An 80 Bed hostel located at the southern end of The Great Barrier Reef. Close to beach and shops. Family owned and run in lush green surroundings. Staff are well-known for their warm welcome and providing a family atmosphere for all. There is plenty to do, be sure to ask at Reception for Free and local tours, walks etc.

I really liked this hostel. Friendly and helpful staff, it's clean, big kitchen and has a big outside area with bbq, hammocks and picknic tables. The beach, shops and coffee is within walking distance. And the hostel offers bicycle rental so you can explore the area. Or book a surf lesson or rent a surfboard because Agnes Water is a great place to learn to surf.

Had a short stay at cool bananas, but it's such a nice hostel! You will immediately be warmly welcomed by the staff in banana suits at the bus station. You don't have to drag your bag around, because they will take it for you. The hostel itself looks super cozy! The straff was very nice and friendly. there’s a cozy campfire in the evening as well! And don’t forget to book your surf lesson! Highly recommended! I could’ve stayed there for monthssss🍌

Unfriendly staff, no interactivity with guests and made me feel super uncomfortable. Had to make our own beds, kitchen and bathroom closed over lunchtime so not ideal Wifi doesn’t work No encouragement for social activities only if you are travelling with a group Nowhere quiet to sit, bathrooms grubby and tacky rooms

Yeah Na Yeah, not sure which hostel you are reviewing but this doesn't sound anything like Cool Bananas Backpackers 1770. The staff literally pick you up from the greyhound bus stop dressed as Bananas... We have 3 main social areas (Tv room, Picnic tables and Grass chill area) and everyone is included. we have many smaller aeras aswell where you can have some alone time too if you're not feeling social. You had to make your own bed, you poor thing! How could anyone dare to ask you to put sheets on your own mattress. That must have taken you like a whole 5 or 6 minutes, how could you recover from such an outrage........ Kitchens and Bathrooms need to be cleaned, The toilets are cleaned half at a time so there's always access to toilets and showers. Wifi = We are a small hostel in the middle of nowhere, just having the internet here is amazing! Sometimes it doesn't work but there's really nothing we can do about that except recommend you stay out of regional Australia.... I can only guess you're a bit of a c*&$ and maybe people don't like being around you because usually we are know as a social hostel where people always like to mingle. Nowhere quiet to sit? You have just been complaining that there was no activity or social interaction and now you are saying there's no where quiet to sit? Try one of the many Hammocks spread about the place? The front garden? the back garden? The more i go on i am starting to see where the problem might be.... Bathrooms grubby? didn't you just complain they were closed for cleaning? Now i am confused. Tacky rooms? Our rooms are intentionally basic, sooo not sure how they can be "Tacky" Seeing you have only written one review, (at the time of me reading this) i can assume you are either new to backpacking or just having a karren moment. Either way i am happy your opinion isn't shared by the vast majority of our guests and i do hope you find your place in the world. Backpacking isn't for everyone and you seem more interested in Luxuries and modern comforts than experiencing life. Bananas will still be dancing at the Bus stop <3

Super relaxing & friendly Hostel! Got picked up off the bus by a bunch of bananas who were very welcoming. Staff were fantastic and super helpful. It was pretty clean and shared spaces were cleaned regularly. It is quite a quiet area but it close to shops and the beach. They have bikes you can hire so would recommend hiring one and exploring! Would recommend if you want a few chilled beach/ surf days and a friendly quiet hostel.

Consistently affordable and friendly, being greeted by staff like Paulie makes you feel as welcome as an old friend. Open air entertainment areas, fully equipped kitchen and bbq facilities and the casual but safe atmosphere that only the best hostels can offer are to be found here. Amenities and location are second to none, done it before and will do it again. Thanks Cool Bananas!

Friendly staff and relaxed vibe. Clean and cheap :) Facilities slightly outdated however. WiFi wasn’t great. Great communual area with great huge tv but WiFi was too bad for us to watch anything really, unfortunately. No aircon in bedrooms just ceiling fans so did get a bit hot at night. Strange smell in the kitchen but it did have everything you needed in there including a coffee machine!

Thanks Grace for the review, although, 3 out of 5 seems a bit harsh, basicly your opening line perfectly sums it up = "Friendly staff and relaxed vibe. Clean and cheap :) " that is what most people are looking for when backpacking <3 after 2 years of being shut down because of COVID we are only now just getting back to business, and we are (even be it slowly) fixing the place up <3 you would have noticed the new tables, all new light fittings, all new fans, fresh paint? new washing machines? new massive TV (i know we are having troubles with the internet but that is out of our control and we are chasing Telstra about fixing it) all this comes at great expense and we haven't stopped there - many more updating projects on the way. i have heard that many of the hostels have better facilities but they also charge double what we charge. We are a small family owned backpackers in the middle of nowhere and we pride ourselves with offering "Friendly staff and relaxed vibe. Clean and cheap :) " please remember when you are writing reviews you are messing with peoples lives, the same people who want nothing more than you to have a safe, fun and relaxing time <3 peace out :)

The overall stay was nice at first. During the first night, however, it was freezing cold. We stayed here in september and it was 14° during the night, yet all we got from the hostel to sleep with was flat bedsheets. No blanket or anything else. During the night people had to grab their towels to keep warm.

ah yes, totally unexpected cold snap! normally it's not this cold in September, We have plenty of blankets which we give out over winter but it's been so hot lately we didn't hand them out. if you had asked at reception we could have given you one. glad you like everything else, two stars might be a bit harsh <3

Hostel looks very nice, gives island vibes. Fully equipped kitchen and communal food. Staff is very friendly, invited us for bowling all together and when we broke a bike when cycling home in the dark we got picked up, very nice! Room is ok, could be cleaner, was very dusty and the sheets didn’t smell fresh.

I stayed at cool bananas as an individual traveler and I had such a good time. The staff make you feel welcome, location is great, it’s really close to shops, and beaches, and a short drive or 20 minute walk from some really nice hiking trails. Highly rate it, I’ll be returning for sure
