Detailed Reviews

This is the second time that we rented the Lodge. We loved it so much the first time that we returned exactly two years later. This time we rented both the Fides and Headland for a week. The care takers two years ago was a young couple and she was a excellent cook who provided us with prepared meals. This had to be prearranged of course.
The caretaker now was older and the property was not maintained to the same high standards.
Despite this the facilities were excellent and the views stunning.
These lodges are usually rented by families and they did provide a high chair and a portacot for our one year old. However with an open fire in the living area they should provide a fire guard.
The bedroom are quite cold at night and provision of electric blankets would have helped greatly

This place is amazing, we only stayed three nights wish we had stayed longer. Gill is the perfect host. The views are incredible, such a beautiful peaceful place with loads of wildlife, birds, Dolphins, koala and kangeroos. Sat on our patio with a glass of wine watching the Dolphins play..

The house itself is wonderful - understated class and a casual luxury that makes living here (for a few days) a treat. But the views are even better - waking up to big skies and incredible ocean views every morning is a delight, and you get those views everywhere you walk in the house. Then there is the wildlife: wedge tailed eagles soaring above, kangaroos in the grasses and bushes out the front - even dolphins coming in to use the bay to teach their young ones how to swim. Plus Amelia and Shane are great hosts (and yes, the fresh bread is every bit as good as others have suggested).
In short, probably the best place we've ever stayed at. Romantic, restorative and thoroughly hypnotic - you could spend hours just watching from your deck (we did!) Can't recommend this place highly enough.

Returned to KI with my son who’d fought with the CFS to fight the fires here. We stayed at Headland House. The road in isn’t well explained by the host nor the newish caretakers. At the end of the Playford Highway, you hit a long dirt track. Be careful and slow down as it’s very slippery in parts especially once inside the property and when it’s been raining. If you can get a 4WD, do so. The views are amazing! But, the house gets very hot on a warm day and freezing cold on a wet day. The place looks unfinished and there’s poor insulation. There’s also no curtains on the windows just awnings so the sunlight blasts you early in the morning. Our place had lots of blow flies which wasn’t a great start. There’s also minimal food provisions and not even a welcoming bottle of wine or fruit which seemed pretty stingy, no local produce. The kitchen is well equipped but the bbq was filthy so we decided not to use it. I can see in previous posts that food catering was supplied and I wish this had continued. Not sure why it stopped? Would have been handy. First aid kit needs updating especially with compression bandages. The rainwater is lovely. The combustion heater is welcoming but doesn’t work well to warm the lodge especially the bedrooms and bathrooms. Could do with more than x1 towel per guest. Didn’t dry out very well. Also one of the toilets leaks and all bathrooms smell of sewerage but if you open the sliding doors the smell clears and the views are great. Underfloor heating would have been useful. Appreciated the Netflix. Useful on a very wet Sunday. Beach is lovely but a clear path for guests needs to be cleared and guests warned about tiger snakes especially international guests. Fencing at far north west tip up from the house needs to be repaired and perhaps a sign to ask guests to stand back from edge especially when windy. All in all a nice experience but we were ready to leave after the 3rd day. Big temperature issues in the lodge, loo issue and it really needs some time and money and a bit of TLC re-invested back in to it to bring back what reviews suggest like it was back 4 years ago perhaps. Incredible views but left slightly disappointed with the lodge and lack of service given its remoteness and price.

