Late night arrival due to hassles at checkpoint outside of town. Restaurant prepared salad, meat & fries. Departure from Gao delayed due to illness of one of travel companions (plumbing worked) and debate/confusion among police & military regarding need for escort to Niger border. They did not provide and we did not need. Authorities were apparently nervous about us and...

we went everywhere in Gao, and this is the best place to stay. why ? the service. the guy here runs everywhere to make you happy. the problem is that there is very little money put into the hotel, it could be really charming, but there are so few travelers that go to Gao, there is no money to pay...

I was in Mali for a month a few years back and while I was in Gao I stayed at the hotel Tizimizi. Sometimes seen TiziMizi, it is relatively safe. There is a wall surrounding the freestanding rooms. There is an eating area, several showers throughout the grounds and it's close to the university if you want to pop in...
