We’re not your regular backpackers, but we were back in the 1980’s. Staying at the backpackers was a sudden whim and are we glad we did. The place is funky, friendly, comfortable, professional and with plenty of character. We were welcome by all and had a great time. Big thanks to both the staff and the other residents…. Made me feel young again. Just love Agnes and the 1770 Backpackers, thank you

Every time I come back here it feels like home. I just can’t seem to stay away! I love this place, the vibes, and the people make it so so special! Oscar and Javi have outdone themselves to create such an incredible space open for anybody. Definitely the perfect spot for solo travellers to come and meet other like-minded humans. If you’re into campfires, surfing, or just chillin in a hammock while petting a dog then this is the place for you. Crazy bunch of characters who you’ll meet, and it’s really the charm of the whole place. Every time I’m around the area I make sure to pop in, and you always bump into the same people coming back! Shoutout to Jack for taking me on a sunrise surf and for being permanently stoked~~

I very, very rarely leave reviews but I had to for this place, it's literally a Mecca for backpackers! An absolute MUST STAY! The owner is a genuine legend and has created a homely, quirky, chill environment that seems to bring people back again and again!! This place seems to attract the loveliest, most like minded people and Ive always have the best times here! It is the one place in Australia I felt the most at home and would recommend everyone to visit!

Agnes Water took my heart a couple of years ago and after doing a loop to Australia I still consider this location to be the most magical place I've been. But my experience not only come from the place itself but also from what I experience at Backpackers@1770. I felt welcomed from the very beginning I stepped in. The atmosphere I could breath in from the staff members, the owner and the rest of the people who were also there was unreal. I've been coming back to Agnes every year ever since and stay at the hostel, vibes never changed. I'm definitely coming back!

We have been reoccurring guests at backpackers 1770, the staff are always amazing and can’t do enough for you, they are always so accomodating to myself and my children on our stays. The rooms are beautiful with a homely feel and you can find everything you need in the common areas, including plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied. Perfectly located right next to the beach and shopping facilities, there is also board hire available from reception, you can find everything you need for your time in Agnes just by talking to the friendly staff at backpackers 1770. I honestly couldn’t recommend this place high enough, hands down the nicest backpackers we have ever stayed in, we can’t wait until our next stay ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Looks like a cool spot to stay. Unfortunately for them, they had a case of COVID in the hostel who tested positive the day that we arrived. When we went to check in, we were made aware of the case, told that they were in isolation and that nobody in the hostel had been a close contact. Essentially, the staff member reassured us that the case was not of concern and told us that the person (case) had been sleeping in their van alone (at the hostel) up until they were in isolation in a private hostel room, where they tested positive that morning. We later spoke to a concerned guest who told us she had in fact stayed in the same dorm room as the person with COVID (prior to them isolating) and that there had been multiple other people who had also stayed in the room with her. These people were still staying at the backpackers and not isolating. She (the guest) advised us that she would not stay if she was in our position, and that she was only staying with intent to not spread the virus in the community until she could get tested the following day. This made us feel very uneasy as the receptionist had clearly lied and tried to play the situation down so that we would not cancel our booking. We were booked to stay in a 10 bed dorm. This would have not only exposed us to close contacts in the common areas, but potentially sleep in the same dorm alongside them. The hostel management and staff were made aware of the positive case in the morning but we were not contacted at all prior to our arrival which was at 4pm. We decided to cut our holiday short and fortunately had a place to stay in Bundaberg. Other guests who were checking in before us weren't this fortunate and decided to stay as there was no other available accommodation left in Agnes Water. It's a shame as the backpackers looked like a great place to stay and I'm sure I would have loved it on a normal day. Whether or not lying was direction from manager/owner is unclear, however, it is extremely unethical to mislead people and put their health at risk to save some dollars in cancellations.

Hi Tim, We are sorry to hear that you were left with that impression. As you mentioned, it was the day you arrived we found out that a guest had tested positive for COVID – 19. As soon as she informed us that she had previously been in close contact with another person with COVID - 19, she was given a room with a private bathroom for isolation. When her test came back positive, she did indeed continue in isolation. This person never slept in her van, she was always in the room mentioned above. On the other hand, at that time you were informed that there was no other close contacts to her, because we had not been informed of any case close to this guest at that time. Staff were practicing social distancing (as far as it is possible within the premises of a hostel) and no guest had reported close contact to the positive case (everyone was asked). QLD public health authorities were already aware of our circumstances and we were following their instructions to inform new guests, former guests, future guests and staff. When a person is asked if they have been in close contact with someone with COVID, it is their responsibility to report it immediately so that the necessary measures can be taken. The guest you mentioned that slept in the same room as the COVID affected guest, informed us after speaking with you, a very unfortunate act but one that we cannot control. As I mentioned before it is everyone's responsibility to be honest and act as the circumstance warrants. As soon as this guest informed us, we requested to begin immediate isolation until the COVID test could be performed at a hospital outside of Agnes Water. In relation to your concern that there were more people sharing a room with the affected person, we can ascertain that there was no other person sleeping in the same room. As you indicate, the case was confirmed in the morning, during which our office is concerned with check out and cleaning. This day was cleaning, check out, inform the authorities, those who were already present in the hostel (which is a priority) and then wait for instructions from the public health authorities. The instruction from QLD Health was to continue with the hostel open and inform all guests (old, new and future until 7.1.2022) of the risk of incubation in the hostel. This way, they can decide whether to stay at the hostel or look for another place that suits them better, without any cancellation cost, of course. As you can imagine, all this that I summarize in a paragraph, was a matter of hours and we did not have time to contact all the guests who were arriving the same day, because at that minute, there were other priorities, as I’m sure you can appreciate. That same day, in the afternoon, we managed to get more staff to support us with the mission to contact each guest and prevent them from having to come to the hostel to be informed. We also secured 40 Rapid Antigen Tests from Gladstone All guests who have stayed at the hostel since this happened have signed a document informing them of the possible risk of incubation and the regulations of the QLD public health unit. As a team we have done everything possible to safeguard the health of our staff, guests and community. Indeed, we have had many cancellations on this basis. This was supposed to be the busiest time of the year for us and it certainly has not been, but our conscience is clear knowing that we have done our best, that we have followed the instructions of the QLD Public Health unit and we trust that each person will take responsibility for their own actions, health and safety. That particular day, the owner spent many hours on the phone to Qld Health, often on hold, awaiting instruction. Once a case manager was supplied, things became clearer, but we have never experienced this before and so it was new ground for us all to navigate. Once again, we are sorry that you took this view.

If you go to 1770 stay here!! This place is so nice, loved the Art Deco all over the place. I stayed in a private room which was so comfy but what I loved the most was the outdoor shower!! The place has also kitchen facilities and free pool! You will feel the good vibes from the entrance! I will definitely come back to this place if I am in the area!
