Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We went here for a bite to eat last night. Just a steak sandwich and a chicken fillet, both with chips and salad. Staff behind the bar were friendly and helpful. As was the young girl rushing to deliver food, but we had to wait over 1 hour and 20m for this simple food order. Hotel was not busy.

Booked over the phone as I read the reviews here about booking online being more expensive but it actually ended up costing more over the phone compared to what I saw online but I did not have the energy to fight it. The hotel is quite amazing to behold as I love history. The room was at first glance average but then we noticed all the broken bits and bobs and mold on the bathtub. The balcony had a panel that was broken and with a toddler could have been very dangerous. The chain lock on our door was broken which felt insecure. Only 2 towels provided despite us saying we had a toddler with us. No one to talk to at reception about these issues as the bar staff and reception are the same and they were too busy. Had dinner there as the pizza was said to be good. Big mistake. They forgot about us and we had waited an hour. My glass had someone else's lipstick on it. Once we finally got our pizzas they tasted terrible and overloaded with pineapple. Location is convenient but that is about it. For the price I'd expect better at least the bare minimum but this was just disappointing which is such as shame as we really wanted to like it.

We received a very rude welcome from a woman at reception. She told us abruptly that we would have to wait to check in as they were too busy at the bar. After waiting a while, my husband went to the bar to remind her that we were still waiting. She then came over saying she had forgotten about us. She then said that our booking was a scam and that she didn’t have our booking but that she would honour the booking. I showed her the payment and receipt email. She said that it was all scam. Once in the room, I contacted my bank who confirmed that the payment had gone to Castle Hotel. The room was good but I would never go back there.

Not sure who runs this lovely majestic hotel in York but they need to stop doing "Take Away" as it was a complete mess when we first called to put an order in. Was told you have to come down to order take way. Why does the website still say you can call? 2nd - went inside hotel to put in order and then told that menu on website is old......pathetic lazy staff that can't update website. Chose 2 meals off another menu and was then told can't have them due to burner not working!!!! So 40 minutes later we got our take way and it was cold. Meat in steak sandwich was like road kill, just terrible. What a disgrace this lovely old Hotel is now.

As the title states, if you can get past the rudeness of at least one staff member then the food is pretty good. From the moment we arrived an older lady made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome - everything we did was wrong or too much hassle. From ordering drinks to ordering food, standing in the wrong spot, taking to many menus. It was so uncomfortable and a horrible experience. For lack of any other options in town we persisted and the food was good. Came out in a timely fashion, generous servings, well priced and tasted good. Pub food done well. Must say the other staff were good, young guy behind the bar was nice albeit he was copping similar treatment as us. Staff serving the food were also nice.

Don’t book online, we got charged $20 extra per night for booking online. We booked and paid for early in June and then when we got there other people were booking in and had booked over the phone and only paid on the day were charged $20 less per night. There wasn’t just one of them. When I questioned the woman booking us in she just said ‘yeah you shouldn’t book on line, you should ring us’. No offer of a refund, I was so angry, they had our money since June and these other people booked over the phone and didn’t have to pay until arrival and get $20!per night cheaper!

This was my second trip to York (weekend away) this year. We visited for the York Festival. Last time around, got a poolside room (1 Queen and one smaller bed) - this time got a room with 2 doubles, on the other side of the corridor. Without the lovely pool view, but in every other way, excellent. Just would like to comment that the service (from all staff: cleaners, bar staff, and management / admin) was exceptionally helpful and friendly. Last weekend was an exceptionaly busy weekend, with the York Festival, the place was very busy. Service still friendly and fairly prompt. Location is exceptionally convenient, we could walk to most things. Fridge, kettle & toaster provided in room were useful. Recommendations for York: Nguyen's Bakery is the best value lunch in town and has a very wide range. Castle Hotel restaurant pretty good, typical pub food. Imperial Homestead a bit $ but huge servings. If you are in town for a Festival (which are great) - heritage tours are fantastic and good value. It's a small town and lunch produces huge queues everywhere, so maybe duck into the bakery and get lunch early, to carry with you.

Do NOT book via their website I drove up from Perth on Saturday afternoon 27th August and went to check into the Castle Hotel with my paid booking confirmation only to be told by a very rude receptionist that they were fully booked and had been for months and I did not have a room at the hotel or anywhere to stay as the town was busy with a cycling event. I was actually in shock as I had paid and received a confirmation and been allocated a room number via the Castle Hotels website, however this was already booked by someone else. When I queried this with the staff member I was told "oh this happens all the time, you should have rung us to make the booking". I was refunded the cost of the room but not the booking fee, even though I had NO BOOKING. I will never book or stay at the Castle Hotel ever again. Very disappointed

I don’t know what to say a truly awful main course the cauliflower was so overcooked it’s was mush and somehow it was served with a generous helping of cold water. Cold ham small piece of turkey one piece of roast potato and one piece of pumpkin. I did feel sorry for the staff as so many people jammed in the room they couldn’t get round to serve people, luckily we are a helpful lot and passed the plates along. Dessert was Christmas pudding which tasted lovely and would have been nice if it was warmer. All in all very disappointing and I wouldn’t recommend it.
