This is very, very basic accomodations. Bedroom and communal kitchen cleanliness was questionable. Limited hot water for showers. There was an issue with their system confirming our reservation so we didn't get the private room we had booked. The staff was more accommodating and gave us a reduced rate and provided us a delicious dinner of curry with rice (veg...

Thanks for your honest review. Our accommodation is rustic - though all our rooms are very comfortable. Our backpackers was once an orphanage - many many years ago. And so our buildings are pretty old. Sometimes this can leave one with a feeling that it lacks cleanliness, but I assure you, we are a very clean place with lots of...

We stayed in the Crystal house, which was very nice, big and had a great view, however it was very cold during the night (also with 2 blankets) and the sound of the rain was horrible because of the metal plates on the roof. On Saturday night there was a party which was very noisy. We didn’t know this and...

So sorry for your disappointment. The Crystal House is beautiful. And the weather here is very rarely cold. Every now and again we get a cold snap but its rare. We do have many more blankets available through reception, and hot water bottles too. Its unfortunate about the rain - thats also something we don't get too much of. But...

I run DS Adventures and recently took a group up the Wild Coast on adventure motorcycles. We stayed over at Amapondo for two nights. What can one say to sum up our experience at Amapondo. One word comes to mind. Actually make that two. "AMAPONDO FEVER". It will grip you whether you want it to or not. The atmosphere is...

We returned to Amapondo for the first time under new(ish) ownership, after many previous visits. I am happy to say that Amapondo is still as great as ever a place to experience the magic of the Transkei, and all the fascinating characters of Port St Johns in particular.

Great to hear that we are holding up the fort. My wife Amanda and I took over three years ago, and have been working (and playing) hard (with the support of all our wonderful staff) to ensure that Amapondo upholds its legendary reputation, whilst also adding in our personal flare. What we have now is a backpackers that everyone should...

On my way home to JHB from Port Elizabeth we stopped at Amapondo. One of the most amazing places on the Wildcoast (Probably the world) . We stayed for 3 nights and i could've easily done 3 weeks. This super spot has it all, down to landscape, activities, vegetation and awesome fishing spots at the Umzimvubu river mouth. Many thanks...

We had a lovely stay in the Crystal House in Amapondo Backpackers. It was a sporty task to carry all our stuff up the 77 steps but we had a friendly helper from the staff. The hut is well equiped and even had a little stove to ease the winter chill. Most lovely views and a quiet escape from the...

We are so happy you enjoyed our beautiful Crystal House. Did you know it was built in the shape of Crystal, and right in the centre, under the floor boards, is a real crystal (supposedly centralising the energy). Glad that you had a great stay here with us at Amapondo and we would be delighted if you come back again.

South African couple showing our British friends around. What a perfect stop for two nights en route from the midlands to PE. A real taste of the charms of the wild coast - with it's beautiful open spaces, ocean and welcoming people. It poured with rain most of the time we were there but we squeezed in a walk to...

Wow, what an awesome review. It rained? What a pity. But some of those rainy days, overlooking the ocean, chatting and getting up to silly games at the bar, can be the most memorable. Our views really are spectacular. And our food and bar are the heart of Amapondo. We know our food is great, and well priced. Our staff...

Came here for a lunch. We had to wait quite long for the food and told them afterwards. The manager sincerely apologised and seemed to care extremely about the wellbeing of his guests. He offered us a free night and we spend the evening drinking and hanging out at the bar. The bar guy of the evening was extremely relaxed...

I distinctly remember you guys coming around and that you waited an unacceptable length of time for your food. I am deeply sorry for that. We had a new person training in the restaurant, and although that is not an excuse, it is a rare occurrence. However it all worked out in the end, you got a totally FREE night...

Yet another afternoon relaxing at Amapondo after a long drive and work. Splendid filter coffee and toasted sandwich for late lunch. Buzzing with lots of visitors no space to stay left. Indicative of a good place to stay! You have to visit here if coming to Port St John's. Lovely beaches and mountains close by.

Was expecting a backpackers, but found a Gem. Friendly staff and patrons, a welcoming place in a lovely environment. Port St Johns offers a wealth of activities to do in the area. Waterfalls to sea life and stunning vegetation. Worth a visit again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Amapondo is Ama-azing. Amapondo is nestled on a hill on the verge of a tropical rain forest and only 2 minutes walk from a beautiful beach. Head down to sunbathe or plunge in the clear warm waters of the deep rock pools nearby. The African-themed rooms and deluxe private self-catering cottages all have their own unique design and style. The quirkily designed cottages have incredible views, are really comfortable and come at a price that you'll find hard to match. Turtle Cove has one of the best views on the Wild Coast from its upstairs bubble bath, whilst Crystal House, with its glass frontage, offers classic panoramic ocean views. Whether you want a quiet, relaxing break in your own piece of paradise, a base from which you can explore the natural beauty of the area, an adventure on one of their many tours, close interactions with locals, genuine cultural experiences, yoga lessons, a deep tissue massage, or a thumping all-out party at their buzzy bar, you'll find it at Amapondo. ... more   less
