It is true to say that it is not The Ritz but it is obvious that our hosts are steadily bringing their hotel up to date. They really appear to be committed to that.
But if you are looking at a place to stay that is clean, comfortable and quiet, then this is the place. Our room was well serviced every day. It is well appointed with a lot of mod cons.
It is well located for exploring The Barossa and very well priced. If your holiday consists of staying in your hotel, getting massages, using the gym, spa or pool then this place is probably not for you. But if you want a clean, comfortable, quiet, well located and well priced room, then I recommend this place.
Holidays are made up of memories and we have fond memories of this place, thanks to the hosts.
I reckon that Russell and Vanessa will do well with this hotel and I wish them well. If I am ever back there, this is where I will stay again.
Rooms are typical of any budget motel. They have their own website, but the rooms are not very well photographed and appear smaller than they really are. You can not book via their website either. www.topdropmotel.com.au
The rooms that we were shown were clean, small, with recently refurbished wardrobe, tea making facility.
Flat screen TV, Kettle, Microwave, Bed, Bath towels, Sheets etc are all in excellent condition and work well. Bathroom is very small & old, but shower worked well. It is in a quiet location and there was no traffic noise.
It wasn't hot, so did not use air con which was also old. Wifi did not work at all. Sheets were clean and in good condition but top covers need updating as does interior decor.
There were certainly no spiders or bugs as per previous reviews and room was clean enough. As an overnighter, it's definitely worth considering.
When I explained that I had to book somewhere else and wanted my money back, they refused!
I had been staying there for years on my way across to Perth and back because the old owners were fabulous. But after 2 bad experiences with these people… never again.

First of all, I had booked for a two bedroom, room over the phone. My husband remembers my conversation distinctly requesting this. Upon arrival, we entered a room with one bedroom sleeping 3 people. I returned to the office to let the owner/manager know and she made it seem like it was my problem and that there was no way she would have made a mistake. She said, "I can offer you another single room and I will give it to you for $60 instead of $63"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We decided to keep the room and I told her that we were very disappointed.
Room seemed clean enough, just very very old - 1950's maybe 60's and had not been updated AT ALL on the inside. The bathroom door did not lock and slid open so someone had to hold the door if we did not all want to see the other go to the toilet.
We did not return until later that night and went straight to bed, after seeing a few bugs on the floor and a spider in the bathroom - we killed that.
The three of us never slept so poorly. I was itchy all over and soon realised that the blanket probably hadn't been washed for at months at the very least. The next morning we saw the manager changing the sheets but not the blankets. Gross. I am allergic to dust mites so am absolutely certain that this was the cause of my itchiness, which reduced when I took the blanket off. The bed was incredibly uncomfortable and I could feel my ribs on the electric blanket wiring. Awful.
Then we began to hear a mosquito hanging around and realised the managers had left a window open, which was not protected by a screen! We then realised why a can of fly spray was left for guest's use.
Awful awful awful. Will never go back - would prefer to drive back to adelaide. And would never recommend to anyone.
