What a great place. I stayed for one night and had breakfast included in the rate. The hosts are great people and very welcoming. The room was clean, the toilet and shower was clean so I couldn’t ask for anymore then that. The breakfast was as good as you can get only thing I can comment on was the coffee was cold. The staff are really nice.
Great place thanks Rob
Cheers Mick

There is nothing worse than spending $175 on a crappy bed in a modern motel and feeling ripped off.

BUT there is nothing better than spending $60 on a bed in an old hotel and getting the bed, two great meals, a couple of beers and a quality bottle of wine in the total price of $150.

The best thing about the Shire Hall Hotel is that they don't over promise but they do deliver. The boss Dale tells you the rooms are just okay, he tells you the shower will take a minute or two (three actually) to heat up but the hot water is unlimited and he explains that in case of fire meet he will wet us in the backyard but he never promised to do anything that couldn't do or he didn't have.

The beers are COLD ... the meals are incredibly well priced (how about a $18 mixed grill) and the open fire in the Bistro 240 Is welcoming. A quality bottle of Shiraz From just up the road was only $34 (the most expensive on the list) but most are about twenty bucks.

The bedroom is absolutely basic and we have shared facilities. But we don't mind that authentic old pub experience. We travel the world and stay in five stars to no stars and as long as they don't promise what they can't deliver we are happy.

We had a great night. It's not for everyone but it was for us. Cheers Dale and Kellie.

Best cheap place to stay in Ararat, I stayed overnight and was looking for a cheap option, didn't want to spend $100+ per night. Asked by email through their website and the owners got back to me quite fast, multiple times.
The accommodation was suitable for the price, shared bathrooms and toilets, all very clean and tidy. Room was basic but fine, single bed, table and chair, wardrobe and dresser all provided, though a little antique looking, it all added to the effect of the Hotel. It is upstairs on top of the pub, but no noise came though from the pub into the room.
Bed was comfortable, neat and clean. Great overnight stay, longer stays would be fine as well. Shared Kitchen facilities are available, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge etc. Lounge in the same area with TV and comfortable couches.
Great affordable accommodation right in the heart of Ararat.

not great, we had one order of the " man size 400g rump" and one order of 350g porterhouse, the porterhouse was far thicker and bigger than the rump. Rump was thin and very small. Staff member explained it as "different cut of meat" .. as if we don't understand the difference.. doesn't explain the weight? awful food, steaks were overcooked, very few vegetarian options, ran out of pizza bases at 7pm? Do yourself a favour and book elsewhere,

In Ararat near the Grampians in central Victoria for the day, so we decided to have a pub meal for dinner, we came upon the Shire Hall hotel , "strangely" it was across the road from the Ararat shire hall, the building was nothing special but the menu out the front looked interesting so we went in, what hit me first was that "old pub smell" we walked into the dining room and I was ready to walk out again, a very bland room and a miss match of tables and chairs confronted us, but before I could turn around and head for the door we were intercepted by a friendly young lady who ushered us to a table, not wanting to be rude we sat and looked at the menu I was quite hungry and the mixed grill took my fancy after all we were in a pub! My Lady ordered the Parmigiana for the same reason, when the meals arrived I remembered what pub meals were all about , the plates were totally full! And after I sorted out how to attack this mammoth meal I thoroughly enjoyed it, my Wife said her parmigiana was one of the best she had tasted, so if you are not fussed by decor or fancy surroundings, and you want a satisfying meal at a reasonable price then I would totally recommend the Shire hall hotel, while we were eating I watched at least half a dozen people get turned away because the dining room was full, so is seems the pub's meals were popular, all in all the front of house staff were friendly, we didn't have to wait too long for our meal, and we definitely didn't have any complaints about the quality or quality of our meals, I would recommend this pub if you're in Ararat.

Read the positive ratings and really wanted something different to the standard motel.
We bunked here just for a night in a double room. The room was clean and cosy, there were 2 shared bathrooms which was adequate. Dale was a great host. The pub bistro was apparently short staffed but they certainly didn't show any care about us as patrons sadly. I wasn't hungry enough for a full meal so asked for a childs meal and was told flat out No they wouldn't do that. I ordered a cider which came just in the bottle with no glass, ice or even a straw offered. Maybe small things, but this service let the business down.
I ordered a lamb shank which was very tasty, but went to waste.

We booked this hotel from reviews on trip advisor. The normal motel accommodation just wasn't what we wanted( lock the door and see no one!) This Shire Hall Hotel would have been a stopping off point in it's hey day. A bit quieter now I imagine but if you want quiet to sleep, friendly and basic this is it. Without a late night licence no 'doff doff'music and ravers to content with at 3 am.
We were given a family room for us two. This had a QB and double bunks, plus a trundle. Tiny hand basin and small drawers. Crisp bed linen and fluffy white towels. No breakfast is available but facilities eg microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge, tea, coffee, milk is there for guest's use in the common room/tv room.Toilets are separate from the showers which are shared. Not suitable for the very elderly or those with mobility issues as there are two flights of stairs to the bedrooms. There is a bistro but was not open Sun or Monday. Yes it is old, the furniture is old, the bathrooms are old, the floorboards creak, some painting is needed, but it was a very comfortable stay and we want to experience some of our Aussie pub accommodation. This is our second, the first being The Royal at Wychieproof. Cost at the Shire Hall Hotel was $60 for a night for 2. Tip, ask for an outside room, ours was inside so we had to content with the hotels noisy compressor hourly for 5-10 mins which was quite droning.

I wanted reasonably-priced, clean accommodation in the city centre and within easy walking distance of the train & bus station. I got more than I expected. Rooms are great value, are clean and comfortable and are quiet. Facilities are shared but there are plenty of them. The train station is five to ten minutes walk and there is a fast train to Melbourne - a little over two hours travel. The hosts are very friendly and helpful - a good atmosphere. There is a restaurant in the hotel (Bistro 240) that provides a good range of food and drinks at good prices.

It’s been a while since I’ve been here, but drove past it again recently and was reminded. A dingy dive which detracts from the beautiful surrounding area. Poor food and service. With a plethora of other, wonderful options in the surrounding area, take the time to explore a bit more, you’ll thank me for it later.

Had to come back as we enjoyed our meal so much the last time in Ararat. My wife had the Calamari that was just delectable with a gorgeous lime & chilli mayo. The chefs handmade chips were as good as any ever made. I had a Scotch Fillet which was mouth watering good. Tender & full of flavour. To top it all off the chef brought the meals to us. Also our waitress was just so friendly & helpful.

No TV in rooms but one in the guests' lounge upstairs. There are a couple of large TVs in the bar area.