The website for Kangaroo Beach Lodges has some spectacular photos. Even so, our expectations for a beautiful place to stay were exceeded on arrival. Even better, our lodge was equipped with everything you might need, and the quality of the furnishings and thoughtful design were of the highest level. If you admire architecture you will be looking up the folks who designed these lodges. The hosts, Amelia and Shane, were perfect -- there if you needed them, but happy to leave you to your privacy.
We were there for four nights in early December 2014. As just two people, we used the main suite of the Headlands lodge. There were guests in the other lodges, and we did have a chance to say hello on the beach, but the lodges are well sited and when you are at home you feel you are the only house on the island. In addition to the very happy cattle in the distance, we had a few curious kangaroos in the evening and twice we saw many dolphins frolicking below us.
As other reviewers have noted, the location is remote. Do as we did and stock up on groceries on arrival. we flew into Kingscote and there is a small but serviceable Foodland and good wine shop there. We settled in and enjoyed the view. True relaxation and wonderful outdoors experiences. If you are a larger group, I would consider the catering option. Now that I know how capable the management is, and how they care for your every need, I would just outline for them the meals that would be needed, and I feel sure they would be as high quality as every other aspect of the Lodges.
We will definitely be back. These lodges would be the perfect base for a family or group celebration.

We were there in December and I must say it's a great place for family. The lodge was perfect. There were 4 bedrooms, 2 toilets, huge living room and kitchen area.
Even though the location is a little far from where everything was, it had a fantastic view, beach was a little far down the slope but we still went there at least once during our stay. We were well-stocked for our trip so we didn't worry about not having enough food throughout our stay. We cooked almost everyday and it was very homely. The lodge was self-sufficient.
The 3 bedrooms were in another part of the lodge which we had to run to at night because it was cold, the walkway was not sheltered from the winds. The master bedroom is as big as the other room in the other side of the lodge, we had 2 cots in the room and still had space to move about.
The only downside was the bandwidth of the internet which is quite common in Australia, I guess coming from Singapore with unlimited bandwidth we were rather disappointed that the internet got a bit slow towards the end of our trip. Then again, if you're there it should all be about nature and not internet.
If i were back on Kangaroo Island, I would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful setting, but the houses don't seem to be maintained as they should be. When we arrived, there were dead insects on the kitchen floor, urine drips on the toilet seat in one of the bathrooms, and many of the dishes had not been washed very well. I rewashed every dish, pan and utensils in the kitchen before using them. A a sliding door came off its track, nearly crashing to the ground. The "road" to the private beach is treacherous, even for a 4WD SUV. There's no air conditioning, and not many screens, so 2 of our 4 nights there were too hot for comfortable sleeping. The caretakers were initially friendly, but when I had a question, the man became surly.

All the positive reviews already posted for Kangaroo Beach Lodges are spot on, so my recommendation is just to believe them and go and experience this great place! As we had a last minute decision to go to Kangaroo Island, we chose the Car and Cuisine Package, and what a treat that was! The food was AMAZING ... always fresh and beautifully presented. Everything you could possibly need for breakfast (and more!) was already in the lodge when we arrived, and each day lunch and dinner were delivered fresh, around mid morning. If you are thinking about this option, you wont regret it. (Your waistline might, but that's what holidays are for!) We went as a couple, and loved it, and would happily return with friends and use the whole lodge. Either way, you will love Kangaroo Beach Lodges!

This is the best place, anywhere in the world, that my wife and I have ever stayed at. If you love nature, beautiful scenery, peace and quiet and the absolute top quality of self catering accommodation, you will adore Kangaroo Beach Lodges. My wife and I have been immensely lucky to stay in many wonderful hotels around the world, and many have cost 3 or 4 times as much per night, but this is without doubt the best lodging and resort we have ever used. Everyone in the world should experience the sheer joy of staying at Kangaroo Beach Lodges at least once in their life. On our first afternoon, we could see dolphins, sea eagles, kangaroos - and black angus cows! - at the same time from our verandah. If there is a heaven on earth, this is it.

Just spent 5 days at Headlands with 4 friends, one of the Kangaroo Beach lodges. The lodge is situated on top of the cliff overlooking Kangaroo Beach, a stunning view in top quality accommodation, where everything is catered for including insect repellant! Amelia our host was lovely and nothing was too much trouble for her. She even made us homemade bread! We decided to have a meal made for us by Amelia one night and arrived home to a beautifully decorated table, followed by a lovely meal. A beautiful, if remote, stay in excellent accommodation, made that bit special by Amelia's friendliness and attention to detail.
