Marvel at the dramatic rocky headlands, sheltered bays and tall eucalyptus woodlands on Woody Island Nature Reserve- only a 20-minute ferry ride from Esperance. Rich in history, Woody Island is one of 105 islands in the Recherche Archipelago (commonly known as the Bay of Isles) and is the only island open to visitors with overnight accommodation. Woody Island lacks snakes and introduced predators, making it a haven for wildlife such as birds and lizards. Learn about the Island’s history and get close to nature during a guided bushwalk. Come stay with us on Woody Island and take advantage of everything there is to do and relax in nature. We offer both tents and safari huts for our guests, as well as a bar & kiosk with food, drinks, and fishing & snorkelling equipment for hire. Wake up to the sounds of the birds, go for a morning swim or walk, and have a coffee while watching the bay for dolphins.

Just when we thought our family xmas holiday couldn't get any better, we were all given a eco day tour to Woody Island on boxing day. Where do i start!
We left Esperance at 9am.
The tour included seal watching, dolphin sightings and an eagle viewing at different sites some kilometres out at sea. We were warned we may not see all the animals however we must have had the gods on our side because we saw them all & with the dolphins we saw them 3 times!!!
After touring these spots we headed for the day at Woody Island and the approach is stunning.
We took with us loads of supplies, an esky full of food & drinks. We were a group of 13 including toddlers so we had alot of bags etc. The crew looked after loading and off loading all our bags etc & taking them from the ferry up to the restaurant where we were able to set ourselves up for the day.
We were provided morning tea on arrival & a guided walking tour was also provided. You can buy foid & drinks at the restaurant if you want & you can hire goggles & snorkles too. The view is stunning from the laid back restaurant, there are no windows that obstruct your view! There is plenty of seating for groups and families.
We opted for snorkeling and swimming. It was such a magnificent day, the weather was perfect which topped off such a special day.
Rachel was our guide and she was absolutely lovely. The ferry was spacious and is limited to a certain number only. When you do the tour the ferry only goes to the island once per day. The return time from the island back to Esperance was 2pm. The trip back is half the time to getting there because there are no stops on the way.
Overall it was an amazing day that i would happily repeat. It was such a treat and made for the perfect gift. A definite MUST if you are visiting Esperance.

I chose to hold my 60th birthday celebration at Woody Island, a short ferry ride from Esperance on the south east coast of Western Australia.
Gen, the island manager, made sure our group could have the island to ourselves for the weekend.

Unfortunately, the weather looked like it would turn nasty on the Sunday for the trip back, but we were given plenty of notice to make other arrangements if we wanted to, however, we were all keen to go ahead and our guests were all treated to an additional night on ‘Woody’ , so the party carried on for the extra day!

The kiosk provides great simple food with huge servings, and the licensed bar has everything you need.
Woody Island accomodation is fantastic, with something to suit singles, families and those who want a little more luxury. Beds are comfy and the linen and towels of good quality.

You can do as much or as little as you like on Woody Island, it’s such a fabulous spot.

Many thanks to Gen, Les and Murray for looking after us so well. I could not have wished for a better place to hold my birthday celebration.

We have just stayed at this little island paradise for 3 nights and had the most wonderful time. Can’t recommend a visit to Woody highly enough. We stayed in a safari tent which was fab for our family of 5 (although I was a bit jealous of the amazing looking ‘couples only’ tents!) Very well equipped camp kitchen, including 3 communal fridges and plenty of bbq plates. The staff are amazing and a real asset to the whole operation. Trav & Carrie were the managers while we were there, super friendly, efficient, and clearly very hard workers. As were their team. Joe was a stand out - deckhand on the boat and also took the guided walking tour of the island. Such a knowledgeable, passionate young man who clearly loves his home and his job. Made it a special experience to hear personal stories of his own, his Dad and his Grandpa. I had never even heard of Woody Island before travelling to Esperance, so thrilled it popped up in my google search. We’ve made some magic memories here.

