Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed there for 4 days free camping with friends and loved the place . There was plenty of space as it has just opened up again and our site was only about 30 metres from the water on a gentle grassy slope . There is permanent fire drums , rubbish bins and toilet facilities available but they could have done with a clean . We left money in the envelopes available as we really liked the site and want to make sure it stays
open for everyone to enjoy .

Great place to spend a night or more in the caravan. Beautiful views over the lake. A huge area with lots of sites. Clean toilets and showers available. Lots of bird life to observe. The water was down in the lake when we were there but at other times you could go fishing.

Lovely lake. Plenty of choices for camping locations (to the right when you drive in). Toilets, showers, and bbq areas all free to use. Donation box by the toilet block if you wish to leave some money for your stay to help keep the park clean and free! Plenty of bins for rubbish. Dog friendly (on lead). Beautiful lake, some areas you cannot swim due to algae. Short (5k walk) from campground into Ararat - there is a track to follow from the lake that takes you along the footpath by the hwy.
I think in peak periods it would get quite noisy and be less pleasant. My only negative was that the traffic noise at night was louder than expected, I kept waking up hearing the trucks rumble down the road however perhaps it was just the direction of the wind.

Did you know Green Hill Lake near Ararat is located at this bottom of thi west side of Langi Ghiran Mountain. Thi main word is "ghir" & is a freshwater reptile with a long jaw. People could call a crocodile. They migrate from thi mountain to thi lake everyear to breed, & have quite extensive hunting ranges. Ghirials prey includes, fish, birds,& anything they can catch. They swim, crawl, climb trees & can run fast. They can have 3 leg segments & longer legs. Because if their 2nd nose at thi end of their long jaw they can sound a bit different, and make sonic underwater sounds. I n thi past they evolved with elephants braught here & some species can sound like a trumpet with a shorter elephant trunk like jaw. Elephants set in stone can be found in this mountain. Visiting Wangarileednei Tribe. 28.11.2020. Eastern Australia.

An excellent place to caravan or camp in a restful, scenic location. A wonderful restful stop for travellers who want to get away from the normal places to stop in towns etc. The lake is 6km outside of Ararat and has a walking track back into town. The place has toilets and shower amenities that are old but clean. Best for caravaners, but also good for camping in tents. The lake is spectacular and has areas to swim in. On site bar-b-ques are provided. Bird life is abundent. Have stayed about 6 times already and will stay again. No cost to camp, but a gold coin donation is welcome. Highly recommended.

This is worst camp in Australia due to the unlawful permanent camps. I found syringes lying everywhere. Drunk men and women hovering the toilet facilities, car wrecks abandoned tents and garbage litter everywhere. The bridge is about to fall very unsafe. Wreckless drivers at nights. I would not recommend this place, definitely not for children.

Nice free camp, toilets and showers with warm water. Gets busy in busy periods and good to see security cameras around now as before it was abit wild with people partying and fighting. Now it’s peaceful and quiet definitely back to its old glory

This free camp is very large. Because of drought there was no water in the lake.
There are flushing toilets, hot showers and town water. Great spot. Lots of bird life, great walks all very convenient to Ararat which has lots of attractions and history. $5 per night on an honesty system (Red Box for donations). Local caravan parks start at $36.00. Don't go to Bakery Brewer.

This has to be one of Victoria's best free camping spots anywhere, the location around the lake for vans is superb, the facilities though limited sufficient and the tranquillity second to none.
We stopped here on our recent West to East coast trip the last evening before heading through to Melbourne and were highly impressed by the whole set up, space for vans to stay connected were plenty and all the small tracks in and out of the trees were great.
There are toilets and showers provided by the local shire and there are a couple of water taps for those needing to top up their tanks also, just a few kms from town for supplies and a good fuel outlet across the highway from the entrance into the reserve.
The lake is a haven for wildlife and there are signs that show what can and cant be done and where out on the lake.
