Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Farm stay and great base for the Barossa! Was here for a long weekend, girls’ weekend checking out the wineries in and around the Barossa. Just wonderful! Also, the breakfast supplies - so fresh, farm to table. Michael is such a wonderful host

My partner and I stayed at the Chaff House for the long weekend and absolutely loved it. The location was very convenient and the accomodation was clean, well-maintained, and had all the amenities we needed. The food and produce included with our stay was delicious, and we loved touring the farm and seeing the animals. I would definitely recommend staying here, thanks again Michael!

We stayed 3 nights in Chaff House which is the smaller of the 2 accomodation options.Great location on a working farm albeit a way off the main road..Very close to Lyndoch. The room was a bit quirky but very well fitted out and comfortable. We received excellent breakfast provisions of bacon, eggs, sausages, bread, fruit, butter, wine etc.Very easy to cook your own meals. We really liked looking around the farm seeing the cows being milked etc.Excellent host in Michael.Reasonably priced.

Michael is a wonderful, warm and welcoming host whose farm and accommodation are first class, creating a space that you will remember being part of, rather than merely occupying rooms. Everything integrates: the cottage is everything and more that you could expect or require, his produce (fresh, tasty and delectable) is amazing, and peace and serenity complement your reasons for coming here. It is close enough to all you need, yet necessarily far enough to appreciate it's unique ambience. Loved every second of being here. Thank you Michael.

We stayed in the one bedroom studio. Many of the positive reviews are about the two bedroom cottage. Michael was a pleasant guy and we enjoyed learning about his farm, but the one bedroom accomodation was not up to scratch. The wall paint peeled everywhere and as there is nowhere to hang clothes, they ended up being filthy. The shower drenches half the bathroom, the door between the bathroom and main room does not close and there is a large gap at the top - not good. The floors were dirty. The external door jammed and was difficult to lock. Some lighting did not work. The room is not cleaned and we had to ask for towels after using them to mop up the soaking floor after showers. We thought the place really needed someone with the time to look after it properly.

Response from michael wohlstadt, Owner at Dairyman's Cottage
Responded 15 Oct 2020
Very difficult to satisfy when a client books a studio ( one bedroom) but really needs two bedrooms to accomodate personal sleeping arrangements... so much so such that they bring with them an inflatable (queen ) bed...a studio is not suited to that level of self imposed congestion and with obvious consequences...bad choice to take one bedroom when other options Are available ... hard to believe price point would be a barrier ... but who knows ! . the building is 170 years with white wash walls ... it shows wear and tear ... but ‘ filthy’ it is not ... the Novotel Is close by has lots of hanging space but here you find genuine people, an authentic experience , style, and real food that is recognised nationally..... choose carefully ... main stream suits many

We stayed in the Dairyman's cottage which was a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom self contained cottage. All the mod cons required. Michael the host was very welcoming and hospitable. Fridge stocked with produce from the farm and the highlight was feeding the pigs each day ! Great farm stay experience that we will visit again.

From the moment we arrived to the time we left Michael was so accomodating We arrived -6 of us after a fun day wine tasting to beautifully warmed cottages stocked with the freshest local produce Michael had purchased for us to cook an amazing roast and veggies. We made our morning coffee with milk straight from the jersey cows and the freshest eggs from the free range chickens Not to mention the yummy bacon sausages and fresh bread. We enjoyed 4 days touring the Barossa and Clare but if we didn’t choose to stay at the Dairymans cottages we wouldn’t have had such an amazing time. Thank you again Michael for your hospitality and the fab dinner we enjoyed with you and Phillip on our last night Thanks for a little insight into your country life it’s something we won’t forget and hope to return 🐂🐂🐂🐂

Dairy Man's Cottages have some great reviews on here - and that is why we booked. But be aware that there are two "cottages" - one which looked perfectly nice when we were there (from the outside at least) and which we think must be the reason for the good reviews and the other, smaller one which we stayed in... which was a nightmare from start to finish. It comprised a small studio (not a "cottage" as advertised and shown in photos) with incomplete roof (ie. the slanted part was an old conservatory roof with windows that do not shut and no blinds) and no proper ceiling between bathroom and living space, no real flooring so you don't want to walk barefoot, a very temperamental air conditioning unit which only managed to heat the room during our stay rather than cool, a huge number of squashed insects on the unfinished stone wall inside by the bed, no wardrobe or hanging space, and a small and dirty bbq area which looked like it hadn't been cleaned that season - indeed the whole studio is very rough and ready. To add to this, when we arrived late at night, the room was infested with bugs and mosquitos - it was so bad that my wife ended up being bitten on her face 3 times. I realise bugs and mosquitos can't be avoided in Australia, but had the room been properly sealed and with a working air con this would have been made a lot better. When we sought help at about 6.30am in the morning, after a night of no sleep, there was noone there to assist. We stayed 1 night and chose not to stay for the remaining 3 nights that we had booked and paid for. This was a really tough decision as it's not cheap - all in all we have lost about £670 (GBP) / $1200 AUD. We are in the process of trying to get a refund from Michael, the owner, for our terrible experience. After saying he would refund us one night's stay he then, completely out of the blue, changed his mind about this and instead refused to return any of our money to us at all - we are now in the process of taking it up with booking.com. The reason Michael said he would not return our money, even having already agreed to refund one night, is because we mentioned that we had been sent the review reminder e-mail by booking.com (the website we booked with) and there was limited time for us to write our review (we had been trying to resolve this with him over e-mail for weeks). None of this makes any sense to us and we are really left at a loss as to what to do. All in all, please make sure you avoid this property. It ruined the few days that we had in Barossa Valley and it has been stressful ever since trying to recoup even some of the money we have lost. ps. We checked in at a nearby chain resort hotel after this, and it is actually cheaper than Michael's accommodation - yet you get a 24 hour service, working air conditioning, bigger room and kitchen area, and most important of all, proper sealed roof and floors and no mosquitos.

Stayed for four nights - a completely great experience - the ultimate farm stay experience. There are two cottages on the farm for stays. You can help feed the pigs, watch the cows being milked, see the calfs and everyday the chickens greet you. You are off the beaten path in beautiful scenery from hills to vineyards to the farm. There are kangaroos and merino wool sheep that graze in the area. Michael is a wonderful host, committed to his farm, his animals and product. Max will lead you to the pigs grazing in the fields for their 5:30 "dinner" (slopping with milk and barley) and then milk the Jersey cows. The hens wander about and produce great eggs, no early am rooster noise here. The two bedroom cottage is wonderfully comfortable with two full baths and completely stocked kitchen. Wifi and tv are good. It is very quiet on the farm and very dark at night for star gazing. The produce that Michael provides (bread, farm fresh butter, fresh eggs and array pork products) are craft product. Michael sells these at the Barossa Farmers Market if you are fortunate enough to visit. The pork chops Michael provided are the best I have ever tasted. Enjoy cooking in your cottage with the farm products. Tanunda (stores, restaurants, etc.,) is a short drive away as are the wineries. Ask Michael for the Vicarage shiraz - a stunning wine - made from the vines you see from your cottage. Lots of acreage to walk around. What an amazing visit, a chance to live on a farm and enjoy life.
