One of Australia's hidden gems and best-kept island secrets nestled in the Keppel Group of islands and part of the Great Barrier Reef...surrounded by pristine reef and a crystalline beach, Pumpkin Island is home to the rare Flatback turtles, unique to the area. This little private island of only 6.1 hectares is a quaint piece of paradise that offers a blissful escape from the stresses of modern day life and a chance to partake in pristine nature. The island has everything to make your stay in paradise a memorable one. In order to preserve the intimacy and authenticity of the island, the owners have created a small eco-friendly retreat, purposely limiting the number, with a select variety of self catering cottages to five, whilst accommodating up to 30 guests. There is a very unique feel to each of the comfortable, nature-inspired cottages, only a step away from the ocean’s edge. Each has a special name, colourful decor and a view of the Pacific Ocean. All cottages are self-contained and eco-friendly, powered by wind and sun, yet well appointed and charming. They have their own private bathrooms, with large decks overlooking seclusion and freedom, enjoying some of the most beautiful sunsets you will ever witness.Island Activities. Experience the Great Barrier Reef as you never have before; fish and dive the surrounding waters, lounge on the beach, read a book, go bird watching, float in the water or delve into the adventurous side of Pumpkin Island. Explore the largest reef in the world, with a scuba tank* or without. Practice your casting at the famous Giant Trevally cove. Test your wits against the Spanish Mackerel, Coral Trout and Black Kingfish out in the deep sea*. Or simply take a leisurely day exploring adjoining Little Pumpkin and its natural wonders with a glass bottom kayak on an island tour watching the graceful turtles and dolphins or spotting a whale or two in the distance. Hike up one of three peaks for unrivalled views of the surrounding islands and reefs. Take a swim at mid tide around the island's own coral lagoon and see a multitude of colourful coral, giant clams and fish. Snorkelling equipment as well as glass bottom sea kayaks are provided for your use. *Professional diving or fishing tours can also be arranged. Picnic lunch can be taken on the coconut palm-shaded lawns behind the tropical thatched hut overlooking the beach. Silence is broken only by the rustle of palm leaves and the gentle sound of waves breaking on the reef, whilst sipping away at sundowners from the Lookout’s peaceful surroundings. Alternatively, arrange to have your evening ended with a beach bonfire and scrumptious marshmallows.Fish for your own dinner within the shallow waters of the reef, or dine from our pre-order gourmet meals menu. Guests can self-cater or pre-order gourmet meals along with Australian wines, from the award winning Waterline Restaurant, at Keppel Bay Marina, Yeppoon. Meals and drinks are collected on the day of departure. The island will enchant all who choose Pumpkin Island for their self catering holidays in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.Pumpkin Island is a playground for families young and old, utterly romantic for couples and a hoot for a group of friends.

I just returned from a wonderful 3 night stay at Pumpkin Island with family and friends. I was unaware that such vibrant coral reef and tropical fish could be so easily seen at this location in the Southern Great Barrier Reef. This is a very child-friendly holiday location because only a small number of people can be accommodated at the island and each cottage has its own view of the beach; the adults could happily sit on the deck while watching the kids play. Kayaks, snorkels etc are all provided. I gather that some of the less positive reviews likely did not read the website properly, as the location is advertised as an eco-destination, not a 5 star resort. There is a strong focus on having as little footprint on the environment as possible, as well as energy and water conservation. To that end, there is no air conditioning but the rooms have fans as well as plenty of windows with screens to allow for cool ocean breezes. There is very minimal light pollution which makes for excellent star gazing, as well as very little noise pollution, which facilitated falling asleep to the soothing sound of the waves gently crashing just metres away. I am looking forward to returning to Pumpkin Island in the future.

