Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We first stayed at The Samphire in August 2021 and were impressed. Two months later in October 2021, it was a different story with our stay marred by construction noise, inexperienced staff and a lack of customer service from on-site management. After a two year break, we decided to give The Samphire another go. What a great decision! The experience this time (Nov 2023) matched our first stay. We experienced great customer service from all the staff we encountered - everyone from the staff on reception/check-in, the staff in the Bayside Bar and the staff in Lontara Restaurant. Our room and the veranda were clean and comfortable - and quiet! The bathroom product dispensers were well stocked, as were the pods for the coffee machine. Unfortunately the coffee machine was missing the milk whisk, but this was only a minor inconvenience and was quickly replaced when we advised Reception. The menu offerings for both dinner and breakfast at the Lontara restaurant were varied and ultimately delicious. We understand The Samphire has a different management team from our stay two years ago - and it shows. We would definitely recommend a stay here now and thoroughly enjoyed our mid-week break here.

It has been over a month since our stay and I’ve put off writing this review as Samphire was the most disappointing aspect of our Perth/Rottnest trip - the $$s spent on the room is really only a minor part of it. We had a ‘Beachfront Super King Suite with bath’. It was ‘nice’. That’s about as flowery as my description is going to get! I cannot recall any other hotel where we have been as underwhelmed with a room for that same price. I note Samphire’s own description of their accommodation is that it has been ‘ thoughtfully designed to complement its raw, natural surroundings to deliver an experience that is respectful, understated and relaxed’…..how about adding ‘bland, soulless, uninspiring and lacking any flourishes whatsoever’l!? And don’t expect your toiletries next to the bathtub to be replenished…. you’ll need to go and pump out soap into a glass from the bottles affixed to the wall in the shower. The same ‘bland/uninspiring’ description could be applied to the staff in the breakfast room. On both mornings we found our servers completely zapped of any enthusiasm and polish. One female couldn’t be described as anything other than plain rude. Both mornings we didn’t even get an explanation of ‘how breakfast works’ (inclusions/exclusions, coffees, buffet location etc etc) and we had to draw out the information from them. That aside, the breakfast itself is great (of course the quokka visitors are divine!!) and the nasi goreng had great chilli – perhaps they should feed some of that dish to the staff to give them a bit of vibrance!! Most of the seat coverings in the breakfast room are pretty grotty; not a good look. On a similar vein, the grotty mess around the pool area caused by the birds digging rubbish out of the bins and spreading it around is what you would expect in a public playground, not at a luxury resort. And no, we do not have some phobia of birds! But if there is a known bird issue then how hard would it be to send a grounds person around every hour or so just to make sure bins are not getting so full that the birds can play their games. Or how about invested in some better weighted lids?? The main irritation for the 6 of us staying at Samphire was the inconvenience that our baggage debacle caused. Although we did not ask the question of either the ferry or the hotel ‘when PRECISELY should we expect our luggage?’, it was implied that it would be in our room when we came back to check-in after a day exploring. It completely defies logic that our ferry could arrive at 10:30am, we check-in at 3pm, at a hotel that is a mere 600m down the road from the ferry arrival point, and we get into our rooms to find the luggage is still ‘on its way’ for all of us….AND would then still be a couple of hours before it would show up, by which time our late afternoon plans had fallen apart from having to sit around waiting for our clothing. In the end, after phone call after phone call, we had to go and hunt down a porter somewhere in the grounds and extract our bags off his trolley. Regardless of them trying to point blame at a third-party operator, the hotel failed by not escalating our requests for immediate delivery to the room, as they promised they would, once the issue was known. That porter was clearly just routinely and very unhurriedly going around, methodically dropping off bags to people in no particular organised order. We got the distinct impression this seemed to be a daily occurrence! OUR BIGGEST TIP: Get off the ferry, collect your own luggage on the jetty and wheel it 600m down the road to the hotel so a delivery drama does not unfold for you!

Possibly the best place in Australia to go. Do it. We stayed at the Samphire and also would have stayed in any of the other local venues. We came for the Quokkas, the holiday and the “nothing” that is leaving Sydney. A fantastic venue with perfect facilities and great food/wine/people. What else is there not to like. There is fun, sand, animals, people and if you want peace you have as much as you need… It always is what you make of it in any place. If you wrote a low star review.. it reflects your needs not the venue.

This is a 3 star hotel on Rottnest island which charges 5 star prices. We haven’t been to Rottnest for 20 years because of the over inflated prices and sub standard accommodation and facilities. We paid over $500 for one night at samphire and in all honesty it just isn’t worth the money. Wouldn’t bother coming back here again.

Lovely reception staff and greeting upon arrival. Our room was upstairs and had a view of the pool with glimpse of ocean. Beautiful spacious room, very clean, large balcony. Loved the bathroom layout but only disappointment were the glass doors and walls which were all opaque except for the side of the shower overlooking the room which was clear glass. This section had a curtain which was not block out and didn't cover the main corner to the room. I prefer to take my shower in private so this made my stay quite uncomfortable. Also the glass wasn't sound proof enough when on the toilet and left nothing to the imagination. Might be suitable for long time partners but not new couples. Pool area was great and loved that the pool was heated as weather was on the cool side during our stay.

I’m not a fan of roughing it. Samphire was utterly divine for our Rottnest stay. The beds and bedding were super comfy. The Samphire Club for an afternoon snack or for an hour whilst waiting for the ferry were brilliant! The heated pool was also a hit. Wouldn’t stay anywhere else.

An excellent stay. Very friendly and professional staff at all levels. The room was very comfortable and we wanted for nothing. Our 3 night stay was slightly impacted by a once a year wind + rain event but the hotel management went out of their way to make our inside days still a very pleasant experience. Our front sea view room stay package included continental breakfasts each morning; which was very extensive and looked forward to each day. Access to the Samphire Club for some free afternoon tasting events put the icing on an already 10/10 stay. Management should be commended for their inhouse training and having so many happy staff.

Arrival was well managed and the resort rooms were gorgeous. Bathroom was brilliant and the bed was very comfortable and inviting after a day travelling over a very rough sea. Such a delight. The pool was very inviting and the front area had a fire pit that was lit for us on the first night. Definitely recommend staying in this beautiful property
