Cape Lodge appears in The Luxury Lodges of Australia compilation. It has no place there until the accommodation has undergone a major refurbishment. The setting is beautiful and the staff delightful but, I think, are embarrassed by what they have to offer guests. I will review the restaurant separately. Back to the room. Tired with cheap fitted furniture. Several light bulbs not working and not replaced. Ill fitting roller blinds that allowed the very bright car park light directly into my face when in bed. Fridge door didn’t close properly. Although clean the room needed a deep clean. Cheap motel chic. I tried sleeping with a face mask on 2nd night but enough was enough. Fran, one of the lovely long suffering staff, helped by letting us sleep in another, much larger suite overlooking the lake. Better night’s sleep but pleased to leave. The last night accommodation charge was removed from the bill.

We stayed for 3 nights in a Lake View Suite. Check in was friendly and efficient, and the charm of the architecture and the grounds of the estate were immediately evident. A buggy took us and our luggage to the suite a couple of hundred metres from the main building; our room was up a steep flight of stairs. The room itself was delightful; super-king bed, good linens and towels, comfortable sitting area, large bathroom with walk-in rain shower, jacuzzi, freshly ground coffee and cafetière, fridge, and a very pleasant veranda with a table and chairs. We saw no evidence of furnishing tiredness reported by other reviewers but it is true to say that the room was very comfortable rather than spectacular. Which of course is exactly right for a lodge hotel of this type. Breakfast was excellent, part buffet and part cooked to order. We had opted for the Dinner Bed & Breakfast option and the dinner menu was very short and didn’t change for the three days, which could have been limiting especially for vegetarians, but the chef offered us options on the second and third evenings which perfectly resolved the problem. The quality of the food was excellent and the restaurant overlooks the lake and enjoys spectacular sunsets when the sky is clear. The hotel is situated deep in the country and it is difficult to conceive how you could make the most of the attractions of the area - rugged coasts, caves, quaint little towns - without a car. In summary Cape Lodge is a classical example of the country lodge hotel, and it does its job very well.

Beautiful room and location. Lovely professional restaurant staff. Food excellent. Pool area quiet and stunning. Gym could have better machines - there's only two and they are not user friendly! Tristan the Manager is superb at what he does and has a great pride in his hotel for good reason.

Thank you to Tristan and the team at Cape Lodge. What a wonderful experience. The rooms and beds were fantastic. The facilities faultless, the staff and restaurant were excellent. Lots of little things done very well - the tea and coffee in the gust lounge, fridge full of complementary drinks at the pool, welcome drinks at the restaurant and very helpful staff. Fully booked on Sat and Sun but it is so well laid out, we felt like the only guests! Put this on your wish list.

Our last stay at Cape Lodge was 6 years ago for my 74th birthday,it was just brilliant and we were looking forward to another treat. How disappointed were we.The whole place seems to have been run down, the furniture in our room looked like something out of a second hand shop,I wouldn't have it my house! The bathroom looks as if it has been renovated, very nice, very modern.Food was a fixed menu for both our days there, the offerings were not very nice but the staff were great and doing a good job.We always told our friends "the food is to die for"but not on this occasion unfortunately. My wife and I paid $1629 for the two nights for a special package(via Luxury Escapes) and feel we paid too much and will never stay at Cape Lodge again unless there is a major improvement, not only to the buildings(they look as if they need a coat of paint) but also to the restaurant. Our room cleaning service was also below par,my wife reported there was dust in the room in one corner and there was a spider lodging in the toilet. It pains me to say it but you've lost us Cape Lodge,Crown Towers is much better value. John & Gloria. Room 18 Date 5th-7th Dec.2023

We had a fabulous experience, the dinner was delicious and wine recommendations from the sommelier were superb. Afternoon tea was luxurious as well! Our room was lovely and all the staff were great. We will be back.

We had a two night stay at the Cape Lodge, which turned out to be generally to our satisfaction. Very friendly staff throughout. Nice spacious room and bathroom. We had dinner on the first evening in the restaurant. Fine four course meal with matching wines (although for the price, we have had better). Breakfast was also very good, served in a nice setting. We would criticise two things: the fixtures in the room and bathroom are getting on a bit and perhaps no longer on the level expected in a luxury establishment. The restaurant does not offer an à la carte menu, so if you do not want to eat the four course menu again, you either have to drive quite far to a restaurant or order in-room dining, which consists of a cold platter of meat and cheese. Fine for us, together with the complimentary bottle of wine.

