On a whirlwind one day visit to Mount Morgan in June 2021, as part of a short 5 day stay in Rockhampton, I aimed to pack in as much as possible to soak up the history and tourist attractions of this interesting inland mining town. My travel to Mount Morgan from Rockhampton was by the local Young’s Bus Service and a very exhilarating trip that proved to be, particularly when the bus took to the winding mountain road.

The day was made memorable by “a tale of two country pubs”. The first hotel visited was the historic Leichhardt Hotel, which is the subject of this review. I made this a pit stop for a welcome drink after visiting the Mount Morgan Railway Station Museum (reviewed separately) and walking to there from the town centre and back in quite warm conditions. The other was the Grand Hotel (reviewed separately) where I took lunch after a visit to the Mount Morgan Historical Museum (also reviewed separately). Each pub, I have to say exuded their own individual charm and I was pleased I took time to visit both.

So, what can I say about the Leichhardt on the corner of Morgan and East Streets, Mount Morgan. It is the oldest pub in Mount Morgan and the original 1891 building still stands today which is remarkable when one considers how many of the early country pubs in Australia have burnt down at some time in their journey. I did find out that in fact there was the danger of fire burning the place down in 1922; however the hotel was spared with the fire destroying the three shops that bordered it on Morgan St instead.

The pub has an imposing appearance from the outside with a classic lace iron railing decorating a 'Queenslander' upper verandah and very purposeful lower landings with steps and tables and chairs for patrons to sit and enjoy a drink while watching the outside world go by. Here I enjoyed a nice cold beer and I met, for a fleeting moment, some friendly locals who happily engaged in conversation with me during my drinking time. There is a classic red chimney on the hotel’s roof. Being on a street corner there is an interesting corner feature separating the landing on Morgan Street from the one on East Street.

I enjoyed my short time at the Leichhardt and the beer went down very well. It was just the tonic to continue my historical voyage of discovery of this very famous former gold mining town. My next stop was the very impressive Historical Museum directly across the road.

When Mount Morgan was in its heyday, it boasted 27 pubs. Now there are only four and one of those is closed and on the market. The Leichhardt Hotel is one of the remaining three. Its point of difference is its beer garden, a quirky, pet-friendly oasis of greenery. mosaic work and TLC. The pub was built in 1899 and is the oldest of those remaining. Current owners Peter and Narelle are friendly and inviting.

We went for lunch on a sunny July arvo. Apart from the regular menu there is a range of lunch time specials, so why not drop in for grilled barramundi, a tasty steak sandwich or a burger. Accompany it with a cold ale and wile away the time in the beautiful surroundings.
