With plenty of tracks on the property, it is well suited to the 4WD enthusiast. We stayed for four nights at the Homestead campground located on the Murchison River. It is located a few km out of town on the road to Kalbarri NP, so well located for visiting the area.

They were fairly particular about check-in times: had to wait for the clock to tick over: this is advised beforehand though so plan your arrival al time. Campsites along the riverbank were reasonably generous in size but neighbours were all close by: not bush camping. Each site came with a fire pit which was taken advantage of.

Amenities were a modest walk from the campsites: a bit ordinary really and could do with an upgrade. Probably a bit of a queue if the place were busy like over school holidays.

We loved the quiet serenity of the place. Booked early, no dramas, above the river, fire.
Showers barely adequate but if you want 5 star don't go camping!
Definitely need to book ahead. You can camp anywhere on the station if you have 4x4 or camp near Homestead with hard road access. No power, water.

This is a bit of a mixed review. I have given the place an average score, because I and a few off my friends thought this place was really good, while others in our group, my wife included, were not as happy.

We drove up to Kalbarri from the South and passed through the town and then up the road for about 10 minutes to the dirt road turn-off down to the station. Kalbarri is a pretty little place with some very nice looking holiday accommodation along the main street looking out over the bay area. Some of our group looked longingly at these options as we drove past, as it turned out.

We were an adult party of 9 and having been on holidays together before, we had elected to have 7 of our party share the cottage, which sleeps 8, with another couple in the shearers quarters.

Firstly, the shearers quarters, looked exactly like they sounded, very basic with a double bed and a pair of double bunks. For people staying there, there was a shared kitchen and a shared toilet/shower block up the back, next to the (fairly noisy) generator.

Because we were all friends, they came and shared out kitchen facilities in the cottage, while some of us shared the communal toilets and showers to lessen the impact in the cottage. Which brings me to the sleeping arrangements in the cottage. Bedroom 1 opens directly into the kitchen area. Passing through the open plan kitchen to the dining area, one can turn left into a sitting room, with a couple of old couches, but no working electric lights, although there was a TV, but we didn't try it.

Off to the right of the dining area is a door through to a passage. On the left of that was the toilet, behind a door and then the shower/basin area, which was open to the passage and then into a bedroom, through a second door, which had twin double bunks. Through that room was another room with another double bed.

Sounds a bit complicated, but what I ask trying to say is that if you didn't want to walk in on people and get them/you embarrassed, you had to take a bit of care and negotiate access in and out of bedrooms and shower areas. It worked pretty much OK for our group for the 3 nights we stayed there, but could be a problem for less mature people.

I had one cold shower, so stayed dirty for the rest of our stay, but I'm told the water was back on and hot by day three.

The fridge was modern and large and worked well enough to freeze water bottles, something that you don't always get. I couldn't get a signal on my phone (Optus), but I'm told some people on Telstra did have a signal.

The gas stove is quite old and has broken knobs and was a real pain to light up for toast - no toaster. The BBQ out back was disgusting, so we used the communal one near the camp-fire area, which was just OK. Plenty of free firewood, as well as biting insects, even in winter.

The station is located on the banks of the Murchison river and the area for campers looked lovely and we did a couple of small walks across the causeway and along the sandy banks of the river. Plenty of fish jumping, animal tracks, nice trees and native bushland. There is a 4WD track into the bush areas to explore up to the edge of the National Park, which was another 15 minutes up the road.

There are farm animals and some exotic ones in pens nearby as well as old army vehicles scattered around the place.

Near enough to get back into town for meals and supplies, but you probably wouldn't want to do it too often or forget the milk. For a different experience and a taste of station life, it was ideal. Great scenery all around and well located both for the amazing rocky coastal areas and also the gorges of the Kalbarri NP. The area is well worth spending at least 2 full days to see what is there and longer if you wanted to chill out and take in the sights in a more leisurely fashion.

Avoid if possible, very average amenities located a good distance from the camping area. Camp sites are not level making positioning Caravans/camper trailers a challenge. Ashes from fires scattered every where too. The owners need to start putting money taken from tourists back into facilities and make it half decent to camp on this property. We will not return and will pass on our experience to others.
One positive staff were friendly!

We camped in the Homestead camping area, right next to the river, great spot. The showers and toilets were a few minutes walk, depending on your site, but were clean with good hot water. We just used the camp kitchen for washing up, it was inside and very well equipped, with a large sitting/dining room adjacent. We had four nights there, a good amount of time to explore the area.

Loved staying here, beautiful spot to relax and enjoy nature. Friendly staff. Sites are a good size, quite sandy, with your own fire pit (but must bring own firewood or buy a $25 bag of logs). Amenities are quite a walk, flushing toilets and hot showers but quite basic. So peaceful and some lovely bird life. We wished we’d stayed longer. Only a short drive into Kalbarri township and NP. The 3km road in to the station is quite corrugated. Will definitely come back.

On the positive side it was a lovely camp site on the river which happened to be flowing while we were there. It’s a good location for exploring Kalbarri. On the negative, the amenities are very poor - quite filthy and a long, long walk from camp. I’m sure the slimey old shower curtain is due for a change…expensive for what it is - no water no power no laundry but charge s/as those who do provide these.

Terrible spot. Station camping was very cramped and on top of one another. Our site was squeezed in between a shed and a road on soggy mud ground. Definitely not isolated and tranquil as they explained over the phone. Misleading information. This camp site was more cramped than a caravan park. They obviously trying to cram as many campers into a small area to make the most money. Definitely do not camp there.

We arrived with 2 vans, to be told park anywhere, even though you have to book, can't book where you want to camp, not many spaces and couldn't park near each other. Everyone else had parked parallel to the river but we couldn't so had to reverse in, our friends van is not off-road and couldn't get it level, so had to move to other side of road.
$30 per night 2 toilets 2 showers per gender which are rough as guts, 400 mts from van, no dump point but you must be self sufficient? The road in was great but the road inside the property was not. $50 to go 4WDing and a $20 deposit for mud map very expensive seeing we were staying there.
This place could be the best place out but needs lots of work.

From the phone call to book to arrival so helpful. Where we camped was perfect. The availability to have a fire. The nocturnal visitors, the bird life, fishing, tracks to wander along. Dog friendly also a bonus. Thank you for letting us enjoy your paradise