We had set aside 4 nights at the end of our Western Australia holiday to stay in the luxurious surroundings of Cape Lodge… and we were really disappointed. With great regret, we checked out 2 days early. A luxury hotel really should be able to cater for the varying needs of its customers, and look after them so that their stay is indeed luxurious, and effortless. For some reason, Cape Lodge refuses to serve a light a la carte evening meal for its customers. Instead it directed you to the towns nearby, with an expensive taxi ride there and back if, like us, you enjoy a glass of wine with your dinner. That is an effort, particularly on a rainy evening, and if you choose to go into Margaret River, it is quite a substantial undertaking: Margaret River is 30 minutes driving away. The alternative is to go to the Cape Lodge restaurant for the no-choice chef’s tasting dinner, which is $110 for 4 courses, or more if you go for 6 courses. Plus a choice of wine from the incredibly expensive wine list which was far more pricey than any other wine list that we found on our travels. And surprisingly, the restaurant wine list did not list a single Cape Lodge wine. All this would be more-or-less OK if the food had been delicious, but the one meal that we had there really wasn’t. The 4 courses lacked flavour, and both the fish, and the fudge slice for desert were seriously over cooked. So on our second - and final - night in the hotel we ate lunch elsewhere, and had a picnic in our room, watching the surfing on You Tube. The hotel itself is impressive, set in beautiful grounds with lots of birds in the trees. The pool, however, is chilly and looks like it hasn’t been used very much. Our lakeside room was smart and well appointed. But the best thing about the hotel - the very best thing - was the staff. To a man, and a woman, they were consistently polite, cheerful and helpful during our visit. We left Cape Lodge disappointed. We had really expected that this would be a wonderful, happy place to end our stay, and we drove away on the third morning feeling depressed and let down. The silly thing is that it could so easily have been different. An affordable menu for supper and more reasonable options on the wine list would have made all,the difference, and a heated swimming pool would have put icing on the cake. As it is, the hotel was almost empty during our stay, which made it dull for us, and must have been dispiriting for the staff.

We didn't experience any of the issues others have commented on. On arrival for our 4 night stay we were swiftly checked in by the lovely Tina and shown to our Garden Deluxe Room. Nicely furnished, spacious and clean. The bathroom was light and airy with a modern walk in shower, separate jacuzzi bath. The bed was large and comfortable with a nice open plan seating area next to it. The room included tea/coffee facilities a fridge with complimentary drinks which was replenished daily. The outside terrace overlooked the beautiful gardens and lake and was furnished with a simple table and chairs. The trails around the grounds made for a nice relaxing walk. We participated in the complimentary wine tour with the Sommelier Guido who gave an informative and light hearted talk on the estate. Breakfast was both continental buffet style and a la carte cooked to order from the menu. Well presented and delicious. Evening meal we had the set menu on our first night including oysters and the wine pairings. This was expensive but well worth it in our opinion. Staff were always friendly and attentive. The only feedback would be the pool area was a little jaded but we made use of it

My wife and I spend 4 nights at the Cape Lodge in early February. It was the last stop on our Australia Tour and after reading a few recent rather scathing reviews we were nervous. We should not have been - while The Cape Lodge is a little scruffy around the edges, the bones are good and the property itself is still lovely and private. The location is excellent for wine tasting, beaches, and hiking. We thought we had booked a Deluxe Garden View room but ended up in a Lakeview Suite (26) which was quite spacious and included a sitting area with large screen TV. The bathroom was also large, but clearly a little dated (only one sink and a huge oval jacuzzi tub). The room was clean and bright. Our package included dinner and breakfast, and we found the food to be very good, with lots of locally sourced fresh produce. We also chose the wine pairings each night (extra $) and found the choices well matched to the dishes. Guido the sommelier provided nice commentary for each of the wines. I'm only giving 4 stars because the place does need a makeover - the pool needs to be redone ( but it was clean and very inviting), the rooms need a refresh, the tennis court that you see driving on looks ragged - but all of this may not matter for long. We were told that a major renovation was happening. The purchase by Twiggy Forrest that was announced a year ago apparently closed while we were there (rumor, not verified). If he turns it into a Lizard Island quality resort it will be a game changer and probably a lot less affordable than it is now. So enjoy the location, the excellent food and the slightly shabby chic while you can.
