We had planned a relaxing and special weekend break on an island that we looked pretty special and in a hotel that promised to be pretty special too.
We arrived early evening to be told that the restaurant and bar were closed as it was the end of season! The receptionist told us

The Pridwin on Shelter Island really could be one of my favorite places on earth. Myself and my family will continue to come back again and again. The rooms are spacious, and the food throughout our stay was fresh and delicious!

While the staff at the Pridwin was friendly, the hotel is poorly maintained.

The Pridwin boasts a lovely view of the bay, a dock with a some water equipment and friendly (but disorganized) staff. However, the hotel is very old, dirty and poorly run. The carpet is at least 20 y

We are sorry for your disappointment, though perhaps it’s to be expected with our Gryffindor allegiance? ; ) The Pridwin was built in the 1920s (well before motels!) and we do try to maintain the original intentions of the style and sensibility, while aspiring to modern standards of service. For the record, all the carpet in the hotel has been replaced in the last 6 years and we maintain a similar replacement schedule with room mattresses. You nailed our achilles heal this summer: we lost a porter and 2 beach attendants within weeks of opening and because of the nature of seasonal hires were not able to recoup those positions. We are very sorry for that. Because yes we do typically in season have young workers to help with luggage and the watercraft and beach service, yet this season our forces in these departments were diminished. Different strokes for different folks, some people come to the Pridwin breakfast just for our home made donuts. We are always making improvements and hope if you do have an urge to come out our way again that you’ll consider us again. We would be honored to make sure you get the right accommodation and service. Just ask for Jen when you make your reservation. (And yes, The Shining and Dirty Dancing are two of our favorite films!). Yours truly The Pridwin

Do the bedrooms have bath tubs or only showers? Looking to go August 1st for a few nights And how long to drive from JFK ? Thanks Ian
Some of the rooms have bathtubs but we are phasing them out so please call the hotel before you book and I can help you find a suitable room. It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes or more, depending on traffic, to get to The Pridwin Hotel from JFK.

can you drive all the way from jfk to hotel or do you need ferry. How long would it take?
You can drive from JFK to Shelter Island and The Pridwin Hotel but you do also have to take a car ferry. The drive to the North or South Ferry is approximately one and a half hours (95 miles), the North Ferry ride is about 15 minutes and the South Ferry ride is about 5 minutes. The hotel is then just a few miles from either ferry (5 to 10 minutes).
