Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I stayed in a Studio cottage by myself and will definitely be going back. The cottage was very spacious, neat and clean. The furnishings all appeared new and well taken care of and the bed and couch were very comfy. It was quiet, too, the original stone walls really keep out the heat and noise. There seems to be a lot of work going on behind the cottages to make the area a nice green space with amenities, which will be lovely. If I'd stayed longer it would have been a nice place to sit in the afternoon. Planning to go back with my husband soon!

Fantastic! What a surprise. This is a great accommodation option in Burra for a couple of days while exploring the historic sites around town. We had a two bedroom cottage which was like a small house (and a historic sit in themselves): two bedrooms (queen in one and two singles in the other), lounge, bathroom and kitchen (although basic). There is a share laundry facility (coin operated washer and dryer) within the ground as well as bbq facilities. The buildings have such thick walls they are not only quite but cool, even in the height of summer and without the aircon on. A stay at the Paxton Cottages is highly recommended.

A lovely cottage for a few days. it had all the necessary requirements for cooking, microwave. hot plates, some utensils, electric frypan. The weather during the day was beautiful, however the nights were cold. Although a split airconditioner/heater was in the lounge was effective the kitchen and bathroom were cold. I would suggest a small fan heater for the kitchen would be effective.
The bedroom was comfortable with plenty of blankets to keep you warm.
Nice comfy lounges to watch TV in the lounge room.
Thanks for a great couple of days, we will be back!

We were very excited after we checked in...an amazing three sided set of miners cottages around a place called Paxton’s square. Unfortunately we weren’t prepared for the roadworks which definitely didn’t add to a relaxing extended time away.
The explanation that they were fully booked for the weekend didn’t fit, given we could see people leaving on both Sunday and Monday, it was clear some planning could have meant those people with a longer booking could have been given a different location... or maybe a day of roadworks and a 7.00am wake up call is considered part of the guest experience? The response of “not my problem” when we checked out showed the level of care from our “hosts”.

The renovation of old miners cottages is ongoing. The one we stayed in was complete and well set up with nice furnishings, good kitchen equipment and plenty of space.
But there is no internet on the WiFi and the outside work is incomplete.
We stayed one night and then booked a second at the same price.
Service however was poor - no information about the free town WiFi, or refreshing of the room or welcoming feeling. A shame because we felt really let down.

Arriving at 7.30, after a day out in Clare with a group all in Hospitality( restaurant owner, vintners & international hotel exec) we were greeted in the most appalling manner by the sour lady at reception. Perhaps she had a bad day, but for the price charged, confirmed and deposited, to be told that the rooms had been resold, despite checking in within normal times & the attitude given was the worst I have experienced in over 40 years of travelling the world!
The rooms themselves were basic, but adequate. Perhaps a touch of finesse wouldn't go amiss, but the reception attitude is an absolute reason not to visit again. A shame when so much better could have been done & I would be extolling their virtues

We arrived in Burra late in the evening with no accommodation booked. Paxton Cottages was reccomended to us by a local. These historic cottages give you a real experience on the types of homes the originsl miners would have lived in. They have been restored well and offer everything you need for an overnight or longer stay. Walking distance to the town centre, tourist information, cafes and restaurants. On site free parking either front or back of the cottage makes it easy to unload luggage and supplies. They also offer multiple bedding options for families and the beds are VERY comfortable. Burra is well worth a visit if you love history, beautiful local stone historic buildings and architecture and its a good base to explore the magnificent Clare Valley wine region.

Great little restored cottages with a full kitchen, large lounge area with separate bedroom and bathroom. The tricky part is to acquire your key to the cottage when arriving you have to go to the reception at the Caravan Park down a side street.
The heating works well in the lounge area but the bathroom/toilet and kitchen was cold.
Watch out for the little raised edge around the old non operational fireplace in the kitchen. I stubbed my toe on it as the lighting in the kitchen isn't great. Parking was good at the back door. Entry via the back was best as the front door didn't want to release the door key without a lot of effort.
Cost was $176 per night

Liked · Clean and centrally located
Disliked · Cold weather and heater struggled to warm the space - OK after a while
Thick stone walls and slate floors lovely in hot weather but so good in cold.
Grey decor and cold white lighting didn't add to the atmosphere. The back addition with bathroom wasn't heated and there was no door to insulate against cold air entering and no heating in the bathroom.
We had to go back to reception to get wifi code bc it wasn't provided when we arrived with attendant advising it might not work. It worked for us, but might not for all.

Booked this accomodation on Bookings and specified we were a family of 2 adults and 3 children (12,10 and 10)
Asked if there was enough room in the two apartments? Answer was yes.
When we arrived, they gave us 2 seperate rooms - not connecting.
Would not help with trying to resolve the issue and just refused to acknowledge that as a “family with young children” you would want the rooms to be connected.

Blamed me and my booking - rather than actually being helpful and trying to resolve.

We ended up with 2 apartments well apart from each other.

The most unhelpful, stupid and useless people - who could not take the time to question the specifics of the requirement.
Anne, you were extremely rude and could not take note that when you book as a family, you want the accomodation as a family.
I will not be recommending this accomodation, because stupidly some people just don’t get it!

There should be as there are plenty of these cottages. Try ringing the Burra information centre as the cottages are not attended full time and I think we only had a mobile number which I no longer have.
