Visited in 11/21 on a 7 day stay combined with a liveaboard organised through the in house Pharaoh Dive Club. All arrangements prior to departure were dealt with efficiently & with great flexibility. Pick up from Hugharda airport was smooth, being met by a well turned out taxi for the ~90 minutes drive to Roots. Arrived early evening to a smooth checkin & was in my air conditioned room in minutes. Got to meet fellow divers over buffet dinner sat outside at a communal table. The food served, while not gourmet, is very tasty & plentiful to replace all those calories burnt during the day. Diving is a flexible affair, leaving number of dives per day & timing up to you. Only buddy diving allowed & log in/out system enforced on the north & south house reefs. Pharaoh Dive Club which is owned by Roots have a friendly & efficient staff who can solve any small equipment problems or cater for individual diving needs. My experience was excellent with them helping to fix major kit issues with some excellent rental gear. The diving days were spent at their beach location which has a dive centre & restaurant for lunch & soft drinks. It is 5-10 minutes walk from Roots although there is transport available which is normally used to move equipment to the beach every day. The two house reefs, north & south, are brimming with all sorts of sea life with no real need to go below 20 metres, although it is possible to go much deeper with some divers going to 50 metres for more technical stuff. Visibility was always in +50M range. As a budding, but ageing, underwater photographer, I managed over 1000 photos during my stay, covering a wide range of fish & coral types. I could go on & on about how great the place is, but will close now with massive thanks to Steve Rattle & his Roots/Pharaoh crews for a fabulous time & looking forward to returning next year

I’ve visited Roots around 5 times now. When I was 16 I visited Roots on my own and joined their conservation programme for a month. All the staff looked after me well but also gave me the freedom to take a leadership role within the team and develop as both a diver and person. At Roots Camp I’ve completed their Cavern diver course, deep diving course, and rescue diving course. All of which were fun, challenging and incredibly well ran. I’ve since visited a number of times with both family and friends, including a university dive trip. Whenever I have the itch to dive away from home, Roots is always top of my list to revisit :)

I dont normally write reviews but for Roots I must. It was our second visit after a long break because of covid. In one word, it was great, probably even better than the first visit. Roots is not for everyone but it's a great place for laid back divers who want get away from it all. It's unique in it's own way. Spend more than a week at Roots and you get used to the rhythm...dive, eat, beer, sleep, repeat until you wake up one day of the week to fly back home. The camp is quiet and the opposite of the typical touristy hotel in Hurghada. You get to actually chat and meet other guests and the staff and after a few days you feel like at home away from home. The STAFF are fantastic, attentive, nice, relaxed, most of them have been there for years. Food is plentiful and varied and BBQs are epic 'beach' or 'executive'(thanks again Steve!). Everyone is here for the diving....and its really, really good. We have dived many places and dive ops around the world and roots is right up there. Lots of really good shore diving north of the camp towards Safaga, most sites all for yourself. Special trips highly recommended to Elphinstone, Salem Express or other reefs on a day boat. You can combine these with house reef diving and have a nice variety of dives. If you want land based relaxed Red Sea diving Roots is your place. Try it and you will be back for more!

We stayed for 11 nights and opted for boutique room for 3 of us, A/C was a must for us during July-August as the heat outside is unforgiving. This place is kind of in a middle of desert so it might not be for everyone, but is a great retreat and we have enjoyed it very much. Hiking trails on top of those sun blasted and weathered hills that are literally falling apart is quite experience. The house reef is nice, full of life, shore dives at other nearby sites were also excellent. Our little fella managed to get his first dives logged, it was not planned, but was the best thing, house reef offers so much within the 4m depth so we could enjoy "60 minutes safety stop" together with little fella. Staff was very helpful from arranging airport pickup and drop-off, Luxor site seeing, local SIM card, to borrowing spare charging cable and SD card. It is really sad to see how badly the place is hit by travel restrictions and lack of tourism, would love to see the place under normal conditions and full of people. One aspect that certain governmental entity forbids night dives is despicable, I really wanna see that house reef at night especially the sandpatch between south and north side 10-20m.... Big thanks to Moudi, Mahmoud aka Tiny Moudi, captain, Maiken, Shazli, Ahmed, Sayed and all the other guys to make our stay really memorable one.
