From when you are first greeted at our foyer in the old loading gantry you'll get a sense that you’re staying somewhere special. We’re a place where an 1890’s flour mill, aerated waters and cordial factory, winery and a power station come to life in a thoroughly modern boutique hotel. Our thoughtfully curated design weaves the old with the new, telling the story of the Mill and its former life.

Lots has been written about the imaginative and stunning creation of a hotel in the skeleton of an old mill so I don't need to go there. The staff are friendly, the location is perfect for a break when driving from Albany to Perth, and we had really good meals in the cafe. The bed linen was to die for. But - and this is a very personal reaction - I did not feel comfortable in our room or the mill because of the darkness. The mill machinery is dark brown with lots of brown wood and many of the walls and doors are painted dark brown. The bathroom is dark brown and our room had only a small south-facing window so any light was swallowed up by the dark walls. The lighting is very subdued and I never felt happy in the room. Because there is no space to put cases or hang clothes we had cases open on the floor which made a small room seem even smaller. I did not like having to go to a common pantry to make coffee and missed having a microwave because for the only day in our 12 day road trip, we couldn't make our own oats for breakfast. It seems to me that there is a conflict between the desire for minimalist architecture throughout the building and the comfort of guests for whom basic ammenities such as a place to keep clothes and a kettle are not provided. Some people love this place so we all react differently.

Quite a unique venue in country WA. The old mill has bene done up in a very professional manner providing an outstanding venue in a small country town. The rooms aren't overly large but quite comfortable. The furnishings are modern and comfortable. Very quiet and great sleep.

This boutique hotel compares favourably with hotels in larger cities. Each room is spacious and contains historic relics from its previous use as a flour mill. The fridge is an oddity but serves its function for keeping wine and other drinks cool. The black box of guides and maps was very useful. The Cordial bar is charming with great service and tasty finger good. The spiced nuts were yummy. The Dome restaurant though was a big disappointment. The pizza was bland and ruined by too much sugary bbq sauce. The scotch filet tasted as though it had been steamed rather than grilled. The jus needed seasoning. Breakfast was much better with tasty bacon and eggs and high quality jam for the toast.

After we had checked in we were given a comprehensive description of the renovations, the original function of parts of the hotel & the key historic original feature of our room. Ours had a gantry with a pulley. The room was large, the bathroom was modern, we only stayed a night so the lack of a wardrobe was not an issue but for an extended stay it might be inconvenient. I particularly liked the black box with booklets about the hotel, the town & the wineries, obviously the owners & staff of the hotel were keen to promote the area. The bar downstairs was great only had beer but it was a lovely space to relax in. We ate dinner in Dome, the food was just basic ‘pub food’ so a bit uninspiring but the staff were extremely helpful & friendly. As an aside we were impressed with the town, everybody we talked to was obviously proud of the facilities & promoted local events, plus without exception everyone we spoke was exceptionally friendly.

Large, spacious and clean rooms. Many of the original features of the mill preserved or restored then blended nicely with quality modern features. The modern touches look nice but are not very practical for a hotel stay, for example three hangers on the wall is not really sufficient to hang your clothes up or the wine chiller is not really a fridge and there is no room safe for your valuables. The rooms are very spacious and have a good quality flat screen tv and a Bose sound system. The air conditioning works really well. The beds are large and comfortable with quality linens and nice big fluffy pillows. The room has a surprising number of power points – which is very convenient. There is no tea/coffee facilities or iron/ironing board in the room, however everyone has access to the “Guest Valet” a communal area where you can prepare a cup of tea/coffee, grab a book to read or get a spare towels or pillow, but not a good experience when you wake up and need a tea or coffee first thing in the morning and you go to the guest valet to find there are no clean cups to make a cup of coffee. Luxurious shower with a choice of standard shower head or rain shower head, both with very good water pressure and beautiful quality Aesop toiletries. Decent hair drier and good lighting to put make-up on. There is no secure parking at this hotel. You need to park your vehicle across the street in an open public carpark. This carpark is not secure and the hotel does not take any responsibility if your car gets stolen, damaged or broken into. The hotel is on the pricey side, and normally if you pay that much for a room you would also expect breakfast to be provided, or a pool and/or gym, however you are payment for the uniqueness of staying at a resorted flour mill, which was beautifully done. The reception when you come into the hotel is unmanned and you need to use the phone to contact someone which isn’t very welcoming, but when you get someone to assist you, the service was impeccable.
