Having read the reviews, and had friends who had less than stellar service experiences at Samphire, we went prepared for a bit of DIY on our Christmas break. Things have obviously dramatically improved over the last 12 months. We loved the resort vibe, chilling by the pool (enjoying great music), attentive and friendly service and Lontara was excellent (separate review pending). The only niggle was we were initially allocated a ground floor Sandy Lane room- I had requested an upper floor when I booked in April. Anyway mistakes happen so put in a call to reception to be told that we couldn’t swap (or only possibly the next day). Serendipitously the line dropped out twice and the guy didn’t call back so we headed to reception and a charming lady colleague (head receptionist?) had us sorted in a flash. Very pleased with our room change with its ocean view. Super comfortable bed and well thought out amenities - only improvement would be to the towel-hanging arrangements - strange no one thought to swap the light switches to the hallway and have towel/robe hooks on the bathroom side- most bizarre. Perhaps that’s why they have opted to only have robes available on request in those rooms- nowhere to put them! Anyway- very small issue- we loved our stay so much that we’d have extended our four night stay for another night or two if we could. As it is we are already thinking of booking a birthday trip in April! Thanks for making our Christmas so memorable.

Room Tip: Book a room on the upper floor - unless you are on the poolside

Wow! What an amazing experience we had staying at Samphire for Christmas! From the moment we arrived the staff couldn’t be more welcoming, friendly and helpful. The whole experience was beyond our expectations. The rooms are beautiful- minimalist, coastal chic style that suits Rottnest perfectly. Love that the amenities aren’t in little plastic bottles that go to landfill. Beds are super comfortable. We had a poolside room on the ground floor which was perfect for a family with easy access to the pool. Not noisy at all. Despite being at full occupancy, the pool was never crowded and we could always get a daybed. Poolside service was exceptional, cocktails and food were delivered quickly and all delicious. We have already booked to come back in February and cannot wait! We have decided it will be our yearly Christmas destination too. This hotel is exactly what Rottnest needed- 5 star with exceptional service, but laid back and friendly. Thank you to all the staff for making our Christmas holiday magical! We can’t wait to return!

Rottnest Island is such an important place for me. I spent every October school holidays there since I was 4 and continue to take my children there. Naturally when my fiance and I got engaged in November Samphire was the first venue we enquired with for our wedding. I rang Samphire as prompted by The Rottnest Island Authority website and was rudely and promptly told to get in contact with the RIA in regards to a beach ceremony. After 3 phone calls to both agencies who hand balled me back and forth to each other I finished up on the phone to Manager of Samphire. She was extremely rude and un-helpful. She summed up our conversation by saying this is a busy time for her and she doesn't have the time to deal with my questions in regards to a wedding. This left me devastated and left a negative impact on my wedding plans. I have since read all the terrible reviews on here and also spoke with a friend who got married at Samphire and strongly advised against it. I feel extremely sad that this beautiful island paradise of ours is now home to such unsavoury people. Their poor customer service will impact other businesses on the island and sadly leave tourist with a bad experience. I highly recommend Rottnest Island for a holiday but do not give your time, energy or money to Samphire.

We requested a balcony room looking over the pool area which we received. It was a lovely spot and I recognised that a lot of thought had been put into the design and style of the room for the benefit of the guest. Air-conditioning was very useful for the two very hot days we stayed and I felt that the windows to the balcony were double glazed which was helpful in keeping the heat and swimming pool noise out. One gripe was that some of the guests would go down to the swimming pool area during the morning and place towels on the cabana lounges as a sign that they were reserved for later on. So when people were looking at swimming and leaving their items somewhere later on, there was only the surrounding paved area available. Sometimes people would just leave towels lying around after a swim and not bother to put the used ones in a basket available on the way out of the pool area which made it difficult to distinguish between lounges which were being used or reserved for later. So by the end of the day there were blue and white striped pool towels strewn all over the pool area. Another gripe was that guests would order drinks from the bar to the pool area and a staff member would deliver the drinks to their Cabana or lounge by the pool but not take the used glasses away afterwards so only at the end of the day would things be cleaned up. Something easy to fix.

Our third stay at Samphire, some improvements to the aesthetics. Still very hit and miss service wise. Over an afternoon we approached staff 4 times advising that our outdoor furniture cushions were not in place and we were unable to use the balcony overlooking the beach. After 4 hours, half the cushions appeared with no explanation as to why others remained missing. On being given a bottle of Prosecco, we asked the attendant for a bucket of ice - he did not return. The background music playing from dawn to past dusk from the front area sounds like bad elevator music, with an appalling base beat that continues unrelenting.
