My wife and I stayed at the Walopole Lodge on a clear but chilly weekend. We stayed in a double on-suite room, which are located away from the hostel area. The room was spacious, the bed was comfortable and hot rainwater showers were amazing. The lodge is well located, with the estuary and town centre all in close walking distance. It has free wireless internet which came in handy.

The managers of the lodge (who are the new owners apparently) were very friendly and accommodating. They make sure the place is kept spotless and wood heater is always stoked. One of the backpackers staying at the lodge said that she couldn't get to the Treetop Walk due to their being no transport in Walpole so the managers were kind enough to drive her out there, which was very accomodating on their part.

We will definately be staying there next time we are down there.

I stayed in the Walpole Lodge for only one night with my boyfriend, but we felt really welcome and at home here. The facilities were spotless, and the couple that owns the place was very friendly and helpful. They'd just taken over the place when we visited and were very eager to please and even asked us for feedback. There's free wifi, which is a luxury in Australia. The kitchen was very well equipped too. Great value, great place to stay when you're in the area.

We were booked to stay at this establishment and were expecting it to be very ordinary. That was the understatement. It is nothing more or less that a backpacker establishment with community kitchen and community dining hall. They do not actually tell you that if you do not bring food, you will go hungry. We paid for the night to honor the booking but found another motel to stay at for the night.

We booked ourselves a private room at this hostel since there isnt really any alternative option available in that little town.
The price for a private room of 65 AUD is more than ridicolous for the quality you receive.

A few things that went terrible wrong:
1) Wifi didn't work - owners response: It works for some people but none of the guests were able to connect. The owner does not show the slightest interest in getting it fixed anytime soon. His excuse is that everyone should just use the PC that is available there for everyone to use. But do you really want to enter all your passwords on a public PC that has full admin access rights enabled? I don't think so!

2) Price
The price is way too high for similar acoomodations. You can get a better fully private motel with a private bathroom for a lower money.

3) Showers & Bathrooms
There are not many there but we managed since we were there during off season and not many guests were there. But during regular peak season expect long lines for showers and restrooms since there are just a few available, if I remember correct 2 toilets and 1 shower for each gender but I might be mistaken on this one, it could have been 2

4) Noise
Basicially there is 1 BIG room that is the living room, dining room and kitchen together. To that 1 big public room all the dorm rooms and private rooms are directly connected with 1 door online.
Now as you can imagine, it gets quite loud! If someone in the dining room eats something, you will hear his silverware hit the plate, if someone decides to eat breakfast at 8am, trust me, you will wake up because of it.
Also the walls to the next rooms are as thin as paper. I could hear our neighbors talk in their regular voice. So if your neighbor has set a morning alarm, it will definetely wake you up, too.

All in all, expensive place with terrible room structure, no working wifi in a small town where the only open place after 8pm is the gas station ;)
Sleeping in our car would have been better than staying at this place.

Response from walpolelodge, Owner at Walpole Lodge

Thankyou for your feedback. Since you stayed at the Walpole Lodge we have reaffirmed to our managers how important it is that the Wifi is working and they now know how to rectify any issues. Our price for a double room with shared bathroom is $65 but we offer a 10% discount for multiple night stays and additional discounts throughout the winter. There are 7 bathrooms and toilets available for guest use. The night of your stay was during the Feb/March long weekend and the lodge was fully booked throughout the weekend. Our bedrooms with shared facilities are located off the communal area; there are only 4 of these rooms available for guests and can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests. We are in the process of upgrading the sound proofing for each of these rooms. An additional 5 rooms are located off the back verandah including our 4 ensuite rooms. We hope you enjoy the rest of your travels in Australia.

I stayed there in the fall which seemed to be something of a down time. Most of the others there were only staying one night passing through. Good location close to several of the national parks and other forest attractions, such as Mount Lindsay and Mount Frankland. The room had a very good heater and plenty of blankets which was much appreciated - it was unusually cold at the time and several of the other places had only underpowered heaters that were never able to warm the room. The kitchen was well-equipped with lots of space, although it could get crowded if the place was full. Free wifi was nice too, many other places charge a ridiculous amount (I don't even mind paying something, but $1 for 10 minutes is nuts).

Most of the single and double rooms open into the common area, which I could see possibly being an issue if there were loud people there. It's not exactly a place people go to party though, mostly families and backpackers, so probably not an issue (it wasn't when I was there). The owner was very friendly and helpful.

Our family of 4 took 2 of the end family rooms and were blissfully comfortable in clean and welcoming surroundings, tucked up in very comfortable beds next to peace and quiet of the forest - no main road to contend with! Special effort was made by Mal and Lee to accommodate our boat parked next to our rooms with our kayaks making it easy to load and unload and clean our stuff. Fridges made it easy to store refreshments. Highly recommend for family to stay at. We did not use kitchen as we were kept well fed by walking to Golden Wattle Bakery nearby.

Decided to make a spontaneous visit to Walpole over the new year to shoot an aerial movie of the spectacular South West WA scenery. Mal the manager was extremely helpful in fitting me in and making me feel very welcome. The facilities were basic but very clean, bedding and towels were provided and the accommodation is within walking distance to anywhere in the town. I found Walpole Lodge just perfect for me and will certainly be returning next time. Nice grassed area out the back for kids and excellent shared kitchen facilities. The staff even invited me in for some pizza, which was lovely. Thank you to Mal and Li for a very pleasant stay.