Booked an overnight stay some months ago. COVID has made things difficult I am sure, but it was still a surprise to get a phone call 2 days prior to our scheduled arrival to tell us they had cancelled our ferry trip back. The only options offered were stay an extra night and get the ferry back a day later or cancel our stay. No other options were suggested, even though (as we later found out) there is an early morning ferry departure from the island which was running as usual. The person on the phone seemed not to know much. We had to cancel and scramble at short notice to find accommodation for the night in Esperance.

We did the day trip to Woody Island and had a great time. The trip on the boat was comfortable and interesting. There are so many islands/rocks off the Esperance coast that you go past.

We were taken the long way to see the seals and were lucky to see a sea eagle as well, and when we got to the Island, were welcomed with morning tea.

Woody Island was lovely and the view from the cafe was amazing. You get roughly 3 hours there before going back to the mainland. We decided to spend our time snorkeling rather than going on the guided walk.

There are no white sandy beaches like Esperance, but the snorkeling was amazing. So many little and big fish live in the bay. The kids had fun going down down the slides on the pontoon as well.

We spent a long time in the water before heading up for lunch, which was quick and tasty. Then it was time for the ride home. More direct this time but we went past other rocks and the big tankers waiting to go on to port which was interesting. Was a great place to visit.

Peaceful and restful getaway. Very friendly, helpful staff. Rustic accommodation. Nice restaurant - so convenient as alternative to the great camp kitchen! Lovely walks, birdsong, snorkelling, fairy penguins and swims with a friendly seal.

Great view from Safari Hut. The kitchen has most of the stuff you need. We just missed the microwave. The trail was a great exercise before the lunch and offered amazing views. Crystal clear water. Enjoyed our family stay.

Oh Woody Island! What a special island indeed where I truly felt like I was a worlds away. If you plan a visit here, I highly recommend that you stay overnight instead of just doing a daytrip. I was so glad I did and even then I wished I had stayed for more nights. I've seen those who did only daytrip and it's a shame how they’re so rushed and time passed so quick that they didn't have enough time at all to do and see what this island has.

I stayed in a safari tent Conus and I love3x it so much!!! It reminded me of my time in Africa and I believe it's the best tent indeed because WOW THE VIEW! The tent was simple, rustic, clean but oh so comfortable and I slept like a log! :-D The 2 main things I would want to point out: BRING JACKET and WEAR CLOSED SHOES! Nightime was surprisingly cold here even in summer. I was shaking at one point. Wearing closed shoes is not only safer (but don't worry, there's no snake on the island), but it’s more so that your feet would be cleaner and you wouldn't need to keep washing because all parts of the island are sand and dirt. You also wouldn't need to stress about not scooping up any more dirt after you wash...which let me tell you, is almost impossible not to do when you wear sandals like I did LOL I don't know how for the life of me I forgot to change into my shoes. I also loved Skinny Bay and was lucky to have it all to myself for some time. The weather couldn't be better either. The bay was so calm and not windy at all. As with all outdoor stuff, it's true you need to exercise caution and the crew would say the rocks to the bay were steep and advise you to go with someone...but honestly, I was fine all by myself. If you've done lots of hiking or trekking already, you would find it very easy and not steep at all. Slippery of course in some bits near the water, but other than that, easy peasy!

The shared facilities on the island were good and clean enough. You could cook yourself, but you need to buy all ingredients prior to boarding the boat. There's no shop on the island. Or they also sell some simple food at the bar. Towels were provided and there's hot water, but do bring your own soap and shampoo and torch for night time. Kayaking and snorkelling gear could be hired from the bar. I hired the goggles and they're in pretty good condition. The boat ride to the island was easy breezy. The short guided tour of Island Top Walk was also very enjoyable. Our guide (sorry forgot his name) was a handsome and very passionate young guy who really was a good storyteller. And to see those cute carrot-eating skinks...Awwww!

Lastly, I want to commend all the crews, both the boat and island crews. They're all super friendly, professional and helpful and some of them even remember my name :) I will never forget my time at Woody Island. Will be back again one day and stay longer.

Came for two nights but after one day we extended to four nights. This is a fantastic place. Lovely walk around the top of the island, stunning views across to the other islands and Cape le Grande, great snorkeling and fishing. Will definitely be back for a longer stay.
