Seven of us stayed at Villa du Lac for a bookclub weekend. Obviously, our individual opinions of the B&B were varied but, overall, we enjoyed our stay. The rooms are old fashioned and could do with a little more dusting and sprucing up but they were comfortable and quaint. The bathrooms were clean and the villa was central for our needs. During our stay we went to the Kalamunda markets (which were excellent) and varied cafes/restaurants. We were disappointed that there wasn't a central lounge or dining area at the villa for our group and it was odd to gather in the 'honeymoon suite' to chat and eat our breakfast. Gael (owner/hostess) is lovely and will help where she can but apparently the house isn't registered for kitchen and lounge use. The maintenance for this building and its garden surroundings would be challenging and it probably isn't the same as it was when the villa first opened. On saying that, the price of $50 per person, was reasonable for a B&B. Based on the company we had (good friends and many laughs), it was always going to be a great weekend...quirky but memorable.

Dear Kerry, thank you for your lovely comments. Yes, the Kalamunda markets are definitely worth a visit; I have many guests who come to the hills to specifically visit the markets and art and craft exhibitions. Because shire regulations prevent guests using the kitchen, from now on I offer a pizza for each ten-person booking. Gael.

I stayed here during a very short trip to Perth - the bed was very comfortable, the shower great and at $50 a room well worth the money - Gael (the hostess) is friendly - she picked me up in town and ensured a cab when needed

A few of us stayed here for a night as we needed somewhere cheap to stay. $50 each is very reasonable as far as I'm concerned. The house may not be a flash mansion, but it is clean, tidy and comfortable. It's one of those houses that reminds us of our Grand mothers. I thought the rooms were clean, the beds were comfy and the rooms had everything we needed. Crumpets, cereal, juise, tea/coffee, jam, butter was supplied for breakfast. That's all you need. Gael, the lady that runs it is a very caring and friendly woman. If you want somewhere cheap to stay for a night or two, then this place is it. At the end of the day, we only get what we pay for, so I think that $50 per person is worth it.

Dear Donna, thank you for your lovely feedback. My house is a copy of a NSW early settler homestead. I try to keep the furniture in keeping with the early era. I am most fortunate that my period home has a huge park-like setting and is only a ten minute walk from historic Kalamunda. Gael.

If I could have given this a lower rating I would have. Grubby. Questionable linen. Fridge in wardrobe. Bathroom door tied open. Unguarded flue from floor below resting against bed and bedding. It's cheap, but I think you can at least expect clean and safe.

We had a large group of friends and family arriving from overseas and needed to know they could stay somewhere quiet, affordable, safe, and friendly. They loved their stay at Villa du Lac and I understand they are still in contact with the lady who runs it. They plan on coming again from Europe this year and staying at Villa du Lac again.

Dear Sam, thank you for your lovely words. I love having overseas' guests; it gives me a chance to practice my German, Danish, and Italian language skills. I enjoy hearing guests' life stories about their countries. Your parents have booked in again, thank you. Gael.

Villa du Lac is located at the edge of the Whistlepipe Gully, a national park, and being a keen bushwalker, I loved the place. The house backs on to a forested hill and the whole ambient is perfect if you are coming to walk the Bibbulmun track. I ended up staying two nights although had planned just one after Gael, the elderly but friendly hostess, told me about the Gully and the view of the city. So all up, good value, personable, and I am happy I stayed here.

My car broke down in Kalamunda and I called 2 B&Bs but no answer. Gael from Villa de Lac was my final call and she kindly offered to collect me. She had just had major surgery but was so delightful and helpful. I was immediately upgraded to the gorgeous honeymoon suite and spent two delightful days at Villa du Lac. The room was spacious with TV, ensuite, fridge and breakfast provided. Bed was very comfortable. There is a large porch with comfy leather chairs to relax in. The only downside was lack of wifi but the host drove me to the library so I could use their computers. Very well priced for the area at $50 per night. I will go back again for sure!
