Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We really liked our room (Executive style - one single bed and one much bigger). It was spacious, had a table and chairs, a fridge, and a kettle. We are a bit picky and like to use our fridge for our things, given there is a supermarket only a block away. As it was, it was fairly full of things for us to buy. We would have liked some plates, cutlery, and a toaster as well. It can get a bit expensive going out to dine a lot. We also found the shower very slippery and did not realise until we were leaving that there was a mat rolled up and put in a drawer that was there to address this issue. Anyway, we stay here every year and will continue to return.

We were very lucky to get into this motel on the Anzac Day weekend because there had been a late cancellation. Our luxury suite (No 18) is at the end of the old Methodist schoolhouse building and features a huge roof space, king bed, spa bath, a kitchenette and sitting room. Slightly off putting are the marble plaques which commemorate deaths from 1906 including one which alludes to a former headmaster "suddenly called to his eternal home". However, with the heater on the room proved to be quiet and comfortable. The bedcovers were edged with lace but kept us warm .

The motel was clean and tidy and allowed for a nice trip in a country town. The owner was very helpful in identifying some local eats that I should visit. I'll definitely be coming back to such a lovely town and motel.

I recently stayed at the Castlemaine Colonial Motel in one of the luxury suites for 4 nights. Lovely room and conditions. However, at booking I was offered a concessional rate of $150 per night. Regrettably, in hindsight, I did not get this offer confirmed in writing.
At checkout I was charged $195 per night. When I asked for a detailed bill, one was produced with the day rates suppressed and showing only the total. The attendant at the desk refused to recognise the rate of $150 and talked only about the rates normally charged.
If you choose to stay here, I would recommend booking and rates be confirmed in writing.
One-star rating.

5 couples booked to stay overnight to attend a group function on the 6th May. On arrival 2 of the couples were told their rooms were unavailable despite bookings having been made more than 4 weeks in advance Many and varied excuses were offered, none believable. One couple were offered relocation in a nearby alternative, and discussing their situation realised this was not a uncommon occurrence; and in fact this second provider was often called on to help out with clean linen and other assistance. The second couple were simply told they needed to go somewhere else. Despite being assure this was 5 star accommodation we found it to be well below that standard. The "manager's" claim that he was under staffed ( he appeared to be on his own at all times we met) fell on deaf ears as this should be easily rectified by a property of this purported acclaim.
An excellent night was had when we eventually gathered. Not at this Motel and no thanks to them. NEVER AGAIN!!

Stayed here with my partner recently and found that some of the complaints over the last two years haven't been fixed. Arrived and upon check in were told that we had been put into a twin room instead of the Executive triple room we had booked. My partner said "no, we booked an Executive triple room and paid for it too", despite booking the room through booking.com and it said pay at hotel. They had already taken the money out before we even arrived. The owner or manager said ok i'll move you to triple room. That's what we booked is a triple room not a double.
In Room 9, Had a shower on the Friday night and had just turned the taps on, the pipe to the shower head came off the outlet out of the wall due to the water pressure. managed to somehow screw the pipe/tube back into its socket before almost being scolded due to the water temperatures mind of its own. Spent most of the time in the shower trying to regulate the water. About 30 minutes after that, the manager or owner asked my partner how the room was and my partner told him about the shower problems. he came into the room to check the shower and said 'I get plumber out.' as the manager or owner was leaving. The travel information was over 2 years old, the remote barely worked but couldn't turn the tv on or off so had to do that manually. False advertising of this motel on Booking.com as it states satellite channels, alarm clock, cable channels, minibar, tea/coffee maker in room. None were available in the room at all. They advertise on the a frame board that there is In room breakfast yet no menus were available in the room. The fridge kept making weird clicking noises off and on through our stay. There was one tiny bar of soap for 2 people for 2 day stay. Not worth the money spent although is walking distance to the town centre but still not worth it. Wouldn't recommend or come back.

Booked a room for 2 nights. Rm14. Toilet cistern refilled every 4-5minutes throughout the night. In the morning I asked to be moved to another room.Manager wouldn't fix and denied there was a problem. Accused me of lying.

Room is 2 star not 4 star.
Old tired bedding and carpet. Bathroom dated.
No spare blanket, July.
Remote controls not working properly for RC AC or TV.
Not all lights work

No Austar (owner blamed Covid for this) or in room meals as listed on website, sound on the tv was poor and crackly, did not pick up many stations. No clock in room. Literature about things to do and places to eat was at minimum 4 years old. Hot water went cold after about 2 minutes. Tea, coffee and milk not replenished for our second night, we had to reuse our dirty coffee cups and wine glasses as they weren't replaced. The bathroom had been renovated, but very cheaply, not as nice as it looks in the photos. Window in the bathroom looked like it hasn't been cleaned for a while, huge spider web on it.
On the bright side, Castlemaine is a beautiful place. WiFi was great, large room, air con worked well, parking right outside the room.
Glad I visited Castlemaine but disappointed I stayed at Castlemaine Colonial Motel.

I booked directly with the business and then had to cancel the booking 18 minutes later.

I was not advised that the cancellation policy involved forfeiting a full nights accomodation charge once the booking was confirmed. I was only advised of this in the confirmation email, which effecively meant I had already forfeited the fee.

I paid $175 to hold a room for a couple of hours.

The owner refused to answer my emails and when I rang to discuss the matter he was rude and dismissive.

I will not be staying at this motel at any time in the future.

I booked a room at the Colonial Motel in Castlemaine in November 2022, for a Saturday night in March 2023 to attend a show at the Theatre Royal. We arrived in the afternoon to be told that they could not find our booking. I pulled out the email confirmation and gave the booking number. After some time I was told that my booking was held against the conference room, despite the email clearly stating that it was for an Executive Queen Room. I was then told that all rooms were booked and there was no availability because they had a film crew staying with them. There was an attempt to blame a third party booking company for the 'mix up' but I had booked directly with the motel and my email confirmation was from the manager. The only alternative suggested was that we might like to try for somewhere in Bendigo.

We had no option but to drive back to Melbourne that night at 11.30pm. I emailed the manager to express my dissatisfaction with this experience, as he was not in attendance in the Saturday afternoon. I did not even receive an acknowledgement of my email.

Book this motel at your own risk, I won't be attempting to stay there again.