It’s hard to put into words just how special pumpkin island is. You arrive to this pristine, secluded beach - white, soft sand and crystal clear water. The cottages are so comfortable and clean, with everything you need and only meters from the water. We loved all the activities, especially snorkelling the magnificent reef, the coral was so vibrant, colourful fish, turtles, sting rays… so many beautiful creatures. The kids ( and adults) had so much fun swimming back and forth to the pontoon, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. At night we cooked pizzas in the custom pizza oven, had marshmallows next to the beach in the fire-pit and cocktails at sunset. My son cried when we got home, wanting to go back to pumpkin. We can’t wait to go back again and again and again.

I have had the joy of staying with my family at Pumpkin Island twice, and seen the amenities improve over time while still maintaining a rock-solid ecological ethos. Pumpkin offers a perfect sheltered beach with crystal clear water that's warm enough to float in all day and cool enough to refresh through the heat of the day. There are beautiful coral reefs to explore with the snorkel gear provided, including giant clams, and unbothered tropical fish. You'll probably see a stingray or two as well. The hosts are friendly and helpful, and all is offered with a focus on minimising the footprint on the environment. A truly unspoiled paradise on Earth.

Pure Perfection in Paradise!!! My family and friends just had the most magical 3 night stay - none of us wanted to come home!!! The coral reef is still as stunning as last time, the kayaking around the island so much fun, the walk up the lookout hill - oh so lucky!!!

This is my second trip to pumpkin island with my family and it was just as special as the first. A gorgeous spot where you really feel like you own the island. The pizza oven is awesome for meals. You take all your food and drinks with you, but Eloise makes a delicious cocktail in the sunset bar which won’t disappoint. All cabins have spectacular views, they are all different but all great. There are some special little snorkelling spots around the island, very untouched coral, well worth the adventure, but half tide is best. We will be back!

If you've not been to Pumpkin Island already, you're in for a treat if you plan a trip. Get away from the white noise of a busy life and just 'be' where doing nothing is something. For us the weather wasn't as good as the previous visit there so snorkelling was out but visitingthe cocktail bar for sundowners was in. Absoultely love this place and watch for last minute cancellations all the time so we can plan our next escape.

We have just stayed at this beautiful slice of heaven. The weather didn't play its part, but we had a great time, none the less. We will be back. A whole group of us came for a 5 day stayed and had a fabulous time drinking cocktails and taking in the view. If you are considering a group trip, just be aware that 3 of the houses do not have rooms that are completely private. They are open plan with no doors and partitioned walls etc.

Pumpkin Island is a beautiful , but small Island with only a handful of rooms , we were lucky to have pebble point for a week , The cabin is well appointed with its own plunge pool ( a real blessing ) . For accommodation thats listed as 5 star the lounge is not very comfortable , and no air conditioning in the cabin, really quite underwhelming , you have to self cater or organise food from the waterline restaurant ( our choice ) and the food was well packed and yum, If you want to have a drink at the bar , you have to know in advance and write it on the blackboard or there will be no one there to serve a drink We had a minor health issue and tried calling the phone number that was given many times and no one answered or returned our call . Its a lovely little island but for $600 per night , we expected a little more luxury . If you have any medical issues maybe avoid Pumpkin Island

We stayed for 3 nights and it was not long enough. For a family trip we booked Pebble Point and the two bungalows. We felt like we were on a deserted island. Once we arrived and were in our accommodation we didn't have to see anyone else. Peace on the beach. We did take a boat and fished, kayaked and tried to snorkel ... the visibility was not in our favour but it was end of January! The weather was perfect otherwise. We ventured to the sunset lounge for cocktails on the Saturday night and enjoyed... maybe too many !!! We used the pizza oven but otherwise everything we needed was at our accommodation. The view from the rooms was picture postcard. We loved the island and will definitely return. Nothing to do but relax is easy in this location...loved it!

This was our 5th time at Pumpkin Island and staying at the Oyster Box. If you want a relaxing family holiday in a beautiful part of the world, then this is the place. Joining with family and friends is great or get to know the others on the Island at the time.
