas they tasted terrible and overloaded with pineapple.
Location is convenient but that is about it. For the price I'd expect better at least the bare minimum but this was just disappointing which is such as shame as we really wanted to like it.
Dismal, luke warm christmas lunch, consisted of 2 slices of cold ham, one small slice of turkey, 4 small pieces of potatoe, 1 small piece of brocolii and a small spoon of corn, served with a miserly amount of gravy. Followed by a very nice and tasty chrismas pudding with custard but again it was barely warm.
When we walked in the room was set up really nicely for our large group, with table decorations, crackers, xmas tree and tinsle. This was complimented by a water station and tea and coffee station. Our meal was served to our tables by the staff, who could have been more appropriately dressed for a restaurant. But oh how dissapointing to be served such a dissapointingly luke warm excuse for a meal.
I drove up from Perth on Saturday afternoon 27th August and went to check into the Castle Hotel with my paid booking confirmation only to be told by a very rude receptionist that they were fully booked and had been for months and I did not have a room at the hotel or anywhere to stay as the town was busy with a cycling event. I was actually in shock as I had paid and received a confirmation and been allocated a room number via the Castle Hotels website, however this was already booked by someone else. When I queried this with the staff member I was told "oh this happens all the time, you should have rung us to make the booking". I was refunded the cost of the room but not the booking fee, even though I had NO BOOKING. I will never book or stay at the Castle Hotel ever again.
Very disappointed
I did feel sorry for the staff as so many people jammed in the room they couldn’t get round to serve people, luckily we are a helpful lot and passed the plates along. Dessert was Christmas pudding which tasted lovely and would have been nice if it was warmer.
All in all very disappointing and I wouldn’t recommend it.
York is a gorgeous little town.
Travelled with 5 x Adults & 3 x Children (aged 4, 4 & 2)
Went to the park on the Avon River. Kids loved the flying fox, the slide, and playing hide and seek. We then walked over the suspension bridge and back again before going to the Castle Hotel for lunch.
Lunch was great. We ordered 2 x Fish & Chips, 2 x Scotch Fillet & Chips, 1 x Steak Sandwiches & Chips, and 3 x kids Nuggets & Chips. The steak sandwich was so yum. It was cooked perfect to bite into. You weren't trying to pull the meat apart in your mouth when you took your bite. It was sooo good.
Customer Service was also amazing. The waitress was bubbly, friendly, very helpful, and great with the kids. We will be back again soon for sure 🥰
For lack of any other options in town we persisted and the food was good. Came out in a timely fashion, generous servings, well priced and tasted good. Pub food done well.
Must say the other staff were good, young guy behind the bar was nice albeit he was copping similar treatment as us. Staff serving the food were also nice.
