Bakau, Gambia2 contributions
Spent a fabulous three days with Khady and her boys this weekend. Did a road trip from Gambia. Very close to border and easy to get to. Slightly harder to find once in Abene (beware there are two guest houses with baobab in name and no signage for the little baobab) finally asked for Chez Simon and got a motorcycle escort! Beautiful, tranquil place. Clean and tidy. Fantastic food home cooked by Khady. Super playmates and entertainment for my kids from Khady’s 2 boys. Abene itself was lovely and the beach sublime, would have been quite happy chilling at the little baobab though...

My best friend and I went on a spontaneous trip with a couple of new friends to have a memorable experience. When we got to Chez Simon we were in awww of the beauty. We met his wife, and children and the rest of his huge family. Unfortunately the day we got there, which was the last day of Ramadan, we found out that Simon had passed away the week before. It was the most emotional experience ever. We had a feast with the family, ate fresh delicious mangos, went clubbing in the jungle, the stars where absolutely beautiful and so intense. It was one of the wildest experience of my life and I’ll do it all over again if I had too.

My girlfriend and I stayed for 9 days. We had a great time and can honestly say that our stay there was unlike any holiday or travelling either of us have done! Where else would you get the personal touch that Simon provides?! As an introduction to Africa it was perfect. Simon can organise trips and he took us on a 2-day mangrove swamp hike as well as day trips including a memorable visit to a local village to witness an initiation ceremony. Finally, compliments to Khady for her cooking - each and every meal was delicious and she made more than enough to satisfy even my appetite! We will definitely return!

I visited Simon and Khady at their Little Boabab guesthouse and found it a beautiful place to stay at. It is a very well kept, eco friendly complex amidst beautiful gardens and the accommodation is comfortable and spotless. Simon is continuously working to find new ways of producing sustainable and renewable sources of energy to make it an eco friendly enterprise. He is also an accomplished writer and tour guide with his third book in the making. Anybody thinking of holidaying in west Africa would definitely benefit from reading his books prior to their visit. You will learn everything worth knowing about that part of Africa and more. On the catering front Khadys chips have a reputation of being the best ever tasted!

Totally recommend this. The compound is wonderful, the huts are great (and great value), Khady and Simon are wonderful hosts, Khady makes fantastic food, from local fresh ingredients. Plus they attract very interesting guests and visitors both local and foreign. The only problem can be managing to leave their place - but of course the village of Abene itself is also a marvellous and unique place.... This is the place to go for a holiday of a lifetime, in a real sub-Saharan African situation. I'm British and it was so nice to get away from the so-called developed world with all our hangups, alienation and frustration! Please go, you won't regret it! PS - it's also worth reading Simon's books, even if you don't go there. Great description of a European adjusting to life in Cassamance.
